The concept is dissonance, Singing in one key while another vocalist harmonizing another key, a sound dark and ominous, and very deep. Consonance, dissonance, and resolution, minus dissonance, limits the composers emotional spectrum by eliminating melancholic expression. Resolution is enhanced when following dissonance. Operas without this lose depth, for ex., in sinister scenes.
