Only law abiding citizens are affected by gun laws. Criminals bypass laws altogether, so the only guns that will be taken away are law abiding citizens guns. They will then be at the mercy of the criminal element. Although I do believe there should be mental screening for purchasing guns. He needs to psychologically reform the bad people who have access to guns and obviously restucture proceedures so they can't get their hands on one. (I know easy to say than do.)
