  • stupendo

  • restringing has to be a bitch...

  • Enar Magnusson have made the instrument. He is the best and has also the best price. Good combination!!!

  • It´s like the strange, and beautiful instruments that Les Luthiers have made , you can see them on you tube

  • Who made this instrument? I like it very much!

  • accordion meets viola and makes a hybrid baby call Nyckelharpa. :D

  • *sigh* can't believe people actually clicked the dislike button for this... Goodjob :)

  • Very good! Glad you uploaded this and the others! One of the hidden treasures of YouTube!

  • Its sound reminds me of the viola d'amore!

  • how many strings have this?

  • fascinating instrument!

  • amazing

  • This man deserves a Moustache

  • WOW! This is too cool! I love it!

  • Beautiful.

  • GENIALLLLLLLL!!!!

  • Restringing must be a bitch

  • Nice, lovely articulation, they tickle the ears !!! Thanks for sharing !!! ♥

  • "VIOLIN HERO"

  • Mmmhh..something like an hurdy-gurdy...love it!! :D

  • fun fact: "nyckel" means key in Swedish

  • It just resonates so beautifully!

  • Beautiful playing, and a real testament to the adaptability of Bach's music.

  • magnifique!!

  • booo!

  • Ooops - I think the guy meant "baroque" music, not "barock".

  • @celticbattleaxe

Yes, you're right. It should be "baroque music".

The guy who wrote the description is from Sweden, and in Swedish it's spelled "barock". We also use word-compounding a lot, which is the reason he wrote "barockmusic" and not "barock music".

  • @truefregn Well, we still got the point, and that's what matters. Still, I didn't notice it until recently!

I wondered about the languages combos - Germanic languages do that a lot. But, me, I only speak some Gaelige and Cymraeg (Irish and Welsh) as well as Italian. I'm way more fluent in Italian, mainly because I took it in high school for two years, and I caught-on very fast. I have no books on either Gaelige nor Cymraeg, so I learn from websites.

  • Wow. comepletely awesome. better than yo yo ma

  • Why didn't Bach compose this with the nyckelharpa in mind? It is perfect for it!

  • that thing must be a bitch to tune. How many strings does it have?

  • @anonymous1598 hi, the nyckelharpa has 16 strings, of which 4 are playable and the rest is resonator-strings! :)

  • @apfelstrudelmaster Don't you see him playing more strings?

  • @zzausel no, it maybe looks like that from far away:) there are four playable strings, the rest of the strings aren't accessible with the bow since they are about a half centimetre under the melodystrings :)

  • @apfelstrudelmaster 2.05 seemed to me a bass string. btw ya name cd be mine.

  • @zzausel oh yes, sorry, my mistake. the lowest string is a bass string, most commonly tuned to a C or D :)

  • COOL=) god fingers

  • Jo jag tackar jag!

  • thats it... enough internet for the year... i already saw greatness.

  • Soooo it's just basically a violin??

  • @wedontknowone1 More of a Guitiar-Violion.

  • that must be sooooooooo hard to tune.

  • Beautifully played! :-)

  • You know, I started playing violin since I was 5 - no lie. I never really liked it much though, though I could never get the sound I wanted to hear from it. I wish I started playing the Nychelharpa at age 5; it has THE perfect sound I was always after. :)

  • Bravo! Well-played. I actually think the mechanical sound adds musical and percussive interest... a different world than the cello or violin.

  • sunjaba, thata wulthag jah skaun ist!!!

  • Lost the rythm at 1:35. Too bad. Beatiful, anyway.

  • @poveron7 Well, it occurred throughout the piece as well - but I think it adds style to this :)

  • @celticbattleaxe Yeah, at 1:35 to 1:50 looks like he starts to play another music. A cool music, a joyful music, but not a Bach Prelude. Yeah, feels "stilysh", i kind like it too, but i still prefer the conventional bach way. xD But he really knows play the prelude on this instrument. =)

  • @poveron7 Oh - that is actually part of Bach's piece. He is just playing it at about an octave higher than the original key - the nyckelharpa cannot reach that low.

The problem with the conventional Bach way is that is was meant for cello (I personally find the nychelharpa is the better instrument :) ).

  • This is so cool!

  • Wahnsinn!

  • WOW! VERY pretty!

  • This would sound so unbelievebly beautiful if there were 3 more of these playing with him. One is also very nice. Good job.

  • Wow that was amazing.

  • bloody hell this is good! please post more

  • This work is wonderful.

    The player is wonderful.

    The nyckelharpa ist wonderful.

    A wonderful music !

I'm fascinated ! I can't good play nyckelharpa but I love that ! Tkank you :) I know now what we can make with a nyckelharpa. It's a dream !

  • THIS WAS AWESOME!! I'M VERY IMPRESSED! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS.

  • How much does it take to tune this instrument?

  • ah, written for cello, but sounds even better on the nykelharpa!!

  • @celticbattleaxe I kinda like it on bass and doublebass.

  • @lusteraliaszero Hmmm - never heard it on a bass! I'll check it out - thanks! :)

  • you are great at playing, love the nyckelharpa :D bach sounds very beautiful on mandolin too, i play some :D

  • well i can officially cross "listen to Bach cello suite no.1 on Nyckelharpa" off my bucket list.

  • jädrar vad lång stråke han har då!

  • Wow my friend, how much time do you spend to tune this beautiful instrument? :)

And which piece of Bach is this?

  • @psychgoth the piece is Bach's Cello Suite No. 1

  • Holy Bach!

He would be so proud! That's just awesome.

  • Dude! This is amazing. AMAZING. Love your Bach playing, and the instrument. Bravo:)

  • WOOOOOW

  • They are available at Lark in the Morning

  • that thing must be a bithch to tune but itz worth it

  • Es totalmente inspirador !!!

  • I thought to myself (after listening to some other nyckelharpa music) "Well, I wonder how Bachs Cello Prelude would sound on a nyckelharpa..." and here you are playing so wonderfully! Splendid!

  • Dude! It's like an auto-tuned violin!

  • @mu3mu3mu3 it's like an old guitar hero controller:D it's more controllable that normal violins, but you can'T play vibrato or else, right? Well, great sounding intrument! and very nice playing.

  • @zakkwyldeverehrer im not entirely sure but i think you can do vibrato through the amount of pressure you put on the key. that is, after pressing it down, you alternate between pressing hard and pressing soft

  • @mu3mu3mu3 haha, but in that context it is a manual operation.

  • @mu3mu3mu3 No, it isn't like an auto-tuned violin at all.

  • From today it's my new love.

*wondering where to buy or how much it cost...*

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing!

  • PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERFECT :')

  • how much does one of these cost????

  • @saguitar541 As he said, around 12000 Swedish kronor which is about 2000 US Dollars ;)

  • @Adavur holy crap. thats a lot of money

  • @saguitar541 yeah, guess it's handmade.

  • @saguitar541 Well, a good nyckelharpa costs as much as a good electric guitar - i guess it's fair :)

  • @artemortis yea but i dont have that kind of money. lol

  • phenetically do you pronounce that Nickle*harp*a?

  • @Pangjunmin I think you give the "ck" a bit of kick.

  • That is AWESOME!

  • Stunning. :)

  • I love the Nyckelharpa!!!

  • Magic!

  • This is the cello for the left-hand challenged. A cello with keys!

  • beautiful!!

  • Hi there wonderful nyckelharpa player.... I was wondering about your bow. I just started playing the nyckelharpa and the bow I am using is very different yours seems like a full size.

  • I'm not sure how I got to this video, but I like it.

  • Beste Grüße aus Deutschland.

    Wunderschönes Spiel!

  • nykleharpa hero

  • it's so loud for a string instrument! why did the violin ever win the battle with string instruments (and the whole Viol (sp?) class of string instruments)

  • Very nice!

  • @TheRegulated

I'm a punk rocker and I still like this...

  • @delcardobaybandgeek oh dats surprizing well good for you

  • @delcardobaybandgeek metalhead over here... i like it too :)

  • violin for guitarists... heh :)

  • 7 people are punk rockers

  • dude, this is so butiful..... (lol spelling?)

  • Viva Bach! That was beautiful. And what an intriguing instrument. Haunting sound. Definitely not the same old same old. So here's a violin video response 4 U. (Hope you like my own unconventional approach to this venerable melody.)

    Play on!

  • Notice the violin bow which is quite longer than those for the nyckelharpa.

  • Congratulations !

  • I love ba-rock-n-roll

  • Fantastic. That was A-MAZING!!!

  • WOW

  • hi, is it possible to obtain a black (color) nyckelharpa ? ? ?

where can i find a constuctor to make me a black one ?

  • beautiful, its a contraption, but, alas, awesome

  • what is the song called

  • @DaKoolKat Bach - Cello Suite No.1 i - Prelude

  • This is gorgeous!!!! Interesting instrument. Such a ring!!!

  • This sounds like an entire string section playing.

  • wonderful...

  • Thank you Lars. I live in australia and have been playing a Nyckelharpa sins I was 17. taught my self, no tradition in key fiddle where I came from, I love bach. made my own interpretations of Bach. but have always dreamed of learning even just one peace of his works. even if it had to be on a violin, but what you showed me is even better. thank you so much for your effort. I love it. I will set to work and learn it from your example on u-tube. tak so muke and kind regards

    Marcus

  • bravo! multi bueno bellisimo!

  • Absolut utmärkt. 5 stjärnor.

    Hälsningar från barockmusiälskare i Finland

  • Never thought that Bach could be played so virtuosoly on a nyckelharpa - simply great stuff from Torbjorn Lars. Thanks for your superb performance! :-))

  • haha swedish is so easy to understand...

    Vad kostar en nyckelharpa ungefär?

    Was kostet eine Schlüsselharfe ungefähr?

almost the same in German... :)

  • @nikolaisoerensen

try to get a Swedish one, from a maker with broad experience. Imho they are still reasonably priced. But those made in Germany, France, Italy or Spain are considerably more expensive. Don't asky me why.

  • @nikolaisoerensen

Why not try to get a NH from a Swedish maker with broad experience? Those made in Germany, France, Italy or Spain are occasionally much more expensive. Don't ask me why.

  • What to say...it's wonderful! Thank you!

  • Extremely impressive!!!!!!!

Just a question, on Nyckelharpa can you play vibratos like on violins?

    Thanks for the music!

  • Musikalisk upplevelse i de högre sfärerna :)

  • So beautiful.

  • Very Nice!!!!

  • holy shit how many strings are on that bad boy! sweet instrument

  • Cellosvit no. 1 i G-dur - Preludium! HAHAHA! :D :D :D

  • You are Amazing !!!! I love this song!!

  • how many strings are there?

  • Beautiful!!

Do the keys fall from their own weigth like in Viela?

  • that sound magical

  • hello torbjorn,

We are here all together at burg fursteneck with the nyckelharpa advanced class. we have watched and listened your video and we like it very much greetings Didier, Ron, Andrea, Christoph, Astrid, Rudolf, Katharina, Johannes, karin.

  • this instrument fascinates me.

  • funny insturment.

  • how it's possible to play on this :) you're amazing !

  • That thing must be a nightmare to tune.

  • @Procrastinatron3000 Actually, it is not harder than an ordinary fiddle.

You tune the playing strings as usually. Then you platy the resonance strings by playing right note and tune the corrensponding resonance string so it sounds at the same tone. Just play, the tone and look and listen to the other string.

The extra strings give a reverbe feeling to the tunes :)

Search for "Nyckelharpa" or "Swedish key harp" for more information. Or watch /watch?v=EK88Vf6pTIU :)

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video and helping to bring the knowledge of this very old and wonderful instrument back to the world. Due in part to you inspiring me, a very nice gentlemen in Sweden is currently constructing a nyckelharpa for me & I will soon be learning to play it. I cannot wait to experience what it must feel like to produce music with it. Your playing is absolutely lovely and gives me goosebumps each time I listen to it. Bravo!

  • Cirka 12 000 hos Enar Magnusson. Umeå. Han är bäst och billigast. Bra kombination.

  • Vad kostar en nyckelharpa ungefär? :3

Merci

  • Absolutely amazing! The bow looks a little short. I wonder if a viola bow would produce an even better sound than it already has.

Anyway, I'm blown away, both by the surprisingly beautiful sound of the instrument, and by the excellent performance.

  • It's definitely better than on the harpsichord. That instrument gets old fast.

  • Absolutely wonderful!

  • I totally agree!

  • what is this song called?

  • its bach's cello prelude

  • so interesting to see and hear unusual vintage instruments being played with such virtuosity!

  • Fabulous. Absolutely.

  • Fantastic!!! Where can I hear this instrument in Stockholm????

  • will probably be hard, its mostly played in the northen part of Sweden

  • That was surprisingly awesome.

  • It reminds me of the missing link between violin and hurdy-gurdy!!

  • @Metallicazack HELLZ YA! I dunno why I just wrote that.

  • Oh I love it!

  • BRAVO!! Très beau :-)

  • LOL! It's a tracker action violin!

  • Very interesting! I've never heard baroque/classical music performed on the nyckelharpa! Sounds great :)

  • Beautiful!!!

But what was the name of this piece of music?

  • @storytellervdwpiper

    cello suite 2 by bach

  • What the fuck.
