I wouldn't even compare the two. Donald is one of the greatest actors who ever lived, his son is likeable but his talent is nowhere near comparable. He has a quality about him that has a huge spark, even eeriness about him that is truly unique (day of the locust, don't look now, invasion of the body snatchers, to name but a few).

He adds weight to any film he appears in, and when he leaves the screen, I get sad.

What a cool dude, right to the core. He's an utterly brilliant actor to boot.

I don't think he's underrated. Anybody who watches him can sense what an amazing actor he is. It's no accident that he still gets great roles in todays movies, even though he's over 70 now. A remarkable man. Very bright. Very charming.
