  • Its FOX news what did you expect? They are a tool used to control!

  • Fox is dumb but I'm glad that you are getting the word out there. :) Don't worry about how many people are watching, focus on how many people you are helping because they are watching. <3 stay strong

  • That was a shitty "interview", mass media sucks!

  • Who are these "experts" that think Youtube is inspiring anyone to cut? Wonderful people like Idranktheseawater are not inspiring us to cut. Instead they are giving cutters the all important message "you are not alone".

  • Wow i never watched the news clip until now cause when you first posted it I wasn't yet safe enough in recovery. I'm glad self injury got awareness but, that's so hypocritical of them with the triggering content! I'm pissed at the way they used you and edited it so all it was was you describing how you hurt yourself. Guess that's fox news for ya....so sorry they did this to you though ):

  • I am new to your channel and I really feel for you and how much you are suffering. the gist that I got form the FOX news clip is they portray the youtube posts as teens bragging and showing off the self abuse. Of the vids of yours I have watched so far my impression is of a form of catharsis for you as well as a way to connect with others in need. The news is very irresponsible on a daily basis especially in the US. New is entertainment anymore.

  • Never accept an invitation from FUX news. FUX news is filled with imbeciles such as Michio Kaku and the NASA "officials" who come on to lie to the people. FUX news is not a disgrace and joke in Canada. FUX news is a joke in this entire universe. They are a channel for oblivious comedians.

  • wow that was jus. ugh i hate the way they put that.. ughh

  • Terribly done by fox.

  • I watched that video and my gosh was it triggering!! They should not have posted pictures like that! I dont come to your channel for pro self injury videos, I come to hear your story and for support.

  • WTF they said we watch your channel to see yyou cut yourself. but we watch to see your story and to get support.

  • @henerso and this would be a PERFECT example of people ignorence and lack of understanding. They won't ever understand no matter how much they try unless they've walked down the same road that we all have with SI. tch wooow like we'd really sit up there and watch a vid of someone SI wtf?! fcking ignorent pplz...

  • fox did it again they did the same thing about emos they twist the story to make it seem like it's really horrible i mean when that emo story came out my mom was watching me all the time to see if i'd kill myself & then not long after she saw my scars & nearly killed me b/c of it then after she saw the SI video fox news did she doesn't even talk to me & when she does it's about me cutting & all that junk i just wish she could trust me & fox news really isn't helping at all & DON'T QUIT YOUTUBE!

  • That's how news works! It wasn't made to help self-harmers. They're a minority, not a significant source of viewers or profits. It was made for the majority of viewers, who haven't a clue, to keep their attention for one day. Nothing makes better news than alarming adults about the trouble other people's teenage kids are getting into. Hopefully more people start realizing that a news corporation that does a sloppy job of one issue probably covers every issue the same way.

  • i hate that they said "pro cutting videos" and showing us" actually cutting on videos" when thats not true at all!!!

  • Wait... WHAT!!!! I hate that you can edit anything to make it look or seem like anything you want. I am so thankful that I knew who you were and what you are about BEFORE I saw this stupid clip on the Fox "news" site. This makes me so angry for you!

Keep doing what you're doing, because you've helped me so much w/ your videos! You'll never know how much I appreciate you and your courage. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

  • So I should have read your info, or watched the video all the way through, but I wanted to know what you were talking about, so I watched it. HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!! That is a seriously triggering video, I was shocked! I was outraged that they did that to you as well. Although in the text portion they did put, 'Unlike most self-harm videos on YouTube Melissa doesn't romanticize the problem. Nor does she post images of her many scars from years of self-injury.' But still few will read it. :(

  • I just watched that news thing WTF youtube helps me get over cutting by watching xsullengirlx and you and afew others it seems like they dont know what there talking about that video was very triggering thats just messed up.....btw i bought your book its great so far :D

  • Thank you for you.

  • WTTFFFFFFFF damn fcking news needs to effing get their damn facts straight and shit....DONT DELETE YOUR CHANNEL!!! ive been your silent fan and I dont know if you will read my comment but your videos helped me alot. thank you. this silent.fan has spoken for once to you :)

  • what they did was they used you as a tool that cause you talk about that you are a "bad" person. We all on youtube know you help out people. Fox doesn't.

  • I have yet to find one video on youtube that is even remotely "pro-self harm" every single one, even the graphic ones, emphasize that self harm is horribly damaging both physically and emotionally. And then the facts that they said teens are going on youtube with the intention of watching triggering videos?! I'd like them to site their sources please.

  • DONT YOU DARE DELETE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!! ILY!!

  • omg i cant believe the'yr saying people r cutting or self mutilating themselves because of the videos on YouTube. people r going to do it no matter what and i'm actually glad because then we can relate to each other and feel like we're not alone

  • OMG WHAT BITCHES!

  • I'm glad you say what you say. It helps me alot personally with understnding my SI, searching for reasons and triggers-I don't know if I'm have even thought of searching for triggers on my own. . .you're doing a great thing (^_^)

  • That was too triggering for television. :/

  • so many people defended you in the comments, it was good to see.

I'm sorry they twisted things around so much :(

  • Grrrr.... I was all excited to see you on Fox, then non-plussed when I saw the clip. Then, I watched it again and it made me mad that they portrayed you as one of the people who were posting their cuts!!! They just used you as a sound byte without even listening to what you had to say. What a shame and a disgrace. You have bared your soul here to help others and that's all they could do with it. They owe you an apology and a follow up. Chin up, they misquote EVERYONE! ~Jon G.

  • "With no more than six levels of misquotation, any statement can be made to say whatever you wish."

    ~ John McCarthy

  • I can't believe they asked to see your scars! Did you let them?

  • @millieeek

    No, I didnt show them

  • All of the SI bloggers I've seen are Anti- SI. Fox news is not doing their research. They think that just because it shows triggering images that it is pro-si. I've seen NO pro-si videos. Every single one ends in "that was my story. Don't let it become yours." or "help is out there." or something like it.

  • omfg if you delete your channel i will cry!...haha

  • Yeah that was kind of triggering. I watched long enough to hear most of it though and totally agree. They seem like they are attacking a 'trend' of exhibitionist cutting when obviously that isn't the root of the problem. Lousy sensationalist news never considers the social repercussions of their actions.

  • "a growing trend among teens" WTF???? and then they interview you... your obviously not a teen... neither am i. theres tons of people who do it and arnt teens! FUCK THEM!

  • @armaduh I hate how they call it a "trend." It's not a trend.

  • That was a really shitty job on the part of Fox News. They put down YouTube for having graphic images & then showed them. They didn't have much about the REAL reasons why people SI, what to do if you or someone you know SIs, or any real facts about SI. At that point, they probably should have just left the topic alone because they just made the situation worse. YouTube does have some rather graphic images, BUT there are several people, like you, who are trying to help out those who SI.

  • tomroow is si awness dayy !!

  • I think the media are being very irresponsible with how they are portraying self injury firstly as a 'trend' and also as something that only teenagers do. They only seem to be interested in sensationalism (what other reason to broadcast such graphic images that are not helpful in any way?) and putting fear into the minds of parents watching.

I was disappointed with how they used your video along with those pictures to make it seem as if you are part of the 'trend' glorifying SI.

  • wow, you can count on FOX news to screw up something as important as self injury awareness, fox is a biased and bigoted channel and they will impose their own opinions on their new casts, so of course the wouldn't tell people how to get help, they don't care about the people who need help :( I'm sorry that they used you like that

  • Yeah, that was disappointing. :(

Still cool that you were on tv though :P But they definitely should've used more recovery-based aspects of your interview and not just listing the different methods you had used. FOX FAIL.

  • :O Why is a channel that boasts about being 'fair and balanced' putting that kind of stuff onto their network?!

  • i wanted to watch this vid before commenting. after watching it i am disgusted with how they portrayed SI. they say it's a teen trend. bull shit! there are plenty of adults who have to suffer with this. i'm sure most people who watch SI vids are simply looking to see how each other is doing. i don't believe anyone here is glorifying SI. now granted i wasn't able to watch the whole clip, but i'm just going off what i saw. you were great though. as always. hope you're doing well :)

  • Your smile is amazing and your unbelievably pretty. Probably the most amazing person I have ever met . Xx

  • Even when I knew the pictures following you weren't of you it really did seem that way... That was insightful but more about the publicity than the importance of SI. Which is sad to me... But hey, you did your part, the editor sucked! Proud of you Melissa

  • That's fox news for you...

  • ALSO on a personal note on your behalf i was really angry with the fact that they showed no recognition of the fact that you, unlike so many on youtube, are agaisnt the movement of ';triggering' videos etc. The way it was cut made you seem a part of that, instead of displaying just how against all of that you are. This was what made me angriest, you are a wonderfull person M, and dont ever delete your account, because you are a great help to all your subscribers :) xoxox Take Care

  • Hi you, i was really angry with what they showed. I guess this a good representation of how the media manipulates peoples words and responses to question, to fit their own agenda. To put all those triggering images in the video, and to portray the horrors of self harm, just to get viewers and to use the shock effect just doesnt have a place in issues like self harm. Its fantastic that self harm is finally being addressed in the media, but to apply the same stereotypes etc is hugely unhelpfull.

  • wow. So I just watched the Fox news link you posted. That makes me SO MAD! That wasn't helpful at all!

Also the way they talked about SI like its a TREND?? Like people just do it cuz their friends do! I should probably just stop before I get too mad. O_O

  • that whole video was a lie *most of it* and its not a trend

  • *I found out it broke but my mom won't buy a new one cuz she is against it*

    No I don't have a nutritionist

Plus my mom is starting to notice that I'm not eating much. gosh :/

I can't live without my scale. I'm soooo nearvous right now. I'm afraid that since I don't have a scale anymore I'll eat even less then before. I really don't know how I'll survive.

  • My mom took my scale away. I'm so scared. What should I do??? It's downstairs but If I go get it she'll know. What to do?

  • @PeaceLoveMusicNoDuh

Oooh, that's a tough one. I would be freaking out too if my scale was taken away.

Do you have meetings with a nutritionist? Maybe they could help you to see what kinds of foods you will feel safe eating.

I wish I knew how to make the panic go away.

  • that was a terrible video, i have not found a pro cutting video, and i dont cut because of youtube, i watch these vids because i cut!

  • Woo hoo! World famous author in the news!

Uhm, well, Fox ... they do good entertainment ... uhm, but news?

So, yeah, not at all surprising that Fox goes for the most controversial and upsetting stuff in their "news". Fair and unbiased reporting? Fox? (cough, cough)

  • It was a pretty cheap exploitation story and, overall, bad journalism job in my opinion. It relied heavily on the shock value of the issue but didn't address very important points about it, like how it relates to health, both emotional and physically.

I was particularly annoyed that they referred to it as "a trend". I know it's not healthy, but if they regard it as a trend, then they treat it like something parents can advice against or disregard. It's not a cause, it's a consequence.

  • So a midget walks into a library and asks for if they have a book on Irony.

The librarian says "Sure, it is on the top shelf."

  • "The latest teen obsession"

"This trend is more popular than ever"

    WHAT THE HECK?

Its not the latest teen obsession, its been going on for a long time and not only teens do it and its NOT A TRENT, its the way alot of people cope with anxiety and stress. And as Melissa said, it was triggering instead of helping others, it was offensive to me a self cutter to label it as a trend, and the latest obsession. Its not fashion or makeup, its breaking your skin. That video was not very helpful. Oh well

  • okay. that was really triggering and that is coming from someone who doesn't get triggered by pictures. I was clenching to my mouse the entire time. It was very hyprocritical of them to make a video like that and it's a shame that they didn't include what you wanted them to. And very wrong of them to ask you to show them your scars. I felt like when they showed your interview, the pictures they showed looked like they were of you. And that wasn't right.

  • I can see why they would edit out a lot of your interview. Telling people "Look at what those crazy kids are doing! Blam! Cut! Zam! Blood!" is going to get more views, more reactions than "Oh, self injury is this, this is how you get help, and this is how you should help a fellow self harmer."

I am just tired of the news, and people in general, trying to promote the idea that self injury is a trend, that it is something new, that only certain people, usually teenager girls do it. Do...(TBC)

  • @ButterflyMagic

...people even do their research? There's so much information out there. There's no excuse why they could not of done a simple google search. Even Wikipedia would be better than nothing.

  • I saw the clip from the news and it was totally bull! I don't self harm because i saw it on youtube. I've been SH for 7 years and I'm 15 now. It makes me mad and sad that they put us selfharmers in such a bad light. They make us seem like we are bad and we are influenced by littlest of winds. And it's not a trend! Have you ever heard someone say that alcoholics are starting to become a trend this season! No it's a way to deal with problems and i think that what they forgot.

  • I'm really sorry this didn't turn out the way you expected! Honestly, I'm a bit fired up as well. I hate that they still refer to this as a 'trend'. I really have to agree with the video response to this. I'm sad they edited it to sound that way, but I didn't expect anything less from them :/ I don't think we can trust the media. I think the best thing we can do is handle it ourselves. Your channel is an amazing start, channels like this as well.

  • I watch the video and I see what you are saying. The thing that I had the most problem with (besides the pictures I mean WTF!) was that they said it was a trend among teens quite a few times. I hate when people say it is a trend. But all in all I guess its a good video. I mean they did get it out there. But still. Yeah. I don't know how I really feel about it.

  • @AmandaJuicebox

The fact that they try to make self injury as a teenager trend basically ignores the fact that other ages groups self harm as well.

  • On the up side maybe some people will find channels like yours by searching. Have you tried google to see if this bideo comes up with search terms which bring up the article? I think it is a good thing that you didn't show them your scars, they would have probably filmed them and shown it.

  • though they could have done more with this video. They did alot of good.

At the end they listed a place to start to seek help , and it builds awareness. I'm sure these things about the pics being you wheren't intended as the voice over said different. They obiously had a time limit and the editor.....was errr a bit rash with the editing. But they did there best. Not sure way eveyone is so mad.......wonder if everyone watched the fox clip or if they just feed off Melisa being upset.

  • @Bloodygeek1

I had to watch the clip again with your point of view in mind. I would imagine that maybe they werent used to the topic enough to know how to address it. They didnt have as much time as us to think about how to present it.

I do wish they had said everything that was in the description below the video. I wish they would have said that the pics were not of me and that my channel was different.

But I can see your point.

  • @idranktheseawater

I understand your dissipointment. thanks for seeing my view

  • @Bloodygeek1 I don't think this is the kind of publicism that fosters an understanding of self injury. I mean, they called it self mutilation and " the latest teen obsession" In my mind, what they did was demean and belittle the people who self harm. Also, as Melissa said, they made a triggering video, which was exactly what they said the problem was. I want self injury talked about and discussed, but it needs to be taken more seriously. Not as the latest teen obsession. I respect ur opinion tho

  • it is sad to hear they edited you so much, we can hope that at least maybe it will help some one find your helpful videos and maybe it will encourage then to find some help.

i am not going to watch the news clip because it sounds like something i should not see at this time and i remember them doing a similar story when i was younger making it sound like an unpleasant fashion trend and showing terrible pictures and i just wish the news would talk about this kind of thing truthfully. <3

  • That video really made me mad. The way they put the pictures on there while you were talking made it seem like you were posting your cuts and you're not. Screw Fox news.

  • I've been reading all the comments and felt someone should say something in Fox's defense, so I will. Umm, Nina Sparano is like seriously gorgeous. Ok, I'm done. :D

  • That sucks... you can't get the media to help you out, I guess. The great thing is that in 2011 we are the media. Youtube and other social media networks are where your demographic life not on Fox. Old ladies watch Fox news. I don't really know what they are trying to accomplish by their story but for me It does nothing. I love your videos. You do a fantastic job of getting your message out there in a wholesome way and candidly. The news interview doesn't over shadow what you do online.

  • Wow, that's really weird.. Is that video supposed to helt people stop or warn people? I mean, it is just as triggering as the videos on youtube. They are even using the same pictures. I don't understand why they didn't use the video where you were talking about how to help.. I wish they would have shown how amazing you really are.

  • the video made me really angry actually. I know you said it was truggereing but i didn't emagen there would be so many graphic images. it is just photo after photo after photo >< after seeing i couldn't not cut STUPID FOX NEWS

  • Ha, makes me embarrased to be from Colorado. They completly turned a video that could be helpful to people into something bad....so stupid.

  • the new's is bs...

  • I know they wouldn`t show all of your 15 min conversation, But it is obvious they cut you off mid sentence, I really did think those pics were of you, Around your bit of the video, But apperently not? Im guessing though, That a lot of people who watched it did think that, Still, As soon as you mentiond Fox News, I was a bit apprehensive, They have somewhat of a bad reputation in the U.K.

  • @xmoroseguyx

Those pics were definitely not of me.

  • @xmoroseguyx fox news has a bad reputation just about every where and for good reason.

  • @xmoroseguyx Yep the way they used those pics was as if to say "here is melissa and here is her wrist". And they only used the parts of her video that would contribute to their shock value. Very disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising

  • my guess is that they did just want the sensational parts of what you said. It is disappointing to me that they would put such graphic things on there and not talk about ways to get help.

  • its not a "trend"..its a mental disorder.

  • I watched the news clip before yours and tbh it was horrible "... self mutilation, a growing trend among teens..." WTH they think this is a trend when its been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. This is an adiction not a trend thats why I slipped this morining and cut my leg man i'm stupid!

  • Well I am from the UK and I have never heard anything like that on the news!

    ...

I can't beleive that on TV programs aka neighbours/ Eastenders (uk) have helplines at the end of each episode if the story line is senitive in anyway and the NEWS doesn't!

    ...

I my opinon they could of at least put a helpline at the bottom of the screen :)

  • ok i just saw the video and it wasnt nice how they treated you in the way you wanted. from being your fan i know what you like to show to your viewers.

  • funny that i saw something on tv about the younger generation and SI and now you mentioning this.

  • @RedRavenRedFox- very true, si was around well before the media and they only showed the bad side of si online, they never mentioned all the online videos that give information, all the websites and groups that give information and support to self injurers.

  • @punkydavid07 and that she wants to get her message across.

  • @punkydavid07 I agree with what you just said. To be honest it makes me mad that they have aired this video portraying self injury in this way, I just think of the millons of people that were watching the news that morning and were possibly upset or trigged by those images. I feel the video should have been different, people are working towards making people more aware of si and then there are videos like this one, I think it's great that Melissa choose to participate in this video and that

  • Was this video aired on Fox news? If it was am glad that they decided to air something on s.i, although I feel the video should have been made in a less triggering way, not all the video on youtube promote si

  • That clip is horrible. There was NOTHING helpful about it at all. If anything, it represented self injury as a stupid little thing teenagers do, and provided ideas on more ways to self injure with graphic images to trigger people into it further. If those images are a problem on Youtube where few see them, how can they not understand that it's an even bigger problem to include a huge string of them on national tv? Their angle absolutely disgusts me. I hate Fox.

  • @punkydavid07 right on man. right on<3

  • how is self-harm a trend thats fucked up how they put that saying that on air an all them triggering photos like that they could have put up helplines an other things like that but your videos do help people your videos helped me so much i was at my lowest point when i found your videos it helped nowing there are other people that deal with this

  • I really hate how they called it a 'teen obsession' and a 'trend'. -_- It is also way too triggering for the kind of video it claims to be. You're right about it being very hypocritical that they're complaining about triggering videos and then their ENTIRE video is covered in really graphic pictures. It could have been such a helpful video but they really tried to make it too sensational...

  • I think they forget that its not a "youtube" epidemic,

    its just overflow,

if youtube wasnt here, then SI would still exist.

  • Classic sensationalistic fox news. They frequently edit things out of context all the time. But thats what you'd expect a conservative organisation with an agenda it relentlessly pushes.

Anyway, "the world is run by those who show up" is one of my favourite quotes. You showed up. You tried your best to get your message out. You raised awareness. Your intentions were noble and thats what really matters and I think you should be very proud of that.

  • stupid fox news!

  • You are probably right, I would bet that Nina wasn't the one who put the final clip together. I bet they have video editor people who do all that while Nina moves on to her next story.

  • @ChannelingusIV

    I think that's true.

Nina was very kind and considerate during the interview. She didnt seem at all like the person to put things together that way.

  • wow thumbs down to fow news! I didn't watch the fox video since you said it was triggering but just from what you said and other peoples comments it sounds horrible. Thank you for trying to get Fox's story straight, figures they would turn around and do something like that though ):

  • I just watched that news clip and omg i couldn't believe it. They make SI sound like it is a teenage trend and not a real problem or at least thats what i got from it. I also thought it was stupid to show a bunch of triggering photos and such that cause people to SI rather then to take the time and give people resources that could help solve the problem.

  • That news video is crazy they said that teenagers watch people self harm on youtube, when clearly that does not happen, it's about helping each other not to feel so alone and different, in a way it is a community. they also said that the youtubers are teenagers but i only watch 1 youtube teenager, the rest like yours and self harm support are adults that know what they're talking about. I hope they do some better research next time!

  • Woah! I've never seen a FOX news thing before (from UK) and I have to say that vid was sensationalised to extremes. It was completely unnecessary to use that many graphic images just for shock value. Melissa you did a wonderful job but were clearly edited to portray only the ways you've self harmed. I'm shocked and upset that this is how self harm is being portrayed by FOX, its handled much better on the news in the UK. At least here they put where to get help at the end :/

  • they want a news scandal that'll bring in viewers, they dont really want to help us, they just want to point it out, get support for their stations and be seen as if their trying to to help

what really helps us is this, not FOX

    Thanks Seawater

  • That video wasn't to educate or discuss how to tackle this problem it was to shock and frighten parents. Also the way those photo's of some slim white girl were edited in between your video during your audio gave an impression they were your photos. What you do in your video are mindful and helpful to others those other videos are a world apart. Very disappointed with this report. It almost just dealt with the generalities the info we all know anyway.

  • hiya just so u know you are heard :) i'm in the UK so ur messages are heard world wide, and me and some friends admire and look up 2 u, ur an amazing person hope ur doing well xx

  • IMHO, Fox did a really poor job. I agree with you that it was somewhat "hypocritical". Would've liked to hear more than 5-10 secs. of what you had to say. I hope that parents won't ban kids from Youtube just because Fox did a horrible job of presenting/talking about this issue. You've done a great job with your videos, and helped a lot of people with your vids. I hope you are invited back to Fox so you can discuss SI properly, or at least say that there are people who help on youtube.

  • That new spot sucked..

  • as a journalistic clip, especially in a mass media source like Fox, its an obviously pattern of selling the news, in my opinion they were sensacionalist, and the desiese, nd parent concern point of view its just to chock the viewers... its a shame that they doenst have a real concern, and they are acctualy not trying to help anybody...

  • You're right, they didn't do justice to some of the stuff you've said here on youtube.

  • wow thats retarded how they made it seem like all SI vids on utube r bad, when thats not true cuz there r alot of vids like urs that help people. and thats so stupid that they asked to see ur scars. they dont even know u and they're expecting that u'll just show them. not very understanding at all. and it was really dumb how they would show pics of someones scars right after a clip of u talking to make people think those were ur scars. im sorry it didnt turn out better for u :(

  • Originally it was ABC that wanted to air it ,if i heard melissa correctly, maybe it would have been presented better in person .Fox ,overdo everything, fear ,fear, fear, like the plague..run.

  • @gringoboy9

ABC did air the triggering youtube story on Good morning America. ABC, FOX and CBC all contacted me for the story.

  • I agree that it was good to create awareness for SH. But ever since the day the media started to report this, I honestly did not see/read a single thing about there being videos on YouTube to help prevent SI. It just makes me really angry. It really looks like the media just wanted to report what they thought to be the most shocking to viewers/readers. Anyways, your message has gone out to many people already. You were the first person that I saw talk about it on YouTube. And this really helped

  • holy shit Melissa is finally recognized! Fox went on about it like it was a trend and that photos are pro self injury. Which is completely false because people who self injure can't stop and they absolutely hate it. The news went on about it completely in the wrong way

  • That was beyond triggering...Leave it to fox to spread some fucking bullshit :/

  • Wow, I'm so sorry that your interview turned out this way. All FOX News did was further the stigma of SI when they chose to ignore the countless number of videos you & others post in an attempt to steer people away from SI & send a positive, helpful, and encouraging message to your viewers that there is hope. With that said, I hope you never give up on your mission to educate and help others. These types of news stories are a perfect example of why we need to speak out more and speak loudly! :)

  • @xangirl88: I agree. I've seen more S.I. Awareness, personal stories & vlogs rather than pro-cutting vids on youtube & that was never mentioned. To Melissa, I am so glad you chose to stay! You do so much good for others, you just don't know how far reaching your words carry. *hugs* Fox news is notorious for slanted stories. It's good S.I. Awareness was brought to the mass media, but they went about it the wrong way. They sensationalized it more than the more graphic vids on youtube!

  • That's the f*cked up thing with the media. They put all these extreme pics in the video and than all of a sudden the viewers see your face.. like the images belong to you. Yes, I know the voice-over says you don't post images of your 'many scars from years of self-injury' but that doesn't mean that people will link those images to your face.. :( You rock Melissa and you are doing so much good for people who struggle with self injury!

    Oh my goodness.

I hadnt noticed that it looked like those pics were of me. It really does look that way.

But there was no voice-over that said I dont post pics like that. It was written in the article below the vid, but all those who watched it on tv would never have known that.

  • Also, wanted to add that I think your channel is amazing. What you're doing is a thousand times more helpful than just blatantly telling people, "Oh, don't look self injury topics up on youtube! They're all horrible!"

    Keep up the good work!

  • I really don't consider Fox News to actually be... news. It seemed from watching that clip that all they cared about was creating a horrifically distasteful segment on something that could have been done in a much more... positive way.

I don't think Fox cared about people getting help. They wanted a "breaking news" story. "Oh my goodness! Look what your children are doing!?" And not "Let's talk about this and explain that it's not something to be ashamed of and there IS help out there."

  • i just watched the news video O_O the pictures were not nice O_O your part was good though :D

  • IMO, on Fox's part, that was poor journalism. They should have been more balanced instead of focusing on only one side of the coin. I think they could have listed some resources and places where the kids go get help in dealing with the stresses that they are subject to.

  • @Donnyboy1984

I agree. That's what bothers me about it.

  • @idranktheseawater Journalism is all about being the public's window to the world, and listing resources where kids can go when in trouble is one of them. FOX failed where that's concerned

  • @Donnyboy1984 Fox is the definition of crappy journalism. It's a shame that someone else couldn't have carried the story.

  • Not trying to be hurtful, but, in my opinion, Fox News is not a real news station. I think being on TV is cool and I like that Fox is doing a great thing by getting the message out there, but they tend to sensationalize things. perhaps you'll get on another show and they'll do a better job. well, I'm off to watch the video.

  • I really dislike how the focus was on the methods and the whole shock value, not to mention the extreme focus on the teenage demographic. As you said the lack of important information was depressing as well.

If anything they're just fuelling the fire and increasing stigma of the topic.

  • I feel like the media is only focusing on the triggering video and not the helpful/recovery videos. They are not showing both sides to videos on YouTube about self-injury. They are using triggering pictures and telling us not to use them?! It makes no sense!

P.S. don't delete your account! you help soooo many people!
