A musician trying to perform is just like a shipwrecked person sending a bottle at sea hoping for someone to find it and discover his lifestory. I don't think you can perform or listen this song without realizing how wonderful it is if you have this gift of "speaking" with musical sounds. This performance seems to me very...how should I put it...."intimate" for loss of a better word.

This is so intimate it's almost scary for me, a lifelong Police fan. There are wonderful touches, especially around the end, but there are also many vocal mannerisms that I don't like, because they have a sort of spoiled or lazy or posh or soul-mimicking feeling. So many subtleties, then. The nagging question is this: is he performing seriously from the heart here? Is he being honest with his son/song?

Alright, Sting is classically trained and he is an excellent musician and artist. Andy Summers is his guitarist, and Sting plays a fret-less bass, this guy can play his song anyway he feels it because its his, and that's artistic licence. I love Message in a Bottle, all musicians after so many decades of non-stop playing their own music can become tired of it, but their music is like their child and no parent ever gives up on their own children.

My comment was really in praise of Sting. He's actually one of the best bassists in rock. He's better on his second instrument (guitar) than most. But virtuosity is not what defines him. His music communicates his soul. You are right. He is a great performer and artist; I just saw him and can vouch for that fact. I was really defending him to people who want to take him to task for not being Andres Segovia or at least Andy Summers. Doesn't matter; he's Sting!

Right now there thousands of guys (and girls) shredding in their parents' basements who are technically better guitarists than Sting. And most of them will never get out of the basement or their local bar at best. Why? Because they lack the package: Superior song-writing, a great (and unique) voice, good looks, a great stage presence, charm and charisma. Sting has it all! Sting writes music that both musicians and the public loves. He has intangibles that only a rare few can be said to possess.

May you RIP and fade away forever. On the flip side, this is the best version of this bad song I have heard so far. I'm a huge Police fan. Never liked it in 1980 and still don't like it today. Stu's drumming on Regatta, as always, is spectacular.
