  • sax player?

  • Awesome. Bought this tape when it came out..never knew there was a video for this..

Can't believe its been 25 years.

  • This brings back memories of listening to WLIR (later WDRE) in NYC back in the day.

    Oh, I feel so old.

  • woah hes got spock ears

  • the best rock of the 80s

  • How can this band be underrated?? Their songs are awesome. Those people at that time have very bad taste. Thumbs up if u agree

  • This is the second-best cover of "Born To Run", right behind "I Melt With You".

  • My favorite ME song, can relate to it very well lol

  • Yep, good times.....then not long after that, the music industry started selling rap shit....."Yo rape yo mom, kill a cop.....gibs me a gat...." How did we reverse progress and class?

  • oh wow!!! I was in 6th grade when i first heard this... i wrote the words of this song down in a letter to a girl i really liked, even though I was sure she was musically inept and never heard of Mod Eng...lol needless to say it didnt get me anywhere..lol! still love this song, makes me feel my youth once again! Thank for posting it!

  • so amazing.. I love it! bengmateo

  • so amazing.. I love it!

  • This song reminds me of printing

  • @GossInternational1 Just out of curiosity: Why is that.....?!? *g*.....)

  • @kernerschreiber13 Well, when you print, you need "ink and paper", you know, kind of like one of the most technologically advanced printing presses built by Goss International. I'm just saying...

  • @GossInternational1 I see.....) haha

Just a brilliant tune here, tough......just ddi order the "Sop Start" CD.....it will be worth it for sure......!!

  • Buy Stop Start on CD!!!

    amazon.com/Stop-Start-Modern-English/dp/B003BI76RI/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1303819318&sr=1-1

  • I thought this LP was supposed to be bunk ... I really like this song!

  • @WeHaveExplosive This was their best LP as far as I'm concerned. It was the most consistent. There were a few good ones on this one vs. the 2 or 3 good songs on the others. Could completely just be me, however. Worth a listen, though, right?

  • @brianab31 If I ever see a copy of Stop Start, I'll buy it just for this song ;)

  • Now this is from an obscure album--Stop Start. I actually had this on cassette back then, but never really cared for it--just didn't like the direction their sound went on this one. I prefer their earlier albums on the 4AD label much more--now that was some of the best 80's music around. I wore my After the Snow tape out.

  • The song is similar to Breaking Away in terms of energy. This song is nowhere to be found. ITunes should do something.

Ricochet Days is a great album too. The song Rainbow's End is a super new wave song.

Modern English like any new wave group were popular in the Philippines during the 80's in high schools, colleges and universities.

  • Does this song not rule? How can this not be available anywhere on cd. The cd was awesome and this song one of the best from the 80's. Anyone know where I can get an MP3 of this album?

  • @StuPitt1 I have the .mp3 of Ink And Paper, I could send you a download link if you like?

  • does anyone know where Nell is these days? he was me mate when on tour through Connecticut and Pennsylvania in 1986 -- they all played happy-birthday to me on kazoos for my 18th birthday and they were stars for doing it -- hope the guys are all good -- hope the hotel rooms have recovered their losses!

  • @peppermintpast He plays with New Model Army has done for years now

  • it was never forgotten my friend.

  • Back to the 80's..... una clásica de radio 99.1 FM Lima, Perú. El CD lo acaba de relanzar nuestros amigos de Wounded Bird Records, una vez más....... THANKS !!!!

  • Amazing 80's !! love this band.

  • This Is A Wonderful Rare Video!!!

  • No low-waisted pants here!

  • damn forgot about this song , thanks for posting it. :o)

  • Listening to old stuff today.... this is the ONLY vid I played my 10 week old grand daughter perked up, smiled & was moving her feet & hands to. Show's she has CLASS already!

  • This is better than Melt. Just a fun, irrelevant great song.

  • @eatatmargos "Irrelevant" really?? I always found this song to be a bit more substantive than just irrelevant.

  • @Lunatic4Bizcas I'm sorry you have taken my comment out of context.... it was meant as fun, nice beat & an un-angry message about a love gone south.

  • @eatatmargos

Maybe you meant Irreverent...? Anyway, this is a good, catchy, jangly guitar-pop song.

  • @powrxplor69 thank you for catching my word error.

  • Great Song, this band does tend to be overshadowed by "I Melt With You". I heard this album "Stop Start" just got remastered for the first time on CD since 1986.

I also found that this band is back on tour with new material. Good to know that good music is still alive and well.

  • Ahhh, the great, lost Modern English album, Stop Start.

The album - finally - got released on CD this year.

  • modern english was fucking awesome, I LOVE YOU GARY!!!!!

  • Don't forget about Ricochet Days. That was an awesome song too. I don't know if there was ever a video for it, was there?

  • a talented group that is SO MUCH MORE than just I Melt WIth You...sorry America never acknowledged your greatness!

  • WOW, were back!

  • i miss this song so much....very new wave danceable!!!!

  • cause tramps like us,--- baby we were born to ruuuuun !!!!

  • this song was a great comeback, after i melt with you and hands across the sea, everybody said modern english was done

  • Best song of all time.

  • i can send you the mp3

  • wow!!! this is my first time to see this video after less than 30 years!!!

  • how did a song like this miss the american top 40? what a great fricking catchy tune! ink and paper!

  • the best song ever!!!

  • I try to catch these guy every time they come to California, seen them at the Coach House, Strand ect. maybe 10 times

    underrated band

  • I remember them performing at Magic Mountain in spring of 85.

  • OH SHIT...I WAS THERE!!!!

  • what do you mean, where you one of the band, OMG, YARE YOU RICHARD BROWN THE DRUMMER

  • Great song, great video but who is the pirate dude on guitar?

  • same guitarist from their 1st three lp's- Gary McDowell (I am 99% sure), though he once had blond hair!

  • and that's the bass player michael conroy playing the second guitar.

got to open up for them many years ago. and opened for a flock of seagulls too!

    cool guys all around.

  • ang lupit talaga ng mga the best of new wave.....naalalako nung nasa pinas pa ko hehe

  • Thanks for posting this song! I love this song but always wondered who sang it!

  • Great Band!!!! Nice Song......

  • Such an amazing video, I feel sad and up-beat at the same time.

  • anyone have a twenty on "Modern English Live in Miami"? the ink and paper version in that concert was damn good!

  • ink and paper!!! OOOOOH!!!

    Ink & Paper!!! <3

  • this song is my life. I am this song. oh my dear, Robbie is so HOT!!! and I'm fifteen! :)

  • I LOVE THIS DAMN SONG!!! :) YES!!!!

  • worked stage crew at Charlottesville show in 1985 or 1986. But you guys did not come to the after party or did you? Long Ryders may have opened.

  • Ted l worked with them on "everything is mad" and acted like he was the frigging messiah. I was so glad when he was sacked.

  • I was a bit confused with the reference to Ted Mason above. To be clear, Ted was not a member of Modern English from inception or during their major song writing output. The original members of Modern English were: Robbie Grey, Gary MacDowell, Mick Conroy and Dick. Steve Walker joined them as keyboard player and they were the ORIGINAL AND CELEBRATED MODERN ENGLISH. Nothing else mattered or compares.

P.S. I dont know who Ted Mason is and I am family! How mad is that?

  • Thankfully the 80's never really died!

  • Ted Mason wasn't in the band. The guy with red hair and beard is Gary. Blonde bass player is Mick. Aaron on keyboards. Nell on guitar, John J on drums and of course Robbie

  • which one is gary and which one is ted, this has been bothering me for years, PLEASE TELL ME, oh, WE NEED SOME LIVE MODERN ENGLISH

  • Awesome Video, Fantastic song! Long Live the 80's. Thanks for Posting.

  • yeah, my dad listen to this song when he was young, said it was popular

  • woohooo!!! wicked!!!i love this track!!!new wave at its finest...thanks for posting!!!

  • This one's SWEET! I remember it!

We gotta put Hands Across the Sea back up!!!

  • this is such a kick ass song that never got the crdit it deserved. great music from a great group. how I miss the 80.s

  • CLASSIC!!!

  • This song is so underrated on radio; I have a 45 of this, which I've burned to CD...the 45 hardly has a scratch on it. It's great to be able to see a video of this song.

  • Great to see for the first time, since the guys asked me to do the drums for the video. Thanks for posting.

  • John,

Mick and I were watching this for the first time too! Saw your message and thought it has to be you! Maria and Mick Conroy. Often think about you with a lovely smile. How are you? Do let us know how you are and what you are doing.

    The Conroys xxx

  • mick, is gary the one with the white hair (awesome haircut) or the one with the red hair, or is that ted mason

  • actually, this song was a hit in the 80s!

  • Great Song, Great Video, Great Album...this album and song deserved more airplay than it had in the 80's...enough said.

  • ésta canción pertenece al 4ª album STOP/START de 1985 creo .buen tema

  • it's a shame they produce such holy shit like this whereas the first album was cold and robust.

  • I'll be gettin to gogether with Robbie and Gilly in a few weeks time, i'll tell him about this posting.

  • Thank you so much for posting this song. This song confused a lot of people back then because it sounded like Melt with You.

  • Capt. Morgan plays a mean guitar and pours a good shot !

  • LOL.....now that funny!

  • You mean Gary McDowell who is one of the original members.

  • was gary mcdowell the one with the fucked up beard or the one with the white hair that appeared in the i melt with you and some ones calling video.....or was that ted mason!

  • @Cigarmark freaking hilarious!!!

  • OMG thank you SO MUCH for sharing this!! I only saw this video ONCE on VideoOne in Los Angeles when I was a kid and never forgot it!

  • They've got another cool song, "The Border" which is not as famous as "Melt with You" or "Hands Across the Sea."

  • Very underrated ME tune.

  • ^^Agree^^

  • ...it's just the one guy, though. I would love to hear the story behind that!

  • Looks like they have a little bit of the captain in them in this vid! HA HA!!! Funny stuff.

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs.

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken but this was not actually written by Modern English. This was written by the excellent pop songsmith, Tommy Dunbar, formerly of the great bubblegum power pop band Rubinoos.

The modern english guys are great in this video and man do they make this song theirs. I love the recording too. Sonically... The drums sound excellent to me. I'll have to look up who produced this.

  • Like this one alot. Looks like they have a little of the captain in them on this vid. LOL!

  • Aysus.. Kinilabutan ako sa ganda ng music. Took me back in time when i was trying to save money from my allowance to buy an album in cassette tape of this band.

...Ink and Paper, totally carefree music... Im stuck in the 80's music and i love it.

  • Unfuckin believeable stuff of the 80's I grew up with this song came out along with I MELT WITH YOU. After The Snow album and this album STOP START.

  • muy buena banda la epoca del cole

  • I freakin' LOVE this song. They used to tour like crazy. Always a favorite. Cheesy vid but a great band.

  • yeah... ink and paper... forever..

  • lead vocalist looks a bit like David Bowie

  • totally agree! undeniably gold!

    yeeeeeeeeeeeha! stay gold!

  • OK song from a dreadful album. No wonder 4AD dropped them. What's the deal with that red-haired pirate guy? Thanks for the video. I would pay to see the 'Hands Across The Sea' video. Please, please, please?

  • the pirate guy kills. And the dancing on the singer...needs to drop the log big time. the words in the background..lol. This video is soo funny. The song rules though.

  • Awesome

  • the 80's, wish i can go back in time...those were the days being young and carefree, new wave lives on !!!
