If these generators are so efficient (In the right place), why do we need so many of the damn things? Mark my words, sometime in the future there is going to be a major accident because of these eyesores. Human beings, can never discipline themselves to maintain things. Know what I mean? It might be simple, in principle. but it hasn't been thought through. The out-take demonstrates why wind-generators are generally useless. No wind and they are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

With the traditional windmill one does not have to turn the blades in the direction of the wind. All you have to do is fit the back half of the windmill with a Tail (like in a plane). However what you have to make sure is that the wind mill is mounted on vertical shaft that allows it to turn in any direction. Also the shaft should be connected a little off center of the windmill, slightly more towards the blades that will allow the tail to swing, making the blades face the wind at all times.

If you search here you'll find lots of PVC hand pumps. All you have to do is connect the pump handle to the pulley. Couple of notes. Make sure you offset your pump handle in relation to the windmill shaft. Make sure you use a "double action" pump.

yes you need to take the low voltage AC current from the generator, make it DC with a diode reciftier and capacitor and then you can use it to charge up a battery. The first two windmills will create about 5V, good enough to trickle charge a mobile .. but you might need to use a regulator circuit to make sure that gusts of wind dont create too much power and damage the phone. This is not expensive to do. Jonathan

@VegaScienceTrust Some years back, I made a voltage regulator for a machine much like what you show at 1:38. One problem with this sort of generator is that a strong wind tries to blow them over. It get worse when the generator is turning. With it stopped, the wing is stalled and there is a smaller constant force on the axle instead of the big pulse when it is at speed. It used the trick of putting a big load on the generator to stall it out.

it generates electricity when the wind turbine rotates and drives (spins) the magnets. These are close to a coil of wire and the voltage you get from the coil depends on: the speed you can spin the magnets, the strength of the magnets, the number of turns of wire, the area of the coil etc. See Creative science web site for details. Make a tail to the head of that first one, so it can move to the winds direction. Then put it all on a low toque spin-wheel on the ground. The windmill would now spin in the direction of the wind and you would get maximum wind power out of it :)

have you applied a motor to it yet? mine isn't a vertical, ad hauls butt till I add the 1 to 5 gear ratio to it and the motor. I had an idea since it's easier to reduce the gears from 5 to 1 than 1 to 5, we should be able to use a pully system that gradually uses the gears to pull up a 100lb weight with ease, and hit a lever to drop, while producing enough rpm to charge a battery bank, this way all of the wind is utalized for power at some point as a cycle, instead of relying on high wind only

It is not a wind generator because it does not generate wind and it is not a wind mill because it is not milling. It is a turbine. It generates electricity. More specifically, electrical current. There's no problem with a horizontal axis windmill pointing to the wind. Ever heard of a tail? A tail on a windmill would be a fundamental piece you left out of the horizontal design.  So, the only problem is something that was left out? HAWT is standard in all wind farms, that's because its design outperforms all others..

You could store the power using deep cycle batteries. Especially if you live in a place with inconsistant wind gusts. Or maybe use solar as well as wind to keep a steady supply of power?

I made one of those one of those once, out of wood. It was 29 feet and 7 inches tall and was a vertical windmill that spun on a custom made ballberrings and shaft that you could attach various machinery and devices to. Each wing was 21 feet tall and 9 feet wide. Unfortunately, a storm ended its proud tall life to a pile of splintered wood. I only have one photo of it -_-

I'm surprised as a DR. you would not know that all you need to keep the windmill facing into the wind is a simple VANE. A weather vane is a horizontal tail that keeps pointed into the wind. (This is not rocket science)

Ha! yes you are quite right. The trouble with windmills that use tails is that that the whole thing turns around so you need some kind of slip ring for the cables so they dont get snagged.
