i honestly don't want to sound like the person who only likes the video, but honestly, I prefer Rosmarie Ford. This Bombalurina is just too..... awful. She's just not very good and I'm not sure how she got the role. She sounds a bit too old to me... But Demeter isn't half bad. :)
Take into consideration that the filmed cast had the benefit of recording in a studio, they could re-record takes and fix the audio as needed. Performing live, the sound is obviously quite different. I don't care for this Bombalurina's voice, really, but I think Demeter's quite nice.
I really do prefer Rosemarie Ford and Aeva May. Reasons 1. They can lift their legs up to their faces, and not 2 inches in the air. 2. These 2 seem a little too "dramatic". Demeter does in the beginning, at least. 3. Rosemarie has a soft, beautiful voie, and Marlene has a rough, deep voice... 4. Their costumes and make up were kinda better :/ But that's just what i think! No hatezzzzz :)

But it's not like they couldn't have done better, they had singing pretty down but I would have liked to see more emotion. Macavity is supposed to have done something horrible to her that scarred her - like in the movie and Broadway versions, she looks upset throughout it. The yseemed slinky and sexy enough, but didn't have the right emotion.
I will never forget when they showed this. They had just shown CATS on PBS (a few months before that), I was living in Arizona and they didn’t show it there so Mom taped it for me and sent it to me along with the TV guide article. After that I watched the video 2 or 3 times a day for a year! Then in the fall of ’99 this was on the Today Show and I was able to tape it!!!

I love Deme's make-up , its so pretty , I think people issue with Marlene's interpretation of Bomba is the fact that Bomba is less sensual and feminine and Marlene makes her feistier , to be quite honest I dont enjoy her performance as much others , but its still a good , powerful interpretation of Bombalurina....=)

Rosemarie and Marlene are very different people, and both of them take on the role differently. Both actresses are amazingly talented but neither surpasses the other. Considering Marlene stayed with the show for 19 years, I'd say she had a lot of dedication. It didn't take common sense to say Rosemarie was better; it took a lot of closemindedness.
well, you have to keep in mind that in the filmed version they used people who have been in the industry for a while. They;re more professional. Aslo, when you film something, they get to be able to go over the voices, dub them, mix them, change them, fix them, tweek then, even use a completly different voice for them. I know that 'jemima' in the filmed version had a diff voice to get rid of her accent. They have to concentrate on just dancing. These guys have to on dancing and singing, both.
No they're not. I think they're both really good. I can see nothing wrong with their singing, dancing., or acting. You're just so used to the film version that anything that deviates from that seems jarring to you.
whether you like this version or not...nothing can be as bad as the local version of cats i saw last nite, whatever choreography that wasn't eliminated was completely changed and that is blasphemy....I was not impressed at all i was DE-pressed. it was completely unnecessary to change/cut out the dancing....thats half the show right there.
@AmbraVittoria Cats IS dancing (and singing but to get the full effect of being a cat dancing is key) I mean, how can they seem cat-like without dance?! It just isn't right!

The only real problem was the fact that Demeter and Bombalurina aren't quite syncing. Demeter is a hair behind vocally. But, as I recall, when this was filmed, that Demeter had JUST joined the cast. I could be wrong. As for being bad, once again, you're used to the video and the choreography and style is very different in the live/Broadway production. I used to feel the same way. Trust me once you see it live, you forget the comparison and it's phenomenal. Wish it was still running on Bway

You must see ... they usually play in a theatre in front of several hundreds of people. They have to pronounce things different, so that everybody (as well those who're sitting in the last row) can understand the lyrics.
Apsaragus is a switch, it means that if they need a certain number of cats in a scene they can drag him into it. In all thought though they should have used the female switch, but oh well.
Eeek, sorry! Yes, I mean swing. At my school we always joke by calling it a switch because we have guys who sometimes fill in for the parts that should belong to a girl, and the girls do the same. So it's called a switch ^_^

man women i love you for agreeing with us. its seems to me that the only people with some common sense on this comment section are the ones who think Rosemarie was a way better actor, singer, and dancer. so for ur comment i luv you.

Rosemarie and Marlene are very different people, and both of them take on the role differently. Both actresses are amazingly talented but neither surpasses the other. Considering Marlene stayed with the show for 19 years, I'd say she had a lot of dedication. It didn't take common sense to say Rosemarie was better; it took a lot of closemindedness.

well, you have to keep in mind that in the filmed version they used people who have been in the industry for a while. They;re more professional. Aslo, when you film something, they get to be able to go over the voices, dub them, mix them, change them, fix them, tweek then, even use a completly different voice for them. I know that 'jemima' in the filmed version had a diff voice to get rid of her accent. They have to concentrate on just dancing. These guys have to on dancing and singing, both.

No they're not. I think they're both really good. I can see nothing wrong with their singing, dancing., or acting. You're just so used to the film version that anything that deviates from that seems jarring to you.

whether you like this version or not...nothing can be as bad as the local version of cats i saw last nite, whatever choreography that wasn't eliminated was completely changed and that is blasphemy....I was not impressed at all i was DE-pressed. it was completely unnecessary to change/cut out the dancing....thats half the show right there.

@AmbraVittoria Cats IS dancing (and singing but to get the full effect of being a cat dancing is key) I mean, how can they seem cat-like without dance?! It just isn't right!

@AmbraVittoria they were also working with no real stage when they did this; I think its ok. The filmed version was like the the elite of the elite; it was cast from many different shows put together

The only real problem was the fact that Demeter and Bombalurina aren't quite syncing. Demeter is a hair behind vocally. But, as I recall, when this was filmed, that Demeter had JUST joined the cast. I could be wrong. As for being bad, once again, you're used to the video and the choreography and style is very different in the live/Broadway production. I used to feel the same way. Trust me once you see it live, you forget the comparison and it's phenomenal. Wish it was still running on Bway

You must see ... they usually play in a theatre in front of several hundreds of people. They have to pronounce things different, so that everybody (as well those who're sitting in the last row) can understand the lyrics.

Apsaragus is a switch, it means that if they need a certain number of cats in a scene they can drag him into it. In all thought though they should have used the female switch, but oh well.

Eeek, sorry! Yes, I mean swing. At my school we always joke by calling it a switch because we have guys who sometimes fill in for the parts that should belong to a girl, and the girls do the same. So it's called a switch ^_^
