Oh my god your sick dude....no diss but homie i dont see you writing a book on your account.....yall new school be trippin hard on definitions...it absolutley consumes yall...
Again I got nothing but love for you slick. I'm still learning shit myself. I aint gunna sit and preach like I know it all but I will speak logically on the subject because its healthy. I got love for Sam and the E.B's as well. Taco. MJ, King Kobra, and all the originals..Don Cambell, I love all you for what you've given to the world. but for the sake of the art this is bigger than any one person. This is about the Culture the ART FORM keep the dance alive.
The understanding of ticking & popping here is off. Ticking & Popping are from the same family YES, but where is the CONTRACTION OF THE MUSCLES in the 1960's videos? These people in the videos are tense but ARE NOT CONTRACTING their muscles! Ticking there needs to been a double timed CONTRACTION, A CLEAR POP! Also, ticking is not the robot by any means, nor is doll movement ticking. I will not argue that these robotic/doll slow strobe like movements weren't around but...
PART 2: I will argue the connection trying to be made here to say that MUSCLE CONTRACTION the way that SAM DID IT was being done then! SAM doesn't claim to invent the robot or doll like strobe type movements. The STOP GO movements looks more like slow form of strobing mixed with botting than it does ticking. I don't see any ticking being done here at all. No disrespect to you Slick. I respect your opinion 100% homie. I actually have a verly clean, hard, wavey, robotic style myself...
I do boog but I never limit myself to a one style. I think as people we are going to learn the styles that appeal to us personally. Whatever those styles are will shape up that person as a dancer. If you are someone who loves to dance then learn those dances well and built on those styles you like with pride and make sure you execute them with quality. I am in 100% agreement that discrimination of a style is racist in the world of dance and it is wrong. The problem is biasness....
For me personally I wanna learn as much as I can, I LOVE URBAN DANCING STRAIGHT UP. There are some styles I don't care to much for like "locking" and "scarecrow" but I WILL NEVER KNOCK people for it. Its hard to get non biased judges, as as people we are drawn most to that which personally attracts us, and what attracts us is different from person to person. I like crunchy peanut butter but my boy may like smooth. As DANCERS we need to learn to respect all styles of DANCE!
not just the ones that we are drawn to. We need to recognize that all of them take skill to perform. MUSICALITY needs to be taken into consideration and the quality or level that each dance style is being executed at needs to be taken into account. Phillips Chbeeb's WAVING IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL FROM EVERYONE but Robert Muraines contortion/ bone breaking is beyond Phillips...so who wins? Should it come down to personal preference or over skill in the dances used, character, musicality, etc.
I think that maybe a redefinition of the styles is needed. I had an SEVERAL O.G's explain to me about what animation was TACO being one of them, Wiggles, BAM BAM, and Reverse from Deadly Venom Mob. and got a just from all of them to get the basis but as to 100% understand it NO because they some of them had different things to say about it. And this is a problem when you have many O.G's saying slightly different things! Proper interpretation of the styles needs to be made...
and the reason is because one little thing changes the appearance, purpose, and variables of the entire style. We have to get to the original versions of these dances and The inventors need to state their inspirations (if any) and be CLEAR and I mean CLEAR about what their idea or image of the dance is or was. I got one o.g telling me "COSMIC WAVES" are apart of the foundation of animation and SEVERAL others who never mentions cosmic waving to be apart of the "FOUNDATION" of it.
Stop motion (also known as stop action) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Motion animation using clay is called clay animation or clay-mation.
Animation A style and a technique where you imitate film characters being animated by stop motion. The technique of moving rigidly and jerky by tensing muscles and using techniques similar to strobing and the robot to make it appear as if the dancer has been animated frame by frame. This style was heavily inspired by the dynamation films created by Ray Harryhausen, such as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958). Im sorry "COSMIC WAVES" SHOULDN'T BE APART OF the animation foundation.
My point is that O.G.s need to get their shit together in explain shit properly before teaching it. Its been made obvious to me listen to O.G.s talk that lots has been mixed up in the learning process in their days and as it was passed on from generation to generation.
In order for credibility to be given to your for your invention you NEED to have your shit together! it has to be explained precisely DETAILED!!! cause slight variations means BRAND NEW STYLES WHEN YOUR HUNGRY
Soon we are going to have to start adding numbers next to the stlye names cause everyone wants credit for shit! "okay bro, SAM popped like this and this this and this, but look close homie look close. See this I'm popping like this...I pop different from SAM so I just invented POPPING 2 brother! YO EVERYONE CHECK THIS SHIT OUT...POPPING 2 new style of popping people" shit is crazy.
ALL the O.G.s need to sit down in one room. sort out all of their shit. on tape and then represent the styles with THEIR DEFINITIONS ON IT on how it was then! and if your a dancer now and you feel like you have come up with something new...get the shit on tape with a thorough detailed explanation of what it is, so there is no disputing that you are the creator. AND BE REAL PEOPLE BE FUCKING REAL ABOUT IT. I'm posting a video soon discussing some styles I got coming that aint being done
The robot to music is the robot dance, otherwise you are just pretending to be a robot. Flex/release the muscles & using other systems of movement that break the boundaries of the robot system of movement is Popping. Dimestopping in a continuous movement (chitty chitty bang bang clip) is strobing (moving in a strobe light). Ticking is double time popping. From what you said if you glide you are a popper. Where as gliding is a style by itself, which goes well with Popping/waving/boogaloo etc.
Robot is movement that stops and starts. Popping involves hard hits which can be done without moving your arms or legs. Think about it....... you can hit without moving your arms which makes popping a stand alone style apart from the Robot which can only be done by moving your arms and legs. Dancing to the beat in robot style is just just that, but popping can be done with waves, chest rolls and many other movements that are not done in Robot....
While watching this video, I couldn't help notice that no reference was paid to tense and release of the muscles. In the old videos shown I didn't see a tense release effect done by the girl doll or the young boy robot. Where does tense release fit into this?
@waves Ok I getcha now... So you're explaining the use of the robot in popping but leaving out the concept of you're muscles because it's obvious anyway and you don't need to explain it because everyone all ready knows. Wow I was being a little blind there thanks man.
Also how can you go from robot to popper? To be called a popper I thought you had to be able to at least pop you're arms, legs, chest and neck and to me personally you have to have allot of experience of getting down or throwing down or both! Please correct anything wrong :)
I'm confused with something that you've said. I can understand it but it clashes with what othere OG's have said. The main thing is even though it's different when you're doing the robot to music, how can it be popping? I thought popping what the action of you're muscles to the beat (with you're wrists in particular with popping correct?).
@NAZA1823 bro, bro, bro,,homie popping is the dancing robot,,,,,your way too literal,,,too black and white,,,,,tickalot is popping right after he robots,,,he is so good?
he wont leave his robot all the way,,he stays in in it to keep tha robot effect...honestly?,,,some things bro your gonna have to use discretion,,meaning if i say slow down for that speed bump?....that means slow down for the bump,,dont stay slow...you gotta work your mind so everything isnt so hard for u 2 understand.
It's really nice to see Slicks thinking on popping. I feel like alot of what you say comes from your understanding of creating your own music. Most poppers don't have that kind of background though. What made me think of this is how easily you use vacab like time signatures. Very informative clip. Totally diggin it.
oh, now i get it :) popping is dance while robot isnt dance (its just doing robot, pretending to be it). beat changes it into dance (into bottin' as a style of poppin' so it makes it poppin'). thats how i feel
what track is OG Tick-A-Lot robotting and popping to? That track is better than 70% of the stuff I hear nowadays. I miss old skool.
