Ive got the GM 350/290 HP crate motor in my 72 el camino and i want to put the Comp Cams Thumpr in her, is it possible to change the cam without pulling the motor?
i have a 305 , im wanting to change the cam, want to put a bigger cam in it , with dropping everything in the motor,, the bottom end was just rebuilt, me timing gears an chain to ,,, can i pull my old cam out an just slide the new one in ? an put the valves an push rodes back in ?
Problem with rebuilding an engine is the vehicle sits for 2 weeks. Most remans are cheaper than getting the engine rebuilt.Where I work at,call up jasper and they send out an engine and call them back to pick up the core bolted to crate.
one thing i would add is dont listen to how he tightens up the bolts at the end, find the torque spec on thoughs bolts and do it to spec otherwise you could overtighten and cause the bolts to shear, keep that in mind
nice work on the cam, im buildin up a 440 and im puttin in a cam and timing chain, but im not good with compression ratios so what would be the best way to find the right ratio?
yeah i have a 1994 caprice 9c1 do u know whats problems u think i might have i drive it back to n from the store when i park car back at home i wait 5 mins and the battery dead whats the problem
Looked like that was a flat tappet cam, how does the double roller timing gears work with it? I tried using them on my 91 silvy tbi350 and the cam would always come back in the block just a bit and the cam gear would rub against my block, so I went back to the oem timing gear set.
Does your 350 rebuild dvd cover everything to engine reinstallation? I mean do I need other dvds to finish the job? Do you cover all necessary adjustments to be able to drop it back in and drive? Thanks.
I am not sure if the 350's are the same as the 327's (I'm 15 and just started to get into workin on these motors) but I want to take the cam out of the motor.. but on my 327 there is a pully type thing that is attached to the cam rod and I can not take the timming cover off without taking this pully off and I have now clue how to take it off! It looks to have a key way on the inner part of the pull but no way I can see to remove it! Please help me if you can! Thank You! BTW you have great vids!
ok i have a 1998 Ford windstar, and the guy at the shop wants to charge me 2k to replace something behind the timming cover that is leaking a gallon of oil a day,and i told him not to do it and leave it alone,so could this be whats leaking behind my timming chain cover the front oil seal or front pan gasket???
With the engine still in vehicle and valve train intact, how much play in the slack side of the chain is acceptable? (I can only push the chain one chain-width from one side to the other...which doesn't seem very loose to me). My big concern: with the engine at TDC, found by watching a compression gauge and turning harmonic balancer clockwise, when the crank gear timing mark is at 12 o'clock the cam gear timing mark is also at 12 o'clock.
Are chevy reliable cars despite their gas? I'm looking to buy and 07 trailblazer, but one concern I have is minor rust on the engine, is this normal for a 3.5 year old SUV?
Ron after veiwing you'r video's I rebuilt a buick 231 somwhat similar G.M. it runs like a rabbit!!! I'd proudly recomend your video's. My gears in the rearend are 2:73 not mutch power comes from them at all, do you have a dvd on replacing gear ratio's? I'f not its a recomendation not mutch out there exept complicated manuals....
sheck out a rear end from a monte carlo or caprice some of them have either the 3.27 or 3.73 gears in em witch ell help you out or even check a chevy s-10
Usally i use a large chisle and tap it off from behind..you may also hit it between the teeth and make a split in the gear..it will come right off..always install new gears...good luck.rc
@ronieboy44 Hi their, I have the chevy 283 Motor. I just found out that I have a timing chain problem, the Marks are not aligned properly. I am thinking, am I supposed to put the engine on TDC on piston number one in order to take off and reposition the timing marks or it doesn't matter?
@ronieboy44 Hi their, I have a chevy 283 Motor, does the engine has to be on TDC on Piston #1 in order to take off the timing gear and reposition it. Would that be correct?
@Denkha94 no it does not because there is a dowel locating pin for the cam gear that only lines up one way. But it might help if when trying to line up timing marks on the cam gear such as +4 advance or -8 depending where you want it at. Take into account most aftermarket cams already have 4 degrees advance ground into it. Check the cam card or specs before hand.
its called a puller theres quite a fue diffrent ones out there and i wondnt recomend usein a chisel theres a good chance of damage to the crank or bearings or even cracking a main
@moneymaka775 they do make a puller to...that way you dont do any possible damage...Gota remember when bulding a motor go cheap way dont get what you want..spend some money
I am going to replace the cam in my 350 sb when you insert the cam, can by chance it not line up with the push rods and all that stuff, or can it only go in one way?
It will only go in onw way...check my ebay store for full videos..ebay search "chevy camshaft dvd"..then visit my store to see all my videos..Thanks..RC
turn the crank with the cap off and see how much the crank moves before the distributor moves...gives you the amount of slack or play if you will in the chain...it can be up to 12 degrees or so but by then its running pretty junky at idle and drags abit on take off...which you described...exact same thing in my jimmy...just needed a new chain and now i take off on go and timing is good and way better on gas now
if you are installing a new cam, or new bearings it would be wise to replace the other. I would check the oil clearance on all the journals. plastigage works good for checking to see if you have the correct bearings but use a snap gauge(t gauge) and a micrometer to get oil clearance.
Hello, I am doing a camshaft install on a 350 the camshaft went all the way in with no problem but the cam doesnt rotate its like stuck in there, wat did I do wrong? whatt do I have to do so it can rotate freely? And when a new timing gear is bought do they come with the timing dots or that has to be done seperate? Thanx in advance for any help.
Great instructions. Very good explanation, I wish there were more videos like this.
One question, where in the hell do you find a stock, brand new camshaft for a chevy? Most of the part sites I frequent only show aftermarket camshafts with increased lift etc. I don't want that, I just want a stock one for my truck rebuild but don't want to pay out the nose at the stealership.
thanks ronie, unfortunately I found out i have to replace my chain on a ford 302, I replace the internal fuel pump, that didnt work, found out it the ignition module was bad, replace that-no luck so it must be the chain right?! arragh!
Great Video! I have a 1969 427 and believe I busted the timing chain yesterday while getting on it. This will the first time I have changed a timing chain. I have already checked the distributor and it does not turn so am 90% sure it is the chain. The motor is pretty fresh rebuild maybe 2000 miles. I was doing about 90 miles per hr when it happened, big back fire and the engine shut down. Do think I damaged and valves or possibly broke the cam? Thanks again for the informational video!
does the dots line up on the compression stroke or exhaust?
paulsjunkcars 1 month ago
@paulsjunkcars they line up on the exhaust stroke of the #1 cylinder. Its companion cyllinder, #6, will be on the compression stroke

@ratrodscot yes. but most 305 heads wont take anything bigger than a .420 lift cam and keep enough clearance to not crush the valve stem seals
