In real-life however 1000Nm of torque through the rear wheels is useless, all you do is skid all over the place and if the TC is on it gets reined in anyways. Even for Jeremy Clarkson's reason as overtaking performance, you only need so much to overtake. You may as well say the 6.2L V8 is the king.

Well, due to the Mercs' huge weights, the 738 ft lbs can be of some use. True that it's a lot, but it gets put to good use.

And when you floor them, they go fast in a straight line. But if you're trying to lug a two ton Merc around corners... than that defeats the purpose.

But at speed, all of that torque is needed. The Brabus V12s have 810 ft lbs, all of which is put down-able in a straight line. And like I said, Mercs are the wrong cars to throw into bends.

Well yes but 4WD and for all the diffs to be tricked-up ones just to handle the power is necessary. The old now-defunct Supercharged 5.4L V8 would be fine for going fast in a straight line and with the TC off you could still have plenty of fun with it. Even considering their weight, the 5.4SV8 would be plenty. In fact for the sensible driver who also likes to drive, the 5.0L V8 would be enough (me included). Only issue then would be that plenty of other cars on the road could keep up.

AWD, as good as it is, adds weight, which is something an already two ton Merc doesn't need. And diffs in them are pretty damn good, as far as we know.

But the V12s are for super cruising, and you're right, the blown 5.4L is indeed a great engine, and nice and torquey. And with the better weight distribution it may handle slightly better.

But the V12s are faster on the straights, undeniabley. I see what you're saying, though.

Weight is well down on your worries when your got 1000Nm from virtually nil (and they could surely get far more from it technically). Of course any unnecessary weight should be stripped if possible but the weight of the 4WD system will be far outweighed by its benefits and it will result in a more natural power delivery as its mechanical rather than relying almost solely on the traction control (and of course the wide tyres). So for me probably the AMG models should be AWD 6.2 V8 being exception

The huge torque lets it accelerate quicker - simple fact, and yes, it's they're for the guys who want to be snotty about it all, and but the V12 because it's more expensive. And then there's the more power...

But actually the exra fuel would be minimal, it has huge amounts of low end torque and the great VE of a turbo engine - both give better econmy in any car.

I don't get this whole BMW vs. Merc argument. Both make astonishing engines which are used in supercars but they have a completely different attitude towads what they make. Mercedes does detune, but only for the purpose of class because they have various amg models running the same 6.2 liter engine. They dont want a $60,000 C63 to be faster than a $150000 CL63 amg. Both have the same engine, the Cl cranks a little upwards of 500, while the c63 stays somewhere around 450

firstly, between audi, BMW, and mercedes, the BMW is the best handling. The mercs are not as good as what they used to be and after driving a 2008 c class, i was appalled at the build quality and the overall engineering effort.

The all new mercedes is a good car but still not as well built as they used to be.

Mercedes cars from the 80's are at a much higher quality leven, Mercedes want to go to that standard again. BMW AND AUDI, are in the same level with Mercedes.
