Love the lush orchestration for this season's credits. Quite unfortunate that they ditched it in the final seasons for that new-agey, synthesized variation.
I love this theme song. Probably the best of all time! Although I never watched the series, I would now if they put in on DVD. Always a big Dallas & Knots Landing fan.
This was the most regal of the nite time dramas. "Knots" was most realistic, "Dallas" was bolder, and "Dynasty" was high suds-but this one took the the cake with the lusting among the vines and that horrible Angela, god love her!!
The epitome of glamour, elegance, and excellence in prime time programming. Television will never again be that great and sadly I feel the same for America. She truly reached the climax of her greatness by the late 1980's. It's been downhill ever since. At least we have the memories to reflect upon a better time in what was once the greatest country on Earth - in the once greatest state: California. It is an absolute CRIME how bad things have gotten since then. Golden State no more..
Bill Conti is just brilliant. Did anyone else notice that at :41, it sounds exactly like the opening of two other themes he did for television: Dynasty and the Colbys.
@CapPicard Type in: "The COLBYS: Opening Credits: Season 1" and you can hear it. The opening bars are exactly like those of Dynasty and similar to :41 seconds into the 8th season of Falcon Crest. The great Bill Conti can borrow all he wants from his own work and he does it nicely.
@CapPicard One last thing. Most people don't realize he wrote the theme from "Rocky." Type in: Bill Conti Mix and you can hear him play a beautiful rendition of "Gonna Fly Now" on the piano. It also has links to all his movie scores. He won the Oscar in 1983 for his score to "The Right Stuff." It beat out Michael Gore's AMAZING score for "Terms of Endearment."
To me this is the best and most dramatic version of the FC theme. Killing off Melissa was stupid and without any dignity due to AA's great perfomance and popularity! Looking back from these days it is a shame to see how they ruined great shows like FC, DALLAS and DYNASTY with lousy scripts!
This intro only lasted 2 episodes. in episode 3 Dana Sparks was removed and David Beecroft was placed between Ana Alicia and Kirstian Alfonso. In episode 4 Ana Alicia was removed. S8 is currently airing in the UK.
I am watching the re-runs now on CBS drama on Sky and all I can say they should have re-named it falcon past its best. Melissa exit was very poor everybody just forgot about it after the next episode. Vicki, Dan and Eric just left??? Anyways I hope its gets better before the end. Melissa would be rolling in her grave if she could see what a push over her cousin Nick was calls himself an Agretti.

I wanted to be these people so bad when I was a kid lol. I loved this show. Margaret Ladd was a hoot: "Hows tricks, mother?" And that house! So perfect. Now I have to go find the DVDs and make all my friends watch it. He he
I have to admit, as much as I prefer the visuals for season 7, this version of the theme is musically the best out of all 9 seasons. I especially like the sync up with the music and Susan Sullivan's head shot.
Thank you! I thought it was better than Dallas, it's rival. The FC characters were more diverse, eccentric, and the FC plotlines were more original. Can't find it on DVD though.
I remember those days quite well too - I most remember the CBS Friday night schedule from 1989-90. It was: 8:00 - The Bradys (a shame that show didn't last longer); 9:00 - Dallas; and of course, 10:00 - Falcon Crest (its final season)
Ok, I know I'm past needing therapy, but I so appreciate the arts. The mix on this version's theme is killer. The whole theme is gorgeous, but specifically that jingling before the falcon appears; the entire section from Ladd, to Sparks, to Chao Li Chi -- the horns!!! --to when the wine glasses clink. A masterpiece!
There just aren't enough words. I would love to meet whoever designed all this -- from the title, to this particular version of the theme, to the design of the cast shots with that rippeling effect, to the background shots.....Magnificent -- my God, the talent!!
One episode is tiltled "Dust to Dust". There's one that precedes that, though, with the stuff that happens before the fire. Can't remember the name of that one, but it should be pretty easy to find.
Stop --- this is it! The best primetime opening ever with this season. Same theme music but a slightly different mix
with the more prominent horns. Always loved that rippling effect between the cast pictures that mimicked the swirling wine;
fantastic title design....Rich and classy all the way. All the openings for this show's entire run were great except for that last year when they completely lost it. Those were the days...
I did not like Kristian Alfonso on this show. Melissa was fantastic. I enjoyed when she wrestled away FC from Angela, and then burned it down. But AA's almost immediate resurrection thereafter was ridiculous.
In the fall of 1988, Kristian Alfonso joined the cast of Falcon Crest and Peter Reckell joined the cast of Knots Landing. Quite the feat for CBS to land two of NBC daytime's biggest stars for their primetime lineup.
Kristian Alfonso was and is still a total babe. I remember watching this as a kid in the 80's and just waiting week to week to see what happened next.

but I Love patrick o' hearn's synthesized score especially when maggie drowns and dies, very scary and sad.
