  • My great great grandfather fought in this war. He saw some horrible fighting in France and when he returned home he was badly disturbed. He abandon his wife and daughter and became addicted to morphine....it is a truly sad story. War is hell.

  • Anyone interested in WWI - if ever you are St Louis, go the the WWI museum there. It is educational, fair, and made me cry. Just give it a day, we got cut short, without seeing it all, because 4 hours was not enough time before they had to close.

  • My great grandfather was in the war. he was in scotland at the time and im canadian. he was killed along with other amazing men and women who gave their lives. Lest we forget

  • This is a beautiful tribute to all warriors who went before their time. It brought tears to my eyes when I thought of all the friends I've lost in recent times. It brings to light the things we believe justify sacrifice and forces you to consider friends you take for granted more seriously. Someday those people will be gone it can happen so suddenly.

  • i nearly have to cry when i think of my great grandfather and all the victims who died in this war

he left behind four children and his wife (she died one year later)

    by the way im german

  • @GulaschMasterP , it was a very hard war, my uncle also fought in the war, but he returned back to the US. He rarely spoke of it, he was a machine gunner, so it would be understandable for him to talk about it to a bunch of kids. I did this video for all the participants, both sides, to show everyone suffers in war.

  • @fitzpado your uncle truly was a hero like every other man or woman who has ever fought in a war. we all can be proud of our ancestors because they have risked and gave their lives for us even if they fought for the wrong reason

thank you very much for making this video

  • Celtic Thunder does a version of this! Great song when they sing it! Five amazing voices melding together for the chorus, and they brought the beat down, which is so much more meaningful. Fantastic song any way you sing it!

  • i cry every time i here this song

  • why have 30 people disliked this?

  • @iheartyou4eva1234 YouTube needs to refuse those people the ability to like/dislike videos.

  • @SuperGasbomb yeah i agree

  • 8th fret on my guitar but I may be off a tad

  • I really hate people talking about "war against terror" on every single damn anti war song. Jihad is not holy, neither was the crusade. No part of the koran says that you should kill every "infidel", neither does the bible. In fact, mohammed (the islamic prophet, for those who don't know him) was an ally of the christians on the arabic peninsula.

Religion is definitly NOT the solution, it is the problem, goddamnit. And as long as people don't get this, there will be more and more "holy" wars...

  • Very impressive. It's very rarely that I've heard a version that can, in my mind, compare with the version that folk group Golden Bough did. THis one does, it's just as good, although in a different way. This one uses instrumentation to add to the mood, with full sweeping backing music to give the feel of the glory and loss of soldiering. The Golden Bough was very minimalistic, to create a slightly different tone that trended toward the hauntingness of death.

  • we are now closer than we have ever been to nuclear war

  • @epicchucknorris0071 wrong. simply wrong. and quite offtopic

  • boy were they wrong about the great war ending all wars

the treaty of Versailles angered the Germans to the point of waging WWII, after WWII the Russians wanted more of Germany but were afraid of America's power thus started the cold war, Korea and Vietnam were a result of this, after America won the cold war the force we supported that opposed soviet control in the middle east Al-Qeada attack the world trade center causing the war on terror

  • it is indeed disrespectful that there is a dislike button for this video, but what is unforgivable is that 30 have chosen to use it, shame on you

  • I've been thinking about this song alot since I saw the second season finale of Broadwalk Empire, like this if you agree

  • :( i cant even beleve we did this to each other

  • Those 30 people who disliked this have no heart. Anyway, this is the best version by far, DPK did hell of a good job. If you're interested in the WWI I recommend you reading two books: All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. If you want more, download the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles series. They are freaking awesome interpretations of the early 20th century.

  • This makes me so sad. Human nature is bloodthirsty. But we must destroy radical Islam, which wants to wage the wars to end all wars, and end all humanity-JIHAD.

  • @tigerhop thats just ignorance at its finest, do you even know what Jihad means? if you are like most Americans, id guess no

  • @nayr3195

Whoa now sir/ma'am lets not be rash as to single out Americans hmm, I'm American/Mexican and understand that a Jihad is a holy war (like a crusade) though I may be wrong. Either way humans are humans and we have our own opinions. But i see what your getting at about being disrespectful for this can be viewed as a memorial video. I'm only 19 and im i the military. And i dont support ALL the disissions (completley messed up the spelling for that) that are made

  • @Canadimexican i too am american and proud of it. jihad does not mean holy war like a crusade. it (like a lot of foreign languages) can't be translated very well but it means more of a struggle than a war. true followers of islam (meaning not radicalists such as al-quida) stress that "jihad" is a moral struggle between their faith and those who wish to destroy it. unfortunately, many take this to mean a holy war, but this is a misconception. it is meant to be a peaceful struggle.

  • @Canadimexican also good luck out there, there is no one that deserves more respect than a military man (or woman)

  • @tigerhop fuck you asshole >.>

  • @tigerhop Dude cmon man really

  • I cry everytime I hear this song, especially after going to Belgium and seeing the sheer amount of graves for myself.

  • The fact that youtube has a dislike button on this song is simply disrespectful.

  • @BlackthornVG I disagree. You Tube cannot make a decision, entry by entry for each song. And, even if they saw this one, if they decided to remove the dislike button out of respect, I would be upset.

To do so would be to silence others speaking their opinion, and that goes against what American soldiers live and die to protect.

Besides, while I liked the song and message, people are capable of writing bad music about important topics, and I have a right to dislike it.

  • SO SAD AND SUCH A GREAT SONG

  • On my funeral song list!!

  • To put a end to war, we must put a end to the bankers. For every war through out history except for a couple, it was the bankers who sounded the drums of war!

  • @303anzac leave you paranoid nonsense somewhere else, this is a video commemorating the fallen, not spreading your crackpot conspiracy theories

  • I listened to this at the grave yard overlooking Normandy beach. Not WW1, but it's something I will remember.

  • the 30 haters this song is a tribute if you dont respect this you also dont respect all the fallen soldiers

  • This is the best version of this song, and the best video of it too, imo. Well done, sir.

  • Never again war.

  • today 11/11/2011 Armistice day in France we remember them, may they all rest in peace

  • Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

  • We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

    In Flanders fields.

  • In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

  • I listen to this and watch this video every Remembrance Day. Thank You.

  • i love this

  • @cenizobelle IKR!

  • How can anyone be heartless and ignorant enough to dislike this?

  • Thankyou so much..

  • the head played this to my school i have never seen them so quiet

  • life

  • just take a moment and feel the emotinal sound of this song its so soothing and touching i dont think this song can be played any better DKM for like

  • I love this song, reminds me of my grandad RAF WW2. RIP

  • best version in my opinion.

very emotional and you really feel the loss hurtig the singer

  • @reliewztag Danke!

  • @fitzpado haste jut jemacht! shivers down my spine, what else to say. peace

  • @reliewztag You have great taste in music! Take great pride in your aryan heritage my friend! Don't ever let anyone try to make you feel guilty for being white. This version always gets me emotionally too: /watch?v=Iz62CaiCjfg

  • Why is the Dropkick Murphy's version of this song so great. RIP to the men who fought and died for the future we have today. Shame a lot of people see to forget it and take it very much for granted.

  • RIP timothy johnson 2010 arghandab afghanistan

  • @116skinnyboy RIP

  • @avgnman72 thx i felt so bad 4 him he died on his 1st wedding anniversary

  • The most beautiful song I have heard. Sums up all the feelings that I had when I went to visit the graves and trenches in France. Thank you. I WILL REMEMBER THEM and all those others who died and still die now.

  • To all the victims of 9/11 and the soldiers that continue to die.

  • WWI was not fought in vain, we must remember that the entire European continent was saved because of valiant men who stood up and fought and gave their lives to protect their homes and families.

    Beautiful song.

  • The Dropkick Murphy's nailed this song. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

  • So much focus has been given to the Greatest Generation through movies, video games, etc that most forget the horrors the Lost Generation saw. World War One was the first war where human lives clashed against the mechanization of war. . We forget those men in the trenches, living life day to day underground, at any time the sound of machine gun fire rattling. They say War never changes, but we'll never see another war like this again.

  • Always reminds me of my trip to the battlefields in France and Belgium, driving through the Belgian countryside and seeing nothing but graveyards for miles really brings home the brutality of war, I could never have comprehended just how many people lost their lives until I saw for myself the gravestones stretching off as far as the eye can see and then further still

  • i luv this song it is so sad it reminds me of one of my family members!!!!!(sniff) (sniff)sad but i still luv this song!!!!

  • @irafar1 wtf are you on about. you sound like someone who feels theyshould blow themselves up who live in the sand near isreal, not to mention the dark ages.

  • I'm moved to tears every time I listen to this song. The Dropkick Murphy's Version especially!

  • neath columns of stone also a moving song

  • This is without a doubt one of most played and favourite videos.

  • kinda makes me said, but it is important to know what happened

  • MURPHYS !

  • War is a scam only to make the New World Order conquer and steal what others have. The Insiders don't fight they just have their people do it for them. In the end look who benefited.

  • this is very moving,we shall never forget the sacrifices they made for our lives today,we will remember them always.

  • this is very moving fetched a tear to my eyes we shall never ever forget the sacrifice they made for our lives today,we shall remember them,

  • I would die for all of them, i am not worthy

  • Goddamn this song is sad. Memorial day wasn't that long ago. The last veterans of WWI are dead. We keep killing despite the end of the War To End Wars. The Great War didn't solve anything...and that saddens me the most :(

  • Happy memorial day!

  • WARS ARE SIMPLE : YOU CHOSE TO FIGHT OR YOU ARE FORCED TO FIGHT.

  • @spartan1545 War is nothing like that...

  • my history teacher played this video to my class! everybody was really touched, ive actually never seen my class that quiet <3

  • @verymccrary Thanks for the comment and pass along a thanks to your teacher for showing it.

  • @verymccrary the same happened to our GCSE class :)

  • @kezza12322 ahh cool :)

  • @verymccrary Where do you happen to go to school lol, cause my teacher did too

  • @EminemLyriczz lol sorry i dont want to put that on here. i changed schools anyway, but cool

  • @verymccrary Actually, my class is using this song as part of our Remembrance Day performance, which we're doing tomorrow.

  • @CooCooAwesome that's awesome!

  • @verymccrary my history teacher did the same thing and the exact thing happend, thank you to all who serve

  • Cool!!!

  • thanks for uploading this:(

  • The ironic is that the allied during WW1 fought for the of freedom a couple of Serbian terrorist.

But respect for all that fought in the war , my grandfathers brother was one of them.

  • The ironic is that the allied during WW1 fought for the of freedom a couple of Serbian terrorist.

But respect for all that fought and died for their country's, my grandfathers brother was one of them.

  • Comment removed

  • The suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the pain, the killing and dying, but NEVER in vain. A whole generation was butchered, but not damned. They fought as soldiers have always fought. They fought, they killed, and they died for what they believed in and for the nations they loved. Anyone who damns them for that should have been there with them and seen the glory and the honor that these men had for themselves. God bless all veterans, past, present, and future!

  • @MissouriKid88 I think the idea is that the "Great War" was going to be the last war, the one to end them all. Ninety-two years later, we can clearly see that was not the case. The young men that went to war thinking this was why they were fighting, assuming they didn't die in a trench, were going to see another terrible war within their own lifetimes. Perhaps it was not entirely in vain, but it certainly didn't accomplish what they were told it would.

  • these clowns are the best at murdering a great song altogether

  • @liamobrien06 They made the song their very own. It's pretty fucking brilliant.

  • @noguilt007 no, actually its written by a guy called eric bogle, so they haven't made this song, but hell they do the absolutely best and most touching version ever!!! :D so much feeling in the chorus when the drums and bagpipes come in, i fuckin <3 dropkick murphys!! :D

  • The last combat veteran of the Great War has departed us.

  • @parawelpe R.I.P. Briton Claude Choules aged 110. Last known WWI combatant.

  • @parawelpe Sucks but good to know.

  • Thank you so much for sharing those depressiong pictures and the beutiful music.

We can only hope, that those who decide about peace and war will see these pictures. May their eyes also fill with tears as mine do, everytime I watch this.

May luck be with you... as a soldier you will need it more than any of us.

  • Very well said izzet0guild0mage!

If only more people in this world appreciated how in particular the "Great War" was so cruel (not taking anything away from those lost in wars since). But this was just so astonishingly bad!

  • I wish I could say something that hadn't been said already about this song. It's a beautiful piece that will serve to chronicle an horrific part of human history. I've cried listening to this song more than a few times, and I wish I could be a good enough person to love everyone like I've come to love William McBride. It's a shame it takes so many lives for us to remember just how precious life is.

  • A great video to a great rendition of this song. My Great Great Uncle was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme at the age of 19...

  • at 3:45 the blind leading the blind gas attacks burned soft tissue first.

  • This songs really brings out the point that:

    One death is a tragedy,

A million deaths is a statistic.

You don't see the war until you imagine that one person, William McBride, that fought this war.

This song helps you imagine what happened to each and every one of the brave soldiers in this war.

Then, and only then, can you hear, "16 million deaths," and actually feel something.

  • Ah. I love this song. Always makes me all misty-eyed ^^

    *2 Huge Thumbs-Up*

  • my grandfather fought vimy, passendale, and the somme

  • dont zoom in all the time but great pics and great song

  • god i love this song

  • HOORAA!

  • @reodk lolwtf?

  • Thanks for posting this. I am a soldier myself and my grandfather was in WWI so this song means a lot.

  • Thank you SOO much for Posting this Vid, i had to do an history essay on ww1 and i was stumped for what to do but the images and the song although they made me cry gave me the best angle for my essay and i got an A!! thank you soo much!

greetings and hugs from england!! ^_^

  • NightmareNeko69 , I'm glad that my video was both helpful and inspirational to you. I try to show that this war, all wars in fact, are more than just dates and facts that you hear about in school. It has an effect on those who were in it (of course) and those of us who are living today. The lyrics in the song say that and I want photos to match the words. I hope I was successful in some way of reaching that goal.

    Greeting from the USA

    fitpado

  • @fitzpado you where sucsessful ^_^

  • @fitzpado R.I.P. Briton Claude Choules aged 110. Last known WWI combantant.

  • Live long. And propser.

  • The Dropkick Murphys nailed this song, it brings tears to my eyes every time. Gorgeous.

  • Why the hell do people put a thumbs down? Yes the dead see the end of war, and this song represents the lost genreation of young men that were torn down by gas and gun fire. Before you rate the video, put yourself in the place of one of the soldiers of WW1 such as a 19 year old on the frontlines. Then rate it because even though it is modern warfare today, WW1 was much more grusome and bloody than anything. It's almost like discracing veterans and the young men who fought and died in the war.

  • R.I.P:/

  • VETERANS: THANKS FOR ALL YOU'VE GIVEN.

  • still brings a tear to my eye thanks for this vid

  • Although no sculptured marble should rise to their memory, nor engraved stone bear record of their deeds, yet will their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored.

  • R.I.P fallen heroes of once. There are still some who remembers your sacrifice.

I wish there were some of your bravery in these times left.

    greetings from Germany

  • Remember all who fell for King and country...... still in our hearts! FGAU

  • Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of the horrid of war, and it reminds me that we're all lucky that we don't live in such a time

  • People who dislike the sentiment of songs like these have never had a war played out on their homeland. That pretty much excludes everyone but the USA, Iceland & Canada in the last 65 years.

  • @verbaud If your gonna comment on a song like this you really gotta get your facts straight. I'm not even gonna bother mention the countries that had a war in their back yard the last 65 years, you can go google it.

  • Really great song, it really moved me and does everytime i listen to it! I voted thumps up for it. Greetings from Sweden.

  • as good as the song is, its a shame that it even had reason to be thought of, let alone made.

R.I.P all heros of war., maybe one day we'll learn from the past and stop the wars.

  • Both of my blessed Grandfathers were in the Great War...one was from Ireland, the other from Germany. They both fought for our country....and they were both wounded.

  • The twenty eight dislikes can shove it!

  • @llJK17ll

I respect the people who fought and died which is why I am not going to let some American try to rewrite history. Yeah?

  • rip Willie from France

  • who is the artist singing the song ?

  • dont sound good with english accent. irish are best

  • @dmotors27 this is not an english accent, dropkick murphys are an american irish celtic punk band so he has an irish-american accent

  • "War is a racket"... US Marine General Smedley Butler (WWI) who was awarded two Medals of Honor by America. Indeed.

  • There's nothing that shows that nations have the ability to live in peace for wars do talking for most it's like this you have 1 coin a weaker person found a bag of them the basic human if there's no immediate repercussions he will take it wars have happened and will always will there's no other way unless we see that we shouldn't allow a bunch of moronic governments dictate that we are going to war democracy means nothing we only vote on things that don't matter which prick or party lies to us

  • I don't get why people dislike this for me this song really reminds me of the waste of war. And when ever I think a war is right because the cause is good I listen this song. and then I remember that all war is a waste. Even if the cause seems so rightfull it is still a waste war brings hate and from hate rises more hate. So every war is pointles because wars will cause new wars and it is just not worth it we must learn to live to gether in peace

  • i love this song i go down the street in the car and blast this song(: and anyine who dont like this u have problems

  • rip all who died in wars they did not want to fight

  • i just came bck from my ww1 battlefield history trip yestrday and our tour guide played this song a few times it made everyone really emotional

  • Willie McBride was not 19, he was 21. If you look up the real Willie McBride you will find the truth and his headstone that says he was 21

    RIP Willie McBride

  • @MagicalDragon2003 Artistic license. "twenty one" would hardly rhyme in the song.

  • @MagicalDragon2003

19 or 21 dosen't matter. This song ist not only about the real soldier Willie Mc Bride, it's about all soldiers. "... and it happens again and again"

  • Back when wars were brutal...as they should be. That way politicians don't enter into them lightly.

  • @Number1StarsFan

and today wars are not brutal??? Have you never seen all the tattered bodys from Iraq and Afganistan wars? It's still the same, even if the TV make it sometimes look like a video game.

  • What an awesome, powerful song.................

  • My Grandad went to France twice with The Border Regiment and was twice injured......he still went back a third time and survived, one of the lucky ones. Excellent tribute well done.

  • They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the Sun and in the morning

    We will remember them.

  • To all you euro’s don’t forget the American blood that was shed and spilled for your homes and family’s we fought harder then any one twice. And bore the pain to keep you from facing the same. We saved your ass’s twice don’t forget it. And we’d do it again at a moments notice.

  • @firearmssarge Thats true, if only the Americans don't forget the Soviets. Without cooperation from ALL sides the Germans would have won.

    Lets stay united this time!

  • @cyandk The soviets were the most worthless allies any one could have had. 1 they used American resources and money. To build an army that was used against all of Europe and Americans and they hated us for it. Sure it would have taken longer and more blood to kill Hitler but we could have and would have done it with out them. So you can say we traded one evil for a larger more powerful evil of our own creation. Humans hate each other and always will so a divided world means we will thrive.

  • @firearmssarge That is very harsh. I agree that the soviets did terrible things during and after the war. But stating that the allied could beat the Nazi, fascists and Japanese alone is very bold and a bit arrogant.

Also, I'm from Denmark and we were neutral, but also afraid of the soviets, but still grateful for what they did during the war.

  • @cyandk Ok 1 there was no allies in the pacific it was just the US 2 your family didn’t loose 4 people during the war and 2 of them were killed at a bridge by the soviets while trying to get the prisoners out of the camps before they were killed by the soviets . and so you know my family has fought in every war in Europe and every were else. And I will fight the same as them. So yes I do think I have the right to be a little harsh.

  • @firearmssarge Sorry to butt in...but, don;t you think you may have a biased opinion if your family members died at the hands of Soviets?

Also, this video IS about WW1. Not WW2.

  • @DTanza look at the other comments and with hte price my fam has paid i have more then every right to be pised at the soviets.

  • @firearmssarge The Soviet Union has been gone since 1991. Seems futile to be pissed at a government that hasn't existed for almost 20 years.

  • @DTanza ok there was a typo THE is the right word

  • @firearmssarge Don't worry, I make typos all the time.

  • @firearmssarge 1. The U.S. wasnt alone in the Pacific. Australia, England and other European nations fought in the pacific. 2. Although the soviets were pretty bad, they were NOT useless. The Germans lost around 85% of their soldiers to the soviets, the U.S. would have gotten crushed if they fought Germany by themselves.

    Great song btw

  • @firearmssarge About 25 million Russians died during WW2, without them, without that front, Europe would never have been liberated. Look up the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk.

In the Pacific, the Chinese fought, suffered greatly and were fighting long before anyone else got involved, and then the Vietnamese, Malays, Indians, British, Australians, New Zealanders, ...

And if nothing else, have some respect for those who fought and died.

  • @firearmssarge The Australian Army inflicted the first defeat against Japanese land forces during the Battle of Kokoda in Papua- New Guinea in 1942. Get your facts right before you claim that the US won the war in the Pacific all by themselves.
