@ggguzman While I admit I cannot speak for Uganda and Burundi, I just recently spent a few weeks in Rwanda and spoke in depth with a number of natives and friends of mine who have lived there for years and I feel I can say with confidence that much of the ethnic division has vanished in that country. Of course there are small pockets of hate and I'm not saying everything is hunky dorky, but I definitely take issue with labeling the place as a piece of garbage because of its past.
@middletech Rwanda today is nothing like the Rwanda of 15 years ago. They have come a long way in a very short amount of time. The backward ideals that lead to this horrible occurrence are no longer taught or believed by the people of Rwanda. It is actually one of the more progressive African nations now and their president is doing some amazing things. @standforchange08 Well there were 2600 peacekeepers in the country lead by Canadian General Roméo Dallaire who defied to withdraw when the U.N. did withdrew but they were ill-equipped with weapons, fuel, manpower, and aid to stop much of the genocide. They did save many lives but I do know General Dallaire sees his mission as a terrible failure and has said in interviews he himself if a casualty of Rwanda. Also, Clinton wasn't head of the UN. But he also didn't provide aid as president though.

@ggguzman While I admit I cannot speak for Uganda and Burundi, I just recently spent a few weeks in Rwanda and spoke in depth with a number of natives and friends of mine who have lived there for years and I feel I can say with confidence that much of the ethnic division has vanished in that country. Of course there are small pockets of hate and I'm not saying everything is hunky dorky, but I definitely take issue with labeling the place as a piece of garbage because of its past.

The backward ideals that lead to this horrible occurrence are no longer taught or believed by the people of Rwanda. It is actually one of the more progressive African nations now and their president is doing some amazing things. @kaseit You should do some reading before thinking this reinvented country is any better than before - tribalism ( a bit) but mainly colonial interference, first Belgium, then France and now UK/US has led to massive instability in the Great Lakes region. The RPF/Museveni was just as bad from 1990-1994 and only politics has stopped them facing charges . No doubt at least 400,000 people (plenty Hutu) died but the official line is no more than victor's BS justice. Kagame sucks.

I stated that I know everything in Rwanda isn't perfect; I was, however, bothered that someone was calling the country third world trash. And you can say what you like but I've seen it with my own eyes: Rwanda is not the same country it was in '94. The people love Kagame and he is doing some great things to rebuild there. The public mentality is greatly improved.

@kaseit I did. I lived there and have read widely on it. To call it third world trash is stupid and insulting. A lot of bull has been written about what happened and why. I feel that the underlying problems are still there,;their manifestation has simply moved to the DRC a few miles away (where millions have been proven to have died). They have to love Kagame, he puts any opponents in prison. There is strong evidence that his RPF committed many atrocities and are to blame as well.

I also remember reading about that document leakage last fall, but I didn't know much about when it other than it accused the RPF of atrocities. I had no idea it was a field study or when it was taken. How long and when did you live there out of curiosity? And just to clarify I wasn't calling the place trash, I was irritated that someone else would make such a judgment.

@standforchange08 Well there were 2600 peacekeepers in the country lead by Canadian General Roméo Dallaire who defied to withdraw when the U.N. did withdrew but they were ill-equipped with weapons, fuel, manpower, and aid to stop much of the genocide. They did save many lives but I do know General Dallaire sees his mission as a terrible failure and has said in interviews he himself if a casualty of Rwanda. Also, Clinton wasn't head of the UN. But he also didn't provide aid as president though.

What I'm really saying is that colonialism is responsible ultimately. It's true in former British colonies as well... look at Sri Lanka and Sudan today. I think Europe should do more to fix these problems.

The commune of Nyamata, This commune has registered 13,386 orphans . . .I don't know the number for the whole of Rwanda. . .Some survivors hav taken in orphans, as for the rest. . i don't know.

I went to dinner with a woman from Rwanda whose whole family was killed, cousins and all. She told stories of the torture that was done to the members of her family. Horrible ways of killing. She became a missionary and now helps people to forgive the ones who murdered.

And it's not so much as the hutus being bad people, they were told and pretty much brain-washed that the tutsi's were bad people and to kill them. It's is a terrible thing and death is a terrible way to go. and the first part of this comment was to elsoda. badharvz - you made a good point

Until her mother asked her,"Do you know who cut your cousins into small pieces?" She answered, "No." Her mother said,"You cannot hate everyone, for you do not know who actually did these things." Her mother explained to her that evil spirits are running through peoples bodies and creating this massacre. Hate is what starts these evil things, so we must forgive.

my personal opinion is that hotel rwanda is nothing but hollywood crap, guns and action packed kind of shit. the BEST rwanda genocide movie out there is SOMETIME IN APRIL and second, BEYOND THE GATES..those are great movies.
