Well the system should also pay attention to anyone that is shooting or attacking you. Even if they got this working there is the the bigger problem, making it work gameplay wise. The larger the numbers the more zerg like it becomes. Everyone is getting one shotted because you are being focused fired by 5 or 6 players at once. Getting one-shot is not fun which is why it is not in games now. The game becomes less about skill at more about outnumbering your opponent.
They balanced it by classing every kind of damage done. Anti tank rounds would only do good damage against tanks. Anti personell weapons would only do good damage to foot people, Anti aircraft weapons would only do good damage against aircrafts. Also, HP was high, but not insane.
In planetside, going around blowing soldiers up with rocket launchers had little effect.
I could see that working, although they would have to add a couple more ammunition types to ground human targets to cut back on the amount of damage. I guess you could also make it so everyone has huge health pools so it take tons of shots, ruins the FPS aspect somewhat though.
I play a lot of TF2, and I have done 32 vs 32 on some servers. If you have ever played on one you realize it is hard to not get hit from behind by several targets. Not matter how good you are. Unless you have large maps that spread out the population. That isn't helms deep, Having a large populations in one location makes everything feel zerg like. At least tf2 deals with it somewhat well considering the amount of weapons that deal splash damage in the game. still destroys the skill though.
well there are huge tf2 levels, just so you know tf2 already uses some of this technology to cut back on lag. I will give planetside a try to get a better idea of the game play.
It also doesnt consider that the larger the battlefields you play on the more coordinated and side units are. You think of Halo as a single unit, but think of Planetside, DAOC, Warhammer Online where the could be 50 or 100 people hitting you from one direction. Not sure if they are using the right logic for the scale of wars they are talking about.
@CinderHavoc92 Doubtful. MAG development started before this video and probably around the same time as this, so we will never know which really was first. We do know MAG was first to stores by a long shot.
Also Planetside (Sony) was a MMOFPS back in 2003, before even world of warcraft was released, with no more lag than any other fps game. So actually both probably got their inspiration from that.
If anyone here is a game developer wannabe they would see the epicness of this...plus if you read the donnybrook publication its tells us noobs how they did it
So basically, everyone you are not looking at will lag, therefore it would lag because of the people you are not looking at? I don't think this would work with 1000s but that's just what I think. Quake 3 owns by the way :D.
Thats what he said. But your forgetting one thing.
If a player that your not paying attention to is moving, you will normally see it choppy.
Look at it like this: Every time you get the information from the choppy player, he will have advanced a few meters because he is walking forward.
You could call every recieved information hits waypoints on where they are. So if the player is walking forward, there will be several information points or waypoints in his route.
At that moment the bot will start working and run through all of the waypoints or information points you left during your advance untill he reaches the point of where he stopped. This way it will look very smooth.
The only problem with this is that the bot might not be in sync with your movement.
In other words, your shooting the bot but it wont hit because the player isnt actually there, but half a meter off.
Damn, that's the first time i saw a gils talkin' about video games, that os Cute(HOT!!!) and smart(seems to know what she's askin') at the same time. WOW. I can die now.
Err...I'm not the smartest but wasn't that in-game footage Quake 3? In fact, I'm pretty sure it was -- that level Soro was on, at the end of the game...
So technically its still not a 100 players a time. Its only 4. Its a cool technique though! Might be interesting to see how this works out with a game designed for it.
It sounds like it scales true updates based on statistix and how close the character is to the screen's central vector. If 20 ppl are directly directly in front of you - closer z-values would likely get more accurate data to interpolate accross. Combining the AI with the interpolation creates the necessary illusion. To all those who say this won't work - it's already working for crying out loud -- it's just a matter of improving it.
This is a really stupid idea, the game that they were showing footage from looked if anything worse with their "Technique" I understand they there are in early stages but it would ultimately result in unrealistic gameplay, especially based on the fact that if u arent focusing on the person in ur perifs they wont be in the correct place. If you then do focus then wouldn't they just jump to the right location? and even if it worked, the shear numbers would still result in horid lag.
having more than 1000 people in 1 room isnt always good. u would probably die every second and it wouldnt be fun dieing over and over again. i think that is the reason fps have limitations on how many people can be in a game
yeah 1000 persons in 1 room is not fun. But I think that microsoft's engeniers thought of that before you said it (sarcasm master) so there will be a huge world... Damn it, I can't wait to see Halo turned into an MMO :p
LOL,xbox will never do anything other than FPS shooters in the future.People do get sick of the same genres, they should think about changing that mentality.
Its good to see her still doing video game interviews. She used to be on G4 before the whole thing went down the pisser. All the good reporters were canned when G4 was bought out.

Comments already state see Planetside. I have vids on my profile that show that game.
This video is not very impressive, it talks only of how they plan to smooth animation. No talk of hit detection and how they deal with players playing over large distances. Like me playing from UK against somebody in Australia.
This video is really of no significance in my opinion. Just proves Microsoft is much better at marketting. (I've never seen a sony video discussing this!)
this is not a good concept. for example the hdr example: if there are like 123123213 archers and me playing a archer too... it will be quite boring. i'll feel like my actions have no influence on the whole battle.
The difference is that this will be a toolset so ANY developer can make MMOFPS games. Sony published Planetside, but didn't use any of that tech for games like Resistance or Warhawk. Each game developed their own technologies. This solution can be applied by any game.
In this clip the netcode looks worse than the one in Planetside which actualy is a MMOFPS that was launched 4 years ago. You just reinvented the wheel, congratulations.
wow for once a female presenter that isnt a bimbo!, right on for her she rocks!. interesting idea though, it would need to be more than 5 players id have imagined :S not sure this will work tbh
This wouldn't work in Helm's Deep. Heuristics couldn't keep up with the chaos of battle, as new rules would be written Besides, the person yhou just "paid attention to" would be dead anyway. We just all need FIOS connections directly to our brains + only 2 feet from each other.
399 players has been done on one server, some serious frame drops and warp, but it was Planetside, that just has a crap game engine with worse warping than AvP2, so thats expected, 400 players has been done as an FPS.
However this is sounds retarded, if you have a bad ping rate you could die on someones screen and not know for a time and you could get serious warp deaths, I don't think it would work tbh...

I'm talking about an MMO, not some close up FPS game. Planetside was HUGE. There were multiple worlds, which were huge just by itself.
HawK047 1 year ago
well there are huge tf2 levels, just so you know tf2 already uses some of this technology to cut back on lag. I will give planetside a try to get a better idea of the game play.
tddavis 1 year ago
@tddavis TF2's levels are very tiny in comparison to Planetsides. I'm talking about WoW scale maps that can take thousands of players at once.
And every weapon had a distinctive use for something. Use a weapon against the wrong target and you wouldnt do alot of damage.
Plus, dont bother. Planetside died when Sony brought out patches that destroyed the community.
HawK047 1 year ago
yes the official maps are tiny, I was referring to modded levels, ones you could get lost on because they were so huge.
to bad i can't try it, the weapon system sort of reminds me of EvE a little bit so I can get an idea that way.
