I lived in Uptown in the early 80s before Calhoun Square. There was less traffic congestion, and the McDonalds at Lagoon and Hennepin, which they don't show in this vid, was the local neighborhood meeting place. Uptown in 1980 was a throwback to the 60s and bringing in Calhoun Square brought about the eviction of many artists and interesting people who lived above the shops on Hennepin where Calhoun Square is now. It looks like Uptown has continued to grow and now is over populated and upscale.
Okay what exactly is "Minnesota Nice"? I'm hazy on the definition. I take it to mean "nice, polite, and helpful but not up in your business." Is that accurate to say? I guess it depends what your definition of friendly is. That definition is friendly to me, because I'm the same way.

Uptown is ok. It isn't as nice as other gentrified areas or yuppy areas in other big cities in the US. It has nothing on some of the Northside neighborhoods of Chicago for an example in the Midwest.

You should have seen Uptown in the 80s. Golden days. So many young people. Baby boomers everywhere. I grew up there. The 70s were still families mixed with head shops and hippies. 80's were a mix of everything from punkers, rockers and higher-end (Prince) glamour types. 90's started to slide a bit. Now, it's still nice, but there just aren't as many young people. The edge has been taken off the vibe of the place. I still visit. Always fun to go back.

I can believe that. I'm from Dallas, Texas and it gets very cold there in the winter, sometimes down to zero. Here in CT, I've seen it get to -10 and that's okay even in short sleeves if there is no wind. Minnesota gets colder than much of Alaska, so I imagine that only a native, a Canadian, or a Russian could bear that type of winter.

Uptown is great - though there is the very real danger of it becoming too gentrified. Building normal housing would have been a far better move than the condos that are going up on Lake Street.

Was there for 11 years. If you've seen Fargo, the creators are from that area, and you run into a lot of that weird sh?t in Minnesota that Fargo shows. The locals like to say they are nice, but there are plenty of folks from out of town that tend to be a lot more fun to get to know. After a few years a realized the local Minnesotans were a little off. Try to avoid the druggies if you can.
I grew up in the uptown neighborhood, and yip, there weren't that many kids to play with. But the one thing that comes to my mind when I think about uptown is the 'punk rockers'. That is so true!
I lived in uptown for 11 years, left in 2001. When I lived there, uptown was s cesspool of drugs. You can easily get any drug you want/need without looking too hard, anywhere in uptown, at the bars mostly, like Lyle's and the CC club.
The seasons but mostly winter....diverse in terms of professions, but not cultures...(at least not as diverse as NYC) But its true that the people are REALLY REALLY nice...

I can believe that. I'm from Dallas, Texas and it gets very cold there in the winter, sometimes down to zero. Here in CT, I've seen it get to -10 and that's okay even in short sleeves if there is no wind. Minnesota gets colder than much of Alaska, so I imagine that only a native, a Canadian, or a Russian could bear that type of winter.

MN SUCKS!!!! i lived in Uptown near lake Calhoun, 'cause i thought it would be fun, but it wasnt. Then i decided to move to St Paul but it was too ghetto and there was nothing to do, i now live in Woodbury and is boring as hell, but at least its safe. People here are just not fun. Chicago is one of the BEST cities to live in, I LOVE IT and i wish i could move back

True I seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's with steve winwood in Minneapolis.I like going to the met to go watch the twins,I also like hennepin avenue because of the music scene with all the bands,valley fair,Mall of America.The twin cities have it all.

Uptown is great - though there is the very real danger of it becoming too gentrified. Building normal housing would have been a far better move than the condos that are going up on Lake Street.

Yeah Uptown! I lived there for 5 years on Humboldt and Lagoon...I miss being close to the Greenway. But it was kinda noisy there that was the biggest drawback...and an occasional inner city scum would show up at my door hitting me up for some bogus donation BS...

okay so i just moved to uptown from sunny southern cali and let me tell you its no city at all... If you don't like to spend your whole paycheck on booze and designer clothes there is no scene at all... the people pretend to be nice but shut you out of their daily lives. friends don't come easy and i'm paying just as much in rent for a studio apt here as i was in hollyhood. the music scene is nothing but crunchy folky emo shit other than extreme noise & a few punks. O yea its -35 in winter too

Was there for 11 years. If you've seen Fargo, the creators are from that area, and you run into a lot of that weird sh?t in Minnesota that Fargo shows. The locals like to say they are nice, but there are plenty of folks from out of town that tend to be a lot more fun to get to know. After a few years a realized the local Minnesotans were a little off. Try to avoid the druggies if you can.

I lived in uptown for 11 years, left in 2001. When I lived there, uptown was s cesspool of drugs. You can easily get any drug you want/need without looking too hard, anywhere in uptown, at the bars mostly, like Lyle's and the CC club.
