Thanks for uploading this video! It's so interesting to see that instinct. I had a Sheltie also (I live in the suburbs) who never saw a sheep in her life... but she still had that herding instinct! She would get really upset if one person broke off from the crowd. It's so cool to see the real deal...thanks again!
By the way that Donday's mother is a cow. I hate meeting people like that in real life.
It is not an all start herding day, and I pushed him too long, and did not call him off before he quit, which I should have, but it was nice. I have been waiting for the rain to stop for the last 2 months to get a new video - he is much more confident, and a lot of fun. I think I am going to try to enter him at the Sheltie National trial this year.
What the hell is donday08 talking about. What does he or she expect of a herding dog? "Woof, sheep no. 3 move in line, woof come now co-operate!" I thought this dog did great. Donday08 sheltieb' is right stop embarrassing yourself!
You should watch some scottish sheep dog trailing then you would be ashamed of your-selfs. Dogs like that would be shot for sheep worrying over here. Our sheep are also shown more respect. But dont feel that i am picking on you i have seen alot of shetland sheep dogs doing what yours does and have also told them how rubbish they were. Either the herding instict has been bred out of these dogs or the handlers dont have a clue. Put your self in the sheeps place not pretty. This is my sons account
I am very familiar with Scottish Sheepdog trials, and Border Collies in general. Son, please tell your mother where her ignorance shines true is that Shetland Sheepdogs were not breed to herd like Border Collies, they have their own style and use around the farm. She might not want to use your account if she can't be more mature about it, and at least research before she decides to share her vast "knowledge" with the world. Tell your mom to get her own account, quit embarrassing you.
FYI, self important know it all people always amuse me : ) Shelties are NOT Border Collies. They were developed for much closer work, & for sometimes moving animals about *among* others things - they were all around farm dogs, alert dogs, and were very adept at when knowing anything was out of place or out of the ordinary. I *know* the history of my breed. The person who own the sheep in this video successfully trials Border Collies and Shelties, in several venues.
Thank you also for your concern about my feeling possibly being bruised. I never worry about ignorant people expressing their opinion. I have seen several Scottish Sheepdog trials, they most notably lacked SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS in their entries. Shelties were not developed to work the way Border Collies do. I am ok with that, but apparently you are not. Good thing he is my dog, and he has come along way since then - even if he did not, he is my heart dog ANYWAY.
I liked to see Drew run past the border collie to go out with the sheep. He appears to have the instinct. Some have it, some don't. I had a female, Heidi. The local children loved to pretend they were sheep, while she herded them. They'd scatter for hundreds of feet and Heidi herded them into a tight circle. Fun to participate and fun to watch.
That Border Collie is awesome, and has many titles in various organizations. He was there to "keep the peace" and make sure everything ran well : ) He was doing his job, making sure everything ran well :)

I just find it so amazing that they know what to do without ever having done it before. My shelties herd my mom's cats, haha. :) Great video.
