  • i want an octabass

  • Rock n Roll was an African American thing first. Blues and Jazz. Chuck Berry, Little Richard and others way before. Same thing with Hip Hop. Soon there will be a generation dominated by white rappers who will say "black guys used to rap?" Similar to break dancing now and days. It's on fire in Europe. Here in the states, it's not as popular as it was in the 80's with the black culture.

  • @Arch777Angel so what they're just niggers.

  • 3:00 The guitar is an African instrument? Did he just say that?

I mean, you know, I'm not an expert on the history of plucked instruments, there are lots of them, but the BANJO is an invention by African-American slaves from what I know... the guitar has been around in the West at LEAST since the Baroque period..

  • @twooffour Wasn't the guitar originally a Spanish instrument?

  • @TenTonHorse

Not sure. But it certainly was all over Europe by the 17th century.

  • You want an example of Metal meets Classical? Check out One Winged Angel.

  • what is the Bach music at 1:30?

  • @Sage80 I´m asking the same

  • @Sage80 prelude and fugue in a minor bwv 543

  • appart from hating metal, may i suggest that the connections between metal and classical are not as strong and direct as is generally believed?

  • Metal is inferior to classical music.

  • @CuriosityRoads why are you trolling in metal and classical videos?

  • @CuriosityRoads of course. but theinfluence is undeniable.

  • good doc, nice upload

  • Yeah cathedral is great but Eddy PLEASE new shit...NOW PLEASE!!!

  • can someone tell me the classical song in the beggining with richard wanger?

  • of course i can't prove this, it's just what i've seen and experienced.

And i never assumed you were 'uneducated', i was simply questioning what you knew of the arts, that's all.

As for being nervous, welcome to my world ;-) I'm the king of anxiety. self proclaimed of course ;-)

  • @lamentate07

There's no denying Dumitrescu and Scelsi are/were artists of the highest kind(I'd reccomend also Penderecki here). I see that you are very much into sonorism and microtonal music - I love it too(as I've had lots of musical ideas which turned out to be a major part of these types of music), but aren't you getting too much close-minded about it?

  • I, for example, appreciate lots of genres, each for its own purpose - as for me, good art has its own purpose, which it serves and fullfills. E. g. evoking a sense of fear or anxiety, singing a hymn about heroic deeds, creating an instrumental piece for the pleasure of a listening ear or just giving an energy injection, they all can be these purposes. My "first" music was something around classical and orchestral, later I found out about metal, which became my "main' music.

  • I'd have to write a whole essay to express all my thoughts on music, but that's not necessary and practically not even possible, but there are some things that come to my mind instantly. Like the heaviness metal can add to differrent forms of music(I love combining differrent things - and metal is something you can blend with any other kind of music). The intensity of double bass drumming, or the diversity of sounds an electric guitar can create, that's just a little part.

  • Let's not forget that a music genre is not limited by its current leading artists - any music genre can get as complex as any other, it just needs the right people. I have a vision of my own metal band, but we'll see if life is going to be favourable for my plans.

  • Anyway, metal bands/projects that create good music in my opinion include for example Arcturus(quite a lot to write about), Necrophagist or Spastic Ink(for technical proficiency), Virgin Black(collaboration with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and choir, plus some lyrics are truly deep and not obvious. If we talk about lyrics, I'd give a vote for Crimson Moonlight or even Cradle of Filth(in some areas)as well.

Ouch, I've already written 5 comments. That's probably too much, haha.

  • @Gandalf930 depends. folk metal generally sounds pretty awful to my ears. Classical and metal is OK, but it's a mixed bag. Only Septic Flesh have combined the two well recently imo. Overall it sounds pretty superficial to my ears, but it's entertaining, as is the case with bands like Bal Sagoth, COF etc.

I love Arcturus too, well at least the first 3 albums anyway, but i can take or leave the rest you mentioned except for maybe Virgin Black, who are one of the few good Aussie metal bands now.

  • @Gandalf930 no, im speaking in general. To me bands like Agalloch and Opeth are not sophisticated compared to the great art music out there. Metal lyrics are generally simple and cliched, even in underground metal. Poor and obvious use of metaphor and allegory.

I used to think metal was 'sophisticated' in my teens and early 20's. Not anymore. Guess studying philosophy and the arts changed that.

i suggest you read more widely.

  • @lamentate07

First, I did not mention Opeth nor Agalloch as I do not listen to these bands, thus I do not have an opinion on them.

So far I've heard from you just a bunch of general opinions without any justification based on actual examples. I am very curious about what you actually call "great art music", then I could say anything.

  • Plus, if you actually studied philosophy, you should then know that argumentum ad verecundiam is one of the most basic logical fallacies. The fact of having studied philosophy(if you really did, pretty much anyone can say that on the Internet) does not make you automatically right. In fact, I have had discussions with philosophy students before, I am not that uneducated as you might think I might be.

  • @Gandalf930

There's one more fallacy I forgot about in your comment - the so-called statement of conversion.

PS. please forgive my somewhat aggressive words - I am currently having bad days thus I am increasingly nervous.

  • @Gandalf930 You make some good points, except this is the internet, not an academic journal, and plenty of philosophy does not hold up when critical thinking 101 is applied. One man's 'heuristic aid' is another man's generalisation.

I'm not saying it makes me 'right'. All i'm saying is that studying the arts closely changed my opinion of metal. of where it stands in relation to other 'art forms'. I think metal fans in general have a poor understanding of what makes other art forms great.

  • @Gandalf930 great art music=Dumitrescu 'Iancu', Scelsi 'Aion, Pfhat, Konx-Om-Pax(', basically artists like that.

  • the difference between classical music and heavy rock, is that classical music still has some place left for the un-noisy tunes.

  • I went to Iron Maiden a few months ago... best concert I have ever been to... Besides Amon Amarth.

  • does anyone know the piece eddie took and the other piece before that

  • blues were inspired by classical, when you see the bands just before blues clues youll see, somebody got early immagrant songs in hq, mix jungle n vickings you get blue

  • actually the banjo is an African instrument

  • 1:07 - 1:17 sounds like the intro to "ride the lightning"

  • @Anarchist711

yeah it kind of does. wow.

  • There is a very obvious reason why metal is not taken seriously by the cultural elite, but if you have no idea what's happening in the art music world, it will never compute.

I love metal, but it's not high art and it never will be.

  • @lamentate07 why shouldn't it be taken seriously as art?

  • @MrOdsplut because it lacks the subtlety and sophistication of good art.

Although having said that, neither of those qualities are necessary for art nowadays, so perhaps metal does quality, but it's not taken seriously in the art world.

  • @lamentate07 but what's instrinsically good about subtelty and sophistication? Although it might be less complex, if something simple and entertaining is as enjoyable as something complex, subtle and sophisticated, then surely it is just as good as a work of art? Really what I think this comes down to is what function art has other than to entertain - because if its function is solely entertainment, then rock n' roll is artistically just as good as anything.

  • @MrOdsplut I'm not sure it's only because metal is 'less complex'. A lot of metal is certainly more instrumentally 'complicated' than a lot of what passes for modern 'art music'.

I disagree that the function of art is purely entertainment. That might be true of the 'lower arts', but it is not the traditional function of art, of which the role is to stimulate _and_ inform. Create a space for contemplation etc.

Anyway, each to their own. I do like metal. Been listening to it for decades.

  • @lamentate07

What I've just read, "metal lacks the subtlety and sophistication of good art"? Gosh, you are such an IGNORANT. I bet you think that Slipknot or Led Zeppelin are the most metal bands out there, right? There's more than numetal and heavy metal in the metal realm. Especially black/death/doom/progressive/neoclassical/avant-garde. And well, even apart from the music itself, metal tend to have the most intelligent lyrics in music overally.

  • You are the dumbest fucking ignoramus I have ever head of. Rock and Roll started out in America with Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, who, surprise surprise, were influenced by the blues. I don't see why this would demoralize anyone. Take your stupid fucking pride and shove up your ass, you skirt wearing savage.

  • im sorry kayne west if the voice of you "your generation"

go suck some more cocks and listen to more rap...

  • 'the guitar is an african instrument'

    yeah right looool

  • jazz was a major influence on the early days of metal, and that was an entirely American construct. LOL at the dumbass from Lamb Of God, he is such an industry pawn

  • but who about the argument that the guitar is actually an african instrument???

  • This is such a great video! Thanks for posting it! I've been sharing it with people because it's so important to know that heavy metal DOES incompass so many styles.
