If you're not familiar with the "noise abatement" takeoff and the airline doesn't bother to explain it ahead of time...It can freak you out for sure! Southwest is usually cool that way but all others I've flown have let you "figure it out" by yourself. A.K.A. Full throttle, straight up, shut engines off.......(or so it seems) FUN! (after the first time, it actually is, though)
On operations from runway 19R a steep climb is required to allow for a power reduction at about 500–700 feet for a quieter overflight over the city of Newport Beach. For 19R departures a left turn after departure to 175 degrees allows for a passage over Newport Beach within the confines of the noise abatement profile.
@travelsonic I was recently on a southwest flight and the flight attendant told me that this city has some type of noise ordinance and the airport complies by killing their engine shortly after take off. I'm not sure exactly what she meant by almost vertical take off and killing the engines but I would have died in that flight if they did that to me
@travelsonic im guessing air traffic control had them flying level at 2:50 instead of climbing and at their altitude they can't exceed 250 knots so they really had to pull back power to keep under that speed
GREAT video!! Do you work for US Airways? I work for US Airways, currently based at SNA (but on a medical leave.) According to my experience, the CRJ-900 is a poor aircraft to send to SNA due to its performance from the short runway (5701 feet long). When the weather is nice and the plane is booked full, we usually have to pull off about 5 passengers. When it rains and it's booked full, it's not unusual to have to pull of 15-20 passengers. I like your video though!!
Another 5-10 seconds on that recording and you would have found where I reside. Excellent video, sure beats my camera. DUUKE2 RNAV is a thriller on its own.
power reduction at 2:52 initial Rotation and climb level off reached, safe speed attained, Dip 'er over and clean up....why race the engine's, overspeed, and burn excess fuel. (love that part!) very nice Vid!
It's interesting that the engine cutback on this smaller plane is so much later than the 737/757/319/320 planes that take-off from SNA all day long. The larger planes seem to mostly all cutback around the 1:58 mark of this video, (As I said in another comment, my house is bottom center at 2:05), but it sounds like this on didn't cutback until about 2:50. I guess the smaller jets are quieter and can get under the noise thresholds.
This is hands down, the best takeoff from John Wayne on youtube. Stunning quality, stunning sound, stunning scenery, and stunning videographer! What seat did you sit in, because I'm going on a US Airways crj900 soon out of John Wayne and I would love to sit in that seat. Keep up the great work!
Awesome quality again! At 3:00 the plane sounds like it's at idle! But then they couldn't climb. It also doesn't sound like they cut the engine power as fast as in other SNA take off videos I've seen, but maybe the CRJ-900 is a much quieter aircraft.
