Quit comparing her to anyone and take her for what she is. LISTEN to her lyrics. Empower yourselves people! Realize that us TOGETHER can make greater changes than all of our gov'ts spending combined. People above profits!!!! That's kind of the message of the song. Listen for your own good and for MIA. Peace.
you hear her songs at first and it's like...meh and then suddenly they're really catchy and next thing you know you're downloading the album and then complete manic obsession takes over.
WTF this album is way way ahead of what anybody is doing ...... when i first heard it i didn't get it i thought it was just a UK thing but 6 years later im in awe ......... its like stuff that was done in 08.....and MAYA too is ahead of what any wack artist is doing today.

It's crazy how she still has haters! She is one of the realist artists I have ever heard in my lifeeeeee ! She raps/sings (fkn amazingly by the way!) about real shit, not money, sex, drugs, alcohol, and partying. Nicki the best female in the game? WTF she is one of the fakest bitchest I've ever seeeeeen, walkin around with fake boobs and a biggo fake butt "rapping" about barbies and shit? M.I.A. is naturally beautiful and it pisses me off how people praise Nicki and Lady Caca..
This is the Bad Bitch From Sri Lanka that Nicki Minja is jocking! Nicki needs to take notes!!! I LOVE MIA she is one of the best & realest rappers out here now!
@squirrelsinmykoolaid Yah she's talkin bout hookers sucking on lollipops and clockin them taxi meters. Stop fucking ur co_workers. Try Strip clubs, they'RE LESS SKECYHY. lol!
M.I.a. Is one of the realist rappers, she talks about real situations not about how much money she gets or all that other bs. Stop harpin on her if you don't like it don't listen to her. Simple as that :)
I believe the song is about a girl who doesn't have much, getting what she wants by having sex and or just taking advantage of older rich men who find her attractive.
@rosemarywalton17 it's on one of the virgin mobile commercials where they have a huge ass party in the backyard with the trampoline and cheerleaders and shit.
@Jacquelyn104 Not sure if it's about child prostitution... It sounds to me it's about a "man eater" who knows how to use her feminine wiles to get men to do what she wants.
@SCordeliaB "F*** gold she was a platinum digger... Found herself a yorkshire banker..."
"Lolita was a man eater, clocked him like a taxi meter" sounds more like she's taking advantage of the the guy rather than him taking advantage of her suggesting gold digger rather than child prostitute...
@bluemarsss Hey, she was doing what she had to do to get a visa and get out of a situation of poverty where there was no other options. just real all the lyrics including the tamil part in the beggining. its not explicit but its certainly implied. i dunno if you listen to M.I.A at all, but her music generally deals with the experience of people in the "3rd world"
@SCordeliaB I understand that she's doing what she can to get out of poverty. I'm just saying the song is not implying that she is a true prostitute who explicitly sells sex for money. In the song she's taking advantage of men and using sex to get what she wants / needs. She's a gold digger not a prostitute.
@bluemarsss You make an interesting point. I think we're arguing semantics though. Its a young girl doing what she has to do to get out of an impoverished situation. But you're right, by definition shes not necessarily a "child prostitute", though I would argue that gold digger is kinda too casual a term for what shes doing. a gold digger to me is like a video hoe, but child prostitute may be too harsh of a term too. hmmm

@SCordeliaB Usually when I think child prostitute I think exploitation... There's nothing in this song about the girl being exploited. I mean she's going to the shop, finds she doesn't have enough, sucks on a lollipop and then gets the guy to give her anything she wants for 10 dollars... It's possible she had sex with him but it's not a given by any means. Even if she had it sounds like she's the one doing the exploitation...
@bluemarsss It's derived from a jump rope rhyme rhyme from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The foreign language in the first half is singing the same thing in Tamil, which is he native tongue. Ma says she used to sing it when she was a kid, so it's from at least the 40's. M.I.A. Just decided to darken it and make it a catchy song at the same time.
i just loved this song but when i found out what the lyrics really mean i loved even more! It's amazing how she takes serious situations and make them into such amazing hits :)
This song is great. Fuck pierolivier111. Rappers can rap about whatever they want. They're not just gonna look on YouTube and read comments on peoples opinions about their song and just not rap about it. So just save you breath and calm down and enjoy today's society.
pierolivier111 is a dumb motherfucker....whats sick about bringing awareness of the world problem of child prostitution in a song...artists have been bringingawareness of social problems in song for decades....shut the fuck up, you fucking idiot!
oh my the arguments below on that livier's part YOU ARE SOUNDING KINDOF UM... NON SENSICAL. PROSTITUTION IS A PROBLEM THAT WILL NEVER BE FIXED ANYWHERE BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE AREN'T WANTED,SOME RUNAWAY BECAUSE THEY FEEL UNWANTED, IN 24-48 HRS THEY ARE FED AND DRUGGED UP. ONE THING THE MEN IN THE SUITS WILL ALWAYS WANT IS SEX.
i think she allow the virgin commercial because diplo had the blackberry commercial going on and it seemed to me like a fuck you i'll get a commercial and use my older tracks and make as much if not more money than diplo.......cuz i seen the virgin commercial more than diplo's!!!
@spicypillow Oh yeah, and I bet that all those rappers with those chicks and big cars in their clip are just claiming for responsability. What would you think that her, only because you like her, is different. You are wrong. She's not talking about it as a problem. She's talking about it as something normal and usuall. And I pretty sure that you are not doing anything better than me to fix the problem than listening to rap, so shut up.
@pierolivier111 You don't have to be to see that she's talking about it as a problem, I'm not. For girls in some countries, this lifestyle and future IS normal, which is precisely what the problem is. So why shouldn't she talk about in a casual tone? That doesn't mean she's encouraging it. At least I'm not so near-sighted that I would blame the singer for daring to comment on a serious social issue.
@spicypillow You first point was that I would ignore the problem instead of fixing and now you are saying that she's not talking about it like it was a problem. And then after you are saying that she's commenting it. I think you need to revise your argumentation. Or maybe I could sing you a song about doing argumentation in the right way... that will help you.
@pierolivier111 Wow. A person can't make more than one point? First, I never said she wasn't using the song to present a problem. I had a typo in my last post. It should've read "you don't have to be a fan to see..." Second, I think you should revise your vocabulary, because "comment on" is another way to say "talk about." Third, since you can't even read well enough to understand my point, I don't think I would get much out of your song.
@pierolivier111 The song is highlighting the problem of child prostitution/human trafficking. Her tone and lyrics are casual to mirror how commonplace this lifestyle is in some countries and to illicit a reaction from the listener. It's a stylistic decision. She shouldn't have to hit the listener over the head with the message, because most people should clever enough to be able to pick up on what she's trying to convey. Obviously, that isn't the case for you.
@pierolivier111 That doesn't mean she can't talk about a subject as a problem. Seriously? That doesn't mean she can't have a message. I never said she was an activist. We were talking about whether she was talking about the subject as a problem, not whether she's an activist or not. All of my previous comments have to do with the song and her goal with the music, not what she's doing in real life. Her being an activist has no bearing on the validity of my point whatsoever.

This song is great. Fuck pierolivier111. Rappers can rap about whatever they want. They're not just gonna look on YouTube and read comments on peoples opinions about their song and just not rap about it. So just save you breath and calm down and enjoy today's society.

oh my the arguments below on that livier's part YOU ARE SOUNDING KINDOF UM...

@spicypillow Oh yeah, and I bet that all those rappers with those chicks and big cars in their clip are just claiming for responsability. What would you think that her, only because you like her, is different. You are wrong. She's not talking about it as a problem. She's talking about it as something normal and usuall. And I pretty sure that you are not doing anything better than me to fix the problem than listening to rap, so shut up.
pierolivier111 1 year ago
@pierolivier111 You don't have to be to see that she's talking about it as a problem, I'm not. For girls in some countries, this lifestyle and future IS normal, which is precisely what the problem is. So why shouldn't she talk about in a casual tone? That doesn't mean she's encouraging it. At least I'm not so near-sighted that I would blame the singer for daring to comment on a serious social issue.
spicypillow 1 year ago
@spicypillow You first point was that I would ignore the problem instead of fixing and now you are saying that she's not talking about it like it was a problem. And then after you are saying that she's commenting it. I think you need to revise your argumentation. Or maybe I could sing you a song about doing argumentation in the right way... that will help you.
pierolivier111 1 year ago
@pierolivier111 Wow. A person can't make more than one point? First, I never said she wasn't using the song to present a problem. I had a typo in my last post. It should've read "you don't have to be a fan to see..." Second, I think you should revise your vocabulary, because "comment on" is another way to say "talk about." Third, since you can't even read well enough to understand my point, I don't think I would get much out of your song.
spicypillow 1 year ago
@pierolivier111 The song is highlighting the problem of child prostitution/human trafficking. Her tone and lyrics are casual to mirror how commonplace this lifestyle is in some countries and to illicit a reaction from the listener. It's a stylistic decision. She shouldn't have to hit the listener over the head with the message, because most people should clever enough to be able to pick up on what she's trying to convey. Obviously, that isn't the case for you.
spicypillow 1 year ago
@spicypillow She's not an activist or a humanist, she's a rapper. Don't you see it. Are you that blind?
pierolivier111 1 year ago
@pierolivier111 That doesn't mean she can't talk about a subject as a problem. Seriously? That doesn't mean she can't have a message. I never said she was an activist. We were talking about whether she was talking about the subject as a problem, not whether she's an activist or not. All of my previous comments have to do with the song and her goal with the music, not what she's doing in real life. Her being an activist has no bearing on the validity of my point whatsoever.
