I saw his son Nathan perform a two hour set of all Stan tunes last night, and it changed my life. This building (Rebecca Cohn in Halifax) was his favorite place to play, and I grew up hearing this wishing I was alive to have been there. Last night, Nathan granted me a two decade long impossible dream. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. If you haven't already, definitely check Nathan's covers of Stan and his original music out, he's just as talented.
I think I'm going to go around and start "disliking" some of his videos. I don't think I've seen one video with a single dislike on it. I don't know what that's saying, other than I don't think haters just seek out Stan Rogers songs. Or is he really that damn good? I like to think of it as the latter.
Most amazing and disappointing day I think I can remember in finding great music was when I first discovered Stan Rogers... Amazed at what I heard and disappointed about the hand that life dealt him and his fans....
What a beautiful song and a fantastic voice. Such a tragedy that he was taken so early - one can only imagine what else he would have written and sung. His voice is so mellow and the words so meaningful.
I must have seen Stan a dozen times in Philadelphia, mostly when he sang at the Cheery Tree or aboard the Gazela. Last time he sang "Mary Ellen Carter" and said he hoped we'd never need that song. Next I heard, he was gone.
For 23 years, I could not talk to her because she would know how I felt, and I was married to another, one night I asked where her significant other was and she said she did not have one. I knew that she was "twice a wife" and now find out she was through with life, but that was 13 years ago, just 32 more years to go.
real music, raw tallent, emotion and love goes into every song he sings and it's so hard not to just close your eyes and listen to the beautiful stories he's telling...his music will always live in my hear
This is my most favorite song from Stan Rogers; a true pure soul who left this world so early. I'd love to have this as my song for the first dance at my wedding. Who wouldn't want to see the face of the person you love 45 years from now?
Had never known this man had lived until half an hour ago. Then I got a link to this video. And then found another 45min video about his life. So I found the singer I like most 27 years after his death - unbelievable... Anyone knows whether his albums are still sold somewhere?
When I first heard this live from Rogers I wasn't even twenty-three, so thinking about being married that long wasn't even related to reality. Now looking back so far to when Stan was with us, and back just a little at 45, there is a different color to the meaning.
Stan Rogers and Two Gallants have the greatest songs I've ever heard. These songs have meaning. While my friends listen to rap or heavy metal. I'd rather listen to this. Amazing,
@Skuuurj 'Half of a Heart' is on From Fresh Water. I haven't seen it online, but I have to say that From Fresh Water contains almost all of my favorites of his songs, and it's truly worth buying the entire album. Although I think it might be backordered right now, I know Fogarty's Cove is backordered on their website.
Just think what he would be doing today! He did more to give us all a sense of identity and purpose than anyone in recent memory. The world is a worse place because of his passing.
Stan Rogers will never be forgotten. It is a lyrical journey into rural Canadian life and he executed it with so much sensitivity and never failed to make it real. His legacy will always live. I remember that plane burning on that Cincinnati runway. It still rocks me to my core.
it is only thanks to being able to hear Stan and Garnets music - found them both by accident on you tube and have bought many of their cd's since. Long may strangers be able to find these two great singers and appreciate their wonderful music
Yes so true. And yet it is that very fact that gives his music a very interesting feel to the educated listener. The sad songs feel more emotional, and the bright ones even more glowing. Incidentally, I've written a song in light of this nature, so look for is soon.
I was fortunate to hear Stan for the first time in an intimate coffee shop. He was almost close enough to touch as I was sitting just left of his small stage. He sang this song and a female friend I was with softly sang along with him, harmonizing. I have loved his music ever since and have never forgotten that moment.
I truly envy you. I didn't discover him until about eight or nine years ago as I was rummaging around my dad's CD collection I looking for the artist that had played a song that my dad had played a month or two before, which for some reason I suddenly remembered at the time (the song was Barret's Privateers, BTW), Sadly, I was born in 1983, so I never had the chance to hear him live.
I play this song to my wife I love her more than anything in this world

In my opinion probably Canada's most genuine musical talent. The real thing, no recording industry mass-produced junk here, eh.

one of the finest love songs ever. I gave Stan a lift once at the first edmonton folk Festival. Such a nice guy.

I miss this guy every time I hear his music. Can't help thinking about what he would have created if he'd been able to stay with us longer.
Stan's mom still runs the record company, so it's a good idea to respect copyright and buy the CDs and mp3s.
