  • I play this song to my wife I love her more than anything in this world

  • I saw his son Nathan perform a two hour set of all Stan tunes last night, and it changed my life. This building (Rebecca Cohn in Halifax) was his favorite place to play, and I grew up hearing this wishing I was alive to have been there. Last night, Nathan granted me a two decade long impossible dream. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. If you haven't already, definitely check Nathan's covers of Stan and his original music out, he's just as talented.

  • I think I'm going to go around and start "disliking" some of his videos. I don't think I've seen one video with a single dislike on it. I don't know what that's saying, other than I don't think haters just seek out Stan Rogers songs. Or is he really that damn good? I like to think of it as the latter.

  • love you stan

  • Most amazing and disappointing day I think I can remember in finding great music was when I first discovered Stan Rogers... Amazed at what I heard and disappointed about the hand that life dealt him and his fans....

  • Beautiful

  • What a beautiful song and a fantastic voice. Such a tragedy that he was taken so early - one can only imagine what else he would have written and sung. His voice is so mellow and the words so meaningful.

  • I am 13 now, but in the future THIS WILL BE OUR SONG, person I don't know yet.

  • sorry for not being here sooner

  • I'm twenty-three years old and got married last October. I just heard this song last week.

  • Razhumykin you got that right!! :) This is my favourite song of Stan Rogers.

  • I must have seen Stan a dozen times in Philadelphia, mostly when he sang at the Cheery Tree or aboard the Gazela. Last time he sang "Mary Ellen Carter" and said he hoped we'd never need that song. Next I heard, he was gone.

  • @wogears The Cherry Tree exposed me to more and better music than I could have imagined.

  • For 23 years, I could not talk to her because she would know how I felt, and I was married to another, one night I asked where her significant other was and she said she did not have one. I knew that she was "twice a wife" and now find out she was through with life, but that was 13 years ago, just 32 more years to go.

I'll just be a kid of 103 then.

  • real music, raw tallent, emotion and love goes into every song he sings and it's so hard not to just close your eyes and listen to the beautiful stories he's telling...his music will always live in my hear

  • This is my most favorite song from Stan Rogers; a true pure soul who left this world so early. I'd love to have this as my song for the first dance at my wedding. Who wouldn't want to see the face of the person you love 45 years from now?

  • Every word of this song gives me goosebumps.

  • this is the greatest damn love song ever written.

who else could put the lines "my blood sings with wine" and "there's god in the trees" right back to back?!

  • Perfect love song

  • Had never known this man had lived until half an hour ago. Then I got a link to this video. And then found another 45min video about his life. So I found the singer I like most 27 years after his death - unbelievable... Anyone knows whether his albums are still sold somewhere?

  • @steep99 HIs songs are available on CD from Amazon..

  • @Goneoffshore Thank you.. so I just bought from them the CD "From Fresh Water"

  • @steep99 you can get some at amazon. just bought two of them... great man, awesome voice.

  • When I first heard this live from Rogers I wasn't even twenty-three, so thinking about being married that long wasn't even related to reality. Now looking back so far to when Stan was with us, and back just a little at 45, there is a different color to the meaning.

  • His death was quite a loss for all of us on both sides of the border.

  • Stan Rogers and Two Gallants have the greatest songs I've ever heard. These songs have meaning. While my friends listen to rap or heavy metal. I'd rather listen to this. Amazing,

  • @ColonelTrainwreck Don't worry, your not alone in that boat. I have my "friendstream" music, but these songs are where my heart is.

  • @ColonelTrainwreck Introduce them to it in the right way they might just surprise you, best of luck friend.

  • @ColonelTrainwreck Exactly.

  • this song always makes me feel warm. i've been searching all over for 'half of a heart' online. suggestions?

  • @Skuuurj 'Half of a Heart' is on From Fresh Water. I haven't seen it online, but I have to say that From Fresh Water contains almost all of my favorites of his songs, and it's truly worth buying the entire album. Although I think it might be backordered right now, I know Fogarty's Cove is backordered on their website.

  • @MahSchoolworkMusic

i actually already have the album! i was looking for it online so i could post it elsewhere. spread the love hm?

  • Gives one hope for the new year on so many levels.

  • I love this song. Thanks for posting it.

  • We need more storytellers like Stan.

  • What year was it Stan Rogers died? Oh such a loss.

  • June 2, 1983

  • 83 i think

  • In my opinion probably Canada's most genuine musical talent. The real thing, no recording industry mass-produced junk here, eh.

  • I first heard him on public radio...I wuz campin' on a mountain-top in Vermont. GAWD....

  • I've heard him on public radio once... it was this song. But I've been a fan for as long as I can remember.

  • Canada certainly is...

  • Just think what he would be doing today! He did more to give us all a sense of identity and purpose than anyone in recent memory. The world is a worse place because of his passing.

  • I miss him.

  • Stan Rogers will never be forgotten. It is a lyrical journey into rural Canadian life and he executed it with so much sensitivity and never failed to make it real. His legacy will always live. I remember that plane burning on that Cincinnati runway. It still rocks me to my core.

  • rest in peace

  • What an amazing songwriter! I fell in love with Canadian music because of this man. :~)

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • it is only thanks to being able to hear Stan and Garnets music - found them both by accident on you tube and have bought many of their cd's since. Long may strangers be able to find these two great singers and appreciate their wonderful music

  • if you haven't yet you should check out his son Nathan's music. Stan lives on.

  • Thank you - just played 'Nathan Rogers LIVE in Canmore, AB - Hibbing' see exactly what you mean - thanks

  • Canada was obviously at the front of the queue when the great songwriters were being handed out.

  • @Razhumykin Celine dion, nickelback, justin beiber, etc.

    I rest my case.

  • @Razhumykin

Amen to that -- Despite having lost Stan so many years ago , his fantastic music lives on !!

It gets better with age !!!

  • one of the finest love songs ever. I gave Stan a lift once at the first edmonton folk Festival. Such a nice guy.

  • I miss this guy every time I hear his music. Can't help thinking about what he would have created if he'd been able to stay with us longer.

Stan's mom still runs the record company, so it's a good idea to respect copyright and buy the CDs and mp3s.

  • Yes so true. And yet it is that very fact that gives his music a very interesting feel to the educated listener. The sad songs feel more emotional, and the bright ones even more glowing. Incidentally, I've written a song in light of this nature, so look for is soon.

  • I'll always love this song :) he was such a brilliant musician!

  • I was fortunate to hear Stan for the first time in an intimate coffee shop. He was almost close enough to touch as I was sitting just left of his small stage. He sang this song and a female friend I was with softly sang along with him, harmonizing. I have loved his music ever since and have never forgotten that moment.

  • I truly envy you. I didn't discover him until about eight or nine years ago as I was rummaging around my dad's CD collection I looking for the artist that had played a song that my dad had played a month or two before, which for some reason I suddenly remembered at the time (the song was Barret's Privateers, BTW), Sadly, I was born in 1983, so I never had the chance to hear him live.

  • You just cant find a song like this anymore.

  • great upload thanks. they dont write songs like this anymore.

  • great song,thanks:)

  • This is one of the best written love songs I've ever come across

  • One of the purest voices I have ever heard. Hauntingly beautiful and remembered with fondness always.

Bless his sweet gentle soul forever!

    xx
