The republicans are in a catch 22 situation.

If they abandon the social issues; gay marriage, abortion, etc. Then they'll lose major voter turnout with the base, however if they don't abandon these issues they will be unappealing to the growing moderate constituency.

I would love to vote for a republican party that was actually small government. Our deficit spending has been out of control for three decades, it's going to catch up with us sometime soon.
