regarding your definition of atheism. eve if this is mere comedy, the definition is by the vast majority of users, wrong. most people use the word as meaning not believing in a deity, and that is the way we use it. you can argue that that is what it use to be but definitions change, and words can have multiple definitions, and this is the one used.
@daemonowner This was a little tongue in cheek, yes, but it's not a complete joke either. As you point out very eloquently: atheism means "not believing in" god(s). But not believing a proposition is not the same as positively believing that the proposition is false. Of course the Pope isn't an atheist, but it's still interesting to point out how he most certainly doesn't believe in Vishnu and its ilk.
@rozeboosje i didn't say atheism and what you might call anti-theism were the same, but i still agree with the point. and even though the pope can safely be called a theist and not an atheist, i really want to see his response to the accusation of being an atheist.
@daemonowner Let's put it this way: in the eyes of a Hindu, the Pope *is* an atheist. He doesn't believe in any of the gods that the Hindu thinks are real. That he does believe in a thing called "Yahweh" is, to a Hindu, neither here nor there. To a Hindu, the idea of "Yahweh" is preposterous and meaningless, just like the idea of any "god" is to me.
The term "atheist", of course, was not invented by people who wanted to express their lack of belief in gods. It was a denigrating term.
@SolemnTraveller Your "soul" is a figment of your imagination, and you'd be wasting your life on frivolous nonsense. But if it makes you happy, I'm happy for you. And whether you spell it "god", "God" or "GOD", it is and remains a meaningless 3 letter combination.
lizard popes should be BLASTED TO CUNTERY by the good LORD"S wonderful mercy beams. evaporate their evil unbelief in the BIBLE the only TRUE WORD OF GOD!!!!!LOVEmartunblank
Oh, atheist has come to be a term to refer to absolutely no one (some Christians argue why there exist no atheists) and also to absolutely everyone (except maybe a few hundred people). Isn't this fun, we've targeted what is probably the second most fuzzy word today (God still being the most fuzzy one)
Phase II of my training program is to get people to stop using the word "god" as a synonym for "deity".
"God" is from Goth and means "invoked or begotten one". It isn't in the same family as theos, deus, tiu and deity.
It was invented in the fourth century by Ulfilas when he wrote the Goth Bible as a way to distinguish between the begotten son and the unbegotten father.
I use "deity" for generic and then "the Christian deity called God" when speaking of Him.
Ulfilas was an Arian and he didn't believe that. Read about the Ulfilas, Arius and the Arian controversy at Wikipedia, it's an awesome chapter from history.
The irony is that the monotheistic Christian community accepts the word "god" as an accurate description and name for their deity with no understanding of how the word came into existance and how it contradicts their belief.
Nope! And neither did many others in his day. Constantine resolved the problem in the most intellectual way he knew, he started killing the people who disagreed. Pretty soon he had people voting his way.
But many held to their belief that Jesus, the Son, was seperate from the Father. And, Ulfilas used his unique position of influence with the Goths to cement his belief in the scriptures.
Welcome aboard! You are now a member of the fastest growing non-faith based religion ever created by human kind. New Atheism. Enjoy it! You are not alone.
The US Supreme Court has ruled that Atheism must be considered a Religion in order to come under court authority for first amendment protection by the first amendment law. Therefore, presto, Atheism is religion. Even though it is non-faith based religion, it still gets to be religion. The court is the final arbiter. Cheers!!

There are at least two kinds of Atheists: some are so stupid they don't understand why Theists believe in their gods, and some are so smart that they do.
Ha! Hold your tongue Roze cause you're wrong on this one Buddy!

I am not an atheist. I believe in all of the gods. Yes, I said ALL of the gods. And because of this I only work about 11 days a year, as there is almost always a religious holiday that I must observe because of my religion(s). The only downside is the amount of Holiday cards that I have to send out each month.
First of all this video was stupid. You think a Christian is going to say "OOOhhhh I am an Atheist and don't believe in Jesus anymore! :D" No, they aren't. This video is pretty much pointless. But go ahead and tell me how I am Agnostic. I want you to tell me what I am or what my beliefs are :)
You missed the point of the video. He is merely showing the true meaning of the word atheist. He is not speaking as to how we have taken that word and made it mean all sorts of other things. Atheist by today's standards can mean anything from not believing in Zeus, all the way up to complete denial of any god, and all points in between. I tend to say it means that the person just does not have a belief in god, the end. The rest is determined by the person.
Well said. This video is primarily intended to take the piss out of anyone who thinks they can pedantically insist that their personally preferred definition of the word is the only correct one and that everybody else should STFU and bow down to their superior intellect. Pedantic cunts, in other words XD
You are right, this video is stupid. Words do not have meaning in and off itself or because of how they where derived. In english at least the meaning of words are derived from the way they are used. And I made a mistake. I wanted to say technically speaking every atheist is an agnostic. But this video distracted me.
Sorry but I don't eat dead animals. I think it is funny how my comment about not believe in Jesus has a thumbs down xDD That just tickles me inside :3
Well as an Atheist with no morals. I do sometimes prefer to eat babies. It makes it more interesting when they scream in pain. It's because I don't have the bible to give me morality and a fear of hell. :D

Zeus does exist!
Besides, those silly books about FSM, the abrahamic God, buddhism and hinduism is just a bunch of baloney.
Zeus is our real God.
You need to have faith in him to actually connect to him.
It had been around for such a long time which means it surely should exist.
Remember that Zeus loves you if you love him and as a reward you get to be with him in the skies in the after life.
So remember to LOVE ZEUS!
And the myths say he's real!

Carvaka Philosophy:
Sacred literature, religious injunctions, sacerdotalism and caste are useless and man made.
No deity or supernatural.
No immortal soul.
Karma is an illusion.
Everything is derived of material (mahabhutas).
Material elements have an immanent force (svabhava).
Intelligence is derived from these elements.
Only direct perception gives true knowledge (pratyaksha).

I seem to remember Zeus horribly killing OminousVoice in his video "Impressions 3" and you're trying to tell me he doesn't exist?

I don't believe in Zeus, but Norse mythology is quite interesting and, to be honest, quite awesome. Would much rather believe in Norse gods than the other ones going around.

I'm afraid that when it comes to gods my brain just goes BSOD XD

Haha, very nice video Roze! I'm 16 and I recently subscribed to you, I've always had an interest in theology and I have been an Atheist for over a year now. Keep making the great videos, they're really fun to watch and always open my mind to new things regarding religion, culture, ETC. Great work, you've defiantly earned my sub =)

See my comments to SSanf though.

If I had to pick a god(s), the Greeks had much more interesting ones anyhow. Thanks for the lesson though!

Sorry, but there are many Pagans who still use the Greek pantheon of gods and who do worship Zeus. I prefer the Norse pantheon myself. Hail Thor!

:-)
They certainly don't believe in such gods in the same way the Greeks did. The ancient greeks would call them heretics ;-)
