  • regarding your definition of atheism. eve if this is mere comedy, the definition is by the vast majority of users, wrong. most people use the word as meaning not believing in a deity, and that is the way we use it. you can argue that that is what it use to be but definitions change, and words can have multiple definitions, and this is the one used.

i would prefer to use the one i just stated.

  • @daemonowner This was a little tongue in cheek, yes, but it's not a complete joke either. As you point out very eloquently: atheism means "not believing in" god(s). But not believing a proposition is not the same as positively believing that the proposition is false. Of course the Pope isn't an atheist, but it's still interesting to point out how he most certainly doesn't believe in Vishnu and its ilk.

  • @rozeboosje i didn't say atheism and what you might call anti-theism were the same, but i still agree with the point. and even though the pope can safely be called a theist and not an atheist, i really want to see his response to the accusation of being an atheist.

  • @daemonowner Let's put it this way: in the eyes of a Hindu, the Pope *is* an atheist. He doesn't believe in any of the gods that the Hindu thinks are real. That he does believe in a thing called "Yahweh" is, to a Hindu, neither here nor there. To a Hindu, the idea of "Yahweh" is preposterous and meaningless, just like the idea of any "god" is to me.

The term "atheist", of course, was not invented by people who wanted to express their lack of belief in gods. It was a denigrating term.

  • @rozeboosje Yahweh is not a "thing." He is GOD. I swear my soul on it and my life.

  • @SolemnTraveller Your "soul" is a figment of your imagination, and you'd be wasting your life on frivolous nonsense. But if it makes you happy, I'm happy for you. And whether you spell it "god", "God" or "GOD", it is and remains a meaningless 3 letter combination.

  • Anyone who believes in Zeus is an idiot. Everyone knows Odin is the All Father....

  • @malidite LOL

  • this is a religious belief lol; there are several uses for the word today: the most common being the complete unbelief in a higher intelligence.

proud to be a koufhar lol

  • @PhiliptheUSFr huh?

  • LOL this is great but I'm still worshipping Zeus :-p

  • teehee

  • The denotative and connotative meaning of the word atheist does not match the original meaning of the word... we are all not atheists.

  • Yeah. And we all know that words never drift off their original meanings. [rimshot]

And the video category didn't give you a clue? Or the way the video ended?

  • lizard popes should be BLASTED TO CUNTERY by the good LORD"S wonderful mercy beams. evaporate their evil unbelief in the BIBLE the only TRUE WORD OF GOD!!!!!LOVEmartunblank

  • LOL

  • @ThisIsYourPlanet May the Gods have mercy on your soul.

  • Haha the tongue pun at the end. Awesome.

  • :-)

  • I might be an atheist, but I'm drinking milk!

  • :-)

And welcome back. It's damn good to see you.

  • I believe in Zeus. Heathen. :p

  • LOL Thanks

  • Hail Zeus!!

  • w00t!

  • I believe in Zeus

  • Hip hip hurray!

  • Excellent, posted it on my Facebook wall :)

  • cool!

  • Glad your basement cat didn't catch your tounge!

I'm almost a gnostic alienist... but only by speculative mathematics.

  • :-)

  • i'm not an athiest any more.

    Zeus does exist!

Besides, those silly books about FSM, the abrahamic God, buddhism and hinduism is just a bunch of baloney.

    Zeus is our real God.

You need to have faith in him to actually connect to him.

It had been around for such a long time which means it surely should exist.

Remember that Zeus loves you if you love him and as a reward you get to be with him in the skies in the after life.

    So remember to LOVE ZEUS!

And the myths say he's real!

  • Hip Hip Huzzeus!!!!

  • Oh, atheist has come to be a term to refer to absolutely no one (some Christians argue why there exist no atheists) and also to absolutely everyone (except maybe a few hundred people). Isn't this fun, we've targeted what is probably the second most fuzzy word today (God still being the most fuzzy one)

  • LOL

  • I've been trying for a couple of years to get people to look at this and related words:

theos (Zeus), zeu pheter (Father Zeus)

    ious (Jovis), iuppeter (Jupiter)(Father Jove)

    deus/dhyes/dewas/tiwaz (deity)

    tiu (Tyr) tiu's day (Teusday)

All meaning shining one in the sky and/or shining father in the sky or heavenly father

  • yes indeed

  • Phase II of my training program is to get people to stop using the word "god" as a synonym for "deity".

"God" is from Goth and means "invoked or begotten one". It isn't in the same family as theos, deus, tiu and deity.

It was invented in the fourth century by Ulfilas when he wrote the Goth Bible as a way to distinguish between the begotten son and the unbegotten father.

I use "deity" for generic and then "the Christian deity called God" when speaking of Him.

  • But if "I and the father are one," then the invoked or begotten son who is a god is one with the uninvoked, unbegotten deity.

  • Ulfilas was an Arian and he didn't believe that. Read about the Ulfilas, Arius and the Arian controversy at Wikipedia, it's an awesome chapter from history.

The irony is that the monotheistic Christian community accepts the word "god" as an accurate description and name for their deity with no understanding of how the word came into existance and how it contradicts their belief.

  • Ulfilas didn't accept my premises or my conclusion?

  • Nope! And neither did many others in his day. Constantine resolved the problem in the most intellectual way he knew, he started killing the people who disagreed. Pretty soon he had people voting his way.

But many held to their belief that Jesus, the Son, was seperate from the Father. And, Ulfilas used his unique position of influence with the Goths to cement his belief in the scriptures.

  • Back in roman times Christians were called athiests because they rejected their gods.

  • Yup. That would be right.

  • Welcome aboard! You are now a member of the fastest growing non-faith based religion ever created by human kind. New Atheism. Enjoy it! You are not alone.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that Atheism must be considered a Religion in order to come under court authority for first amendment protection by the first amendment law. Therefore, presto, Atheism is religion. Even though it is non-faith based religion, it still gets to be religion. The court is the final arbiter. Cheers!!

  • wtf?

I'm an old git and I have been an atheist all my life.

  • srsly. I am an old git.

  • Yeah, but that's only in America then?

  • Yes, some classic Old Greek language/literature reference! What will you dig out of Latin next?

  • hodie mihi, cras tibi

    :P

  • I guess that means most of us are pedophiles as well. Since I assume most of us have a love for children.

  • Yes. :P

  • "Even the Pope is an Atheist"

Hey, stop giving atheists a bad name ;p

  • My bad. I'm ashamed now. :-)

  • Is that a tongue in cheek reference? Lol, that's how I took it. Great ending Pino, great video to start a morning with! -Max

  • Yup. And cheers!

  • Where did you get that explanation for the origin of the word atheist?

  • I pulled it out of .... [grin]

    srsly though. I did.

  • .... On the silly pills again I see...

  • ;-)

  • If Zeus doesn't exist.. well how then do you explain Thunder? And bananas?

  • Or, even worse, thunderous bananas!? O_O

  • Yes explain that evil-lotionist darwinist bigbangist.

How can they be delicious and be electrical at the same time?

  • To ME the two are not mutually exclusive

    [tosses head]

  • Ha! you just walked right into my trap. I knew it was you electricman. I now know your secret identity. Muhahahaha. Your lust for electric bananas has failed you once again.

  • I'm sure some dudes out there believe in Zeus.

  • And some gals too

  • Hey what is your source that theos=Zeus? I didn't know this and it sounds interesting to look it up for myself.

  • Hm....

Ok. The two words are derived from the same root, you can verify that easily enough by googling. I must admit though that this video is liberally sprinkled with pure and unadulterated bullcrap and it shouldn't be taken seriously; the aim is to wind up the pedants. I think I'm succeeding there. LOL

  • good vid :-)

  • Thanks

  • *cough*etymology fallacy*cough*

  • [wink]

  • Thanks. [wink]

  • Nice :-)

  • Thank you!

  • i tried to ecplain this to 2 atheists the other day and they just couldn't comprehend... even when i gave the definition and etymology they didn't get it...

it made me realize even atheists are stupid. lol

  • no.. no no no! atheists are the smurtest! smUURTEST!

  • LOL

  • There are at least two kinds of Atheists: some are so stupid they don't understand why Theists believe in their gods, and some are so smart that they do.

  • So God is an atheist?

  • if god existed he would be, of course :P

  • I always hated the Richard dawkings version of "we just dont believe in one god more"

But Hey Rozeboosje, you going to celebrate the pagan holiday soon?

  • I'll celebrate any holiday that will result in me getting paid time off.

  • Thanks for sharing something refeshingly different!

  • Life's too short to be serious all the time :-)

  • Ha! Hold your tongue Roze cause you're wrong on this one Buddy!

I worship and obey all of the true and real God's of ancient Greek mythology and guess who my favorite one is? The one that I have all the action heroes of and like 20 of his posters stuck all over my wall? Can you guess? Huh, can ya?

    Zeus mothafucka!

SO your video saying everyone is an Atheist is basically calling me an Atheist which I find highly offensive.

Tonight I will sacrifice so that Zeus hits you with a lightening bolt!

  • Cool! It'll help. We've had a power cut since Tuesday.

  • This is pretty interesting, if nothing else. I never bothered to check the origin of the word atheist, its pretty to know now.

  • Cheers. But please don't take this TOO seriously ...

  • wow. If I go by the comments most people here don't get it ;)

[even after someone actually pointed it out^^]

  • Story of my life XD

  • If I don't believe in Zeus can I still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny?

  • As long as you don't believe in them in compromising situations O_o

  • Aha! And here I have you again.

I am not an atheist. I believe in all of the gods. Yes, I said ALL of the gods. And because of this I only work about 11 days a year, as there is almost always a religious holiday that I must observe because of my religion(s). The only downside is the amount of Holiday cards that I have to send out each month.

  • ROFL

  • and everone is gay, the extent to wich those who are not gay, are gay is equilly proportionate to their antimosity towards gays

  • Yeah! :P

  • Ooh interesting...:)

  • [grin]

  • very clever ;)

  • Thanks for noticing ;-)

  • What if people are born without knowledge of god or gods? Wouldn't that make everyone agnostic?

  • Technically speaking everyone is agnostic.

  • First of all this video was stupid. You think a Christian is going to say "OOOhhhh I am an Atheist and don't believe in Jesus anymore! :D" No, they aren't. This video is pretty much pointless. But go ahead and tell me how I am Agnostic. I want you to tell me what I am or what my beliefs are :)

  • You missed the point of the video. He is merely showing the true meaning of the word atheist. He is not speaking as to how we have taken that word and made it mean all sorts of other things. Atheist by today's standards can mean anything from not believing in Zeus, all the way up to complete denial of any god, and all points in between. I tend to say it means that the person just does not have a belief in god, the end. The rest is determined by the person.

  • Well said. This video is primarily intended to take the piss out of anyone who thinks they can pedantically insist that their personally preferred definition of the word is the only correct one and that everybody else should STFU and bow down to their superior intellect. Pedantic cunts, in other words XD

  • You are right, this video is stupid. Words do not have meaning in and off itself or because of how they where derived. In english at least the meaning of words are derived from the way they are used. And I made a mistake. I wanted to say technically speaking every atheist is an agnostic. But this video distracted me.

  • *whoosh*, eh?

  • * pats you on the head * don't worry dwaithy, you can still believe in jesus... and whatever else you want to believe in.

did you remember to mail your letter to santa?

  • I don't believe in Jesus :P

  • Good boy. Have a scooby snack.

  • Sorry but I don't eat dead animals. I think it is funny how my comment about not believe in Jesus has a thumbs down xDD That just tickles me inside :3

  • I draw the line at eating live animals.

  • Well as an Atheist with no morals. I do sometimes prefer to eat babies. It makes it more interesting when they scream in pain. It's because I don't have the bible to give me morality and a fear of hell. :D

  • Where's the fun in that? Babies can't run. I love the thrill of the chase.

  • ROFL

  • Do you know the meaning of the phrase "tongue in cheek"?

  • Gnostics are just confused dogmatists

  • LOL

  • Gnosticism is the notion that the concept of God can be discovered through intellectual activity rather than taken as an article of faith. At least the more popular Gnostics of today are indeed crypto-theists. Willaim Larry Craig for instance. However the concept of gnosticism still as some intellectual vigor left in it, if one can entertain the notion of an impersonal and/or deistic God.

  • And a-theistic too

  • *raises hand* what about people who believe in Zeus or is a person who believes in all gods (heh impossible on the last one)

  • Yeah, I'm known to exaggerate a tiny little bit on occasion :P

  • The word atheist has evolved.

  • Pssst.... don't be giving the game away now :P

But yeah, it sure has. And it still is evolving. Like all language is.

  • Wow! You're gonna' have me spending a whole 'nother night laughing! Great video!!

  • Cheers

  • Man, you have like a gazzilion videos!!! You must be the youtuber who has the most vids in the small amount of time!! lol great vid though!

  • LOL

Not even close - I may have a lot done, but it did take me 3 years all the same. Some produce more in a fraction of the time :P

  • For your next vid you could always read out and tally up the number of death threats ur going to inevitably receive as a result of this haha!

  • May Zeus and Thor team up to smite me with sparkly thunderbolts!

  • Non-believer of the existence of the Greek king of the gods and proud of it. I think most people on this planet would agree with this position, but then irony is not a widely recognised form of humour and selective acceptance a rarely realised mode of personal self-criticism.

  • Quite

  • I didn't know that. Weird, had I been walking around a Greek marketplace circa 300 BCE I might have recognized the word and shouted "Over here!"

  • TBH, I'm sure there is some truth to what I'm saying, but I'm also quite sure that a good portion of it is unadulterated BS. But I knew it would wind a few folks up and that alone makes it all worth while [blush]. Ain't I a stinker?

  • Exactly... That is what I try to tell theists, but they do not seem to want to hear the truth. ;O)

    Katalyzt

  • [grin]

  • I am literally, literally just uploading a video making this exact point.

    Fuckme.

  • Hey, does it matter? The more the merrier :-)

I have to check that out though. :-)

  • regarding that tongue joke... I dont think I can really take that too seriously.

  • LOL

  • lol! r u going insane? XD

  • I've lived here all my life. :P

  • I'm closer to a Carvaka and they faded out 15th century BCE. I can't find out why but I have my suspicions.

    Carvaka Philosophy:

Sacred literature, religious injunctions, sacerdotalism and caste are useless and man made.

    No deity or supernatural.

    No immortal soul.

    Karma is an illusion.

Everything is derived of material (mahabhutas).

Material elements have an immanent force (svabhava).

Intelligence is derived from these elements.

Only direct perception gives true knowledge (pratyaksha).

  • Strong Atheist is sufficient and takes less explanation.

  • :-)

  • Zeus ejaculated on a mountain

I have no idea why that is of any relevance

  • Now I know where glaciers cum from

  • Trust the Greeks to philosophize a complementing insult.

  • Beware of Greeks bearing gifts

  • That's hard, now I need to make a long list of what I am..

    Ajesusist

    Amermaidist

    ALochNessMonsterist

    Ayetist

    Aluckist

    AGeorgeWBushist

    AThorist

What about ...A-bollock-ist! that should cover most things.

  • Yup, I can identify with that :-)

  • Wait a minute, I do believe in Zeus, Samuel L Jackson played him in Die Hard 3.

  • Hahaha

  • I don't get the 'tongue' joke (i'm dutch btw)

  • Rakly3: Look up "tongue-in-cheek" on Wikipedia, it's a... saying, sort of. I don't know how to explain it any differently than the Wikipedia article. ;)

  • Yeah. "tongue in cheek". like helgihg said. It basically means: please don't take this too seriously.

  • I seem to remember Zeus horribly killing OminousVoice in his video "Impressions 3" and you're trying to tell me he doesn't exist?

  • I humbly stand corrected :P

  • i accept pascal's wager, but only when it comes to fishing "wish me luck!"

  • ROFL

  • Greeks were also rapant homos!

  • LOL

  • I don't believe in Zeus, but Norse mythology is quite interesting and, to be honest, quite awesome. Would much rather believe in Norse gods than the other ones going around.

  • I'm afraid that when it comes to gods my brain just goes BSOD XD

  • Haha, very nice video Roze! I'm 16 and I recently subscribed to you, I've always had an interest in theology and I have been an Atheist for over a year now. Keep making the great videos, they're really fun to watch and always open my mind to new things regarding religion, culture, ETC. Great work, you've defiantly earned my sub =)

  • Cheers.

  • excuse me - some people do actually believe in Zeus.

  • I might have exaggerated somewhat [grin]

See my comments to SSanf though.

  • If I had to pick a god(s), the Greeks had much more interesting ones anyhow. Thanks for the lesson though!

  • I hope you watched it to the very end. [nudge] and a [wink]

  • You mean the tongue and cheek part? ; )

  • yeah :P

  • Sorry, but there are many Pagans who still use the Greek pantheon of gods and who do worship Zeus. I prefer the Norse pantheon myself. Hail Thor!

  • :-)

They certainly don't believe in such gods in the same way the Greeks did. The ancient greeks would call them heretics ;-)
