Indeed you're correct that the RIRA and CIRA are not anywhere on the same level as the PIRA but the fact that they still exist says something. The GFA hasn't ended the conflict because it has not solved the basic argument in Northern Ireland. Republicans will endlessly push towards a united Ireland where as Unionists will resist it with as much vigor. And even if it were ever to come about, the struggle would still not end, the roles would simply be reversed.
I'll agree with you as far as that goes, there'll be a role reversal somewhere down the line. I would imagine that when Scotland gets independance Ireland won't be too far behind, but as you say, there'll be a swell in trouble here if it happens.
I don't think it'll ever go back to what it was though. I don't think the main body of either community will support a return to violence without an enormous catalysing event, so it'll never be on the same scale as the troubles.
And I think that the enormous catalyzing event would be Irish unification. I personally don't see Scottish independence happening, main because for the size of its population, Scotland gets more out of the Union than England does when it comes to monetary incentives. Were there ever to be an actual change in the sovereignty of Northern Ireland, I think that that would be a catalyst enough to get Loyalists to dust of their AKs and go back to the old work, 'cept they would be shooting the Garda.

If the British government ever do pull out of Ulster then it won't revert to the Republic seeing as Southern Ireland have given up thier claim to it. Northern Ireland would have to become its own independant state as Southern troops entering the North would most likely be illegal.

Bottom line is when a civilian is killed by police it tends to be taken more seriously than if they are shot by a paramilitary, because the public demand answers as to why children end up dead. That's reasonable.

This is a long ceasefire at best. As long as Northern Ireland remains a part of the United Kingdom, it wont matter how integrated the schools are or how much power sharing there is in Stormont. The Republican and Nationalist movements have an ultimate goal that is anathema to the Unionist community. Just because Sinn Feinn sits in the government that doesn't mean they've abandoned their cause, and I'm sorry if Unionist politicians are smart enough to realize that.

Indeed you're correct that the RIRA and CIRA are not anywhere on the same level as the PIRA but the fact that they still exist says something. The GFA hasn't ended the conflict because it has not solved the basic argument in Northern Ireland. Republicans will endlessly push towards a united Ireland where as Unionists will resist it with as much vigor. And even if it were ever to come about, the struggle would still not end, the roles would simply be reversed.

I'll agree with you as far as that goes, there'll be a role reversal somewhere down the line. I would imagine that when Scotland gets independance Ireland won't be too far behind, but as you say, there'll be a swell in trouble here if it happens.
I don't think it'll ever go back to what it was though. I don't think the main body of either community will support a return to violence without an enormous catalysing event, so it'll never be on the same scale as the troubles.

I personally don't see Scottish independence happening, main because for the size of its population, Scotland gets more out of the Union than England does when it comes to monetary incentives. Were there ever to be an actual change in the sovereignty of Northern Ireland, I think that that would be a catalyst enough to get Loyalists to dust of their AKs and go back to the old work, 'cept they would be shooting the Garda.

I have seen Cluan Place, and it looks nothing like those photos. They've cleaned it up and it looks nice now. There were kids playing and everything seemed fine.
Belfast has turned over a new leaf, there are still a few troublemakers but 99.9% of people are ready to move on and forget all this sort of crap. This type of video just encourages the old hatred.

If the British government ever do pull out of Ulster then it won't revert to the Republic seeing as Southern Ireland have given up thier claim to it. Northern Ireland would have to become its own independant state as Southern troops entering the North would most likely be illegal.
