Actually man, he's not really the type to be stamped by either "Flashy" or "Mellow". YOU need to do some research. John talks about how at different times he's been influenced by different people, and it's true that he only began studying musical theory AFTER he auditioned for Frank Zappa. When he was writing "By The Way" and "Californiacation" with the Chili's you couldn't pay him to listen to Hendrix or Jimmy Page. But in between BTW and Stadium, he became interested in them once again..
Yeah I read that john feels he has to constantly move on and evolve his sound and style, because if he ever felt he was stuck in a rut doing the same thing every day he'd just stop playing......thats the trouble with too many people in general, they get stuck in the same old routine, and accept it......bit like me really....stuck in the same old routine...
He's not the best guitarist, but he is certainly the greatest. Heart + Soul. I bet Yngwie couldn't come up with anything close to Under The Bridge intro or Scar Tissue solos. I don't think John gives a damn about "picking", he just plays what he feels like... And I respect that.

I have to say... i was not impressed at all by any of those live solos from Don't Forget Me.... just a bunch of repetitive triplets. For REALLY impressive guitar playing in the same genre, check out Nuno Bettencourt.... his bands: Extreme, DramaGods, Mourningwidows, Nuno, Satellite Party.
the beauty is that it is only triplets, but if you listen he is taking into consideration Flea's bass playing, and his solo changes with the bass chord changes. that harmony is what makes it great
even with all that... it's not really anything in comparison to a lot of other players.... I mean, all of that HAS to be taken into consideration, otherwise you're left with straight guitar playing over drums - and that's terrible. There are monumental players who are not only fast and far more technically proficient than Frusciante, but they also have more creative changes as well... I pretty much make that a requirement for everyone I listen to... I wouldn't expect anything less.... which means that you've fulfilled the minimum with John Frusciante.

John listens to alot of technical players. EVH, Hendrix, etc. Hes been playing guitar and studying theory since he was about 7 years old. Just look at the tabs to Snow. That riff alone is insane. He could be a real flashy player, but he says he tries to downplay it as much as possible. watch some of his solos from the early 90s. lots of noise. good, simple, beautifully raw noise.
He has not been studying theory since 7 years old... that is something recent. When you say he down plays his solo's that's false as well. He use to be subtle but more recently or at least on Stadium Arcadium he was much more flashy and was listening to flashy guitarists like Jimmy Page.
john puts everything into the music he makes whether its solo stuff or RHCP stuff he is a god and people should really appriciate him alot more than they do =) i bet the likes of Steve Vai, Satch and Malmsteen and even Paul Gilbert appriciate what john has done for music today =) i know i fuckin do
