  • I was born in 1946 in England - but I often wondered why I was always called an Irish Bastard - I remember when the Queen was crowned - parties everywhere - beautiful presents - we didn't get any - but we were all born in Britain- I remember going to school in Kilburn - and seeing the rooming houses - No Niggers and no Irish

  • Love this song but hate all the negative comments on here. My dads English, my Mum is Irish (but came to England as a child) and her grandfather came to Ireland originally from Italy! I am an atheist and so are most my family going right back to my grandfather who was born and grew up in Ireland. How am I supposed to feel apart from sad at the history and the continued hatred!

  • The 10 people who disliked this song must have no soul. This music is so rich and beautiful... how could any human being not be moved by it?

  • Im English and proud of it, love this song also remember that many english were also sent to Botany Bay by the crown for stealing to feed their kids as I would steal to feed mine if I had too.It was nt personal they just hated all lower classes we were all scum to them. Peace to all except any terrorists and thats worldwide.

  • I just like this music. :)

  • @Taiginator What the hell do you mean?

  • there was never a famine in ireland there was only english rule

  • This song is the result of the best ten years of my life, while singing it at a British Legion on Remembrance day here in the Isle of Wight I was approached by a member of the local Barbershop Harmony Club who insisted on me joining them. Not unlike the Fields of Athenry the harmony club sing meaningful, well known and beautiful song in perfect harmony. Every song has a story whether sad or happy but always enjoyable to the listener. So enjoy the song.. Wight Harmony Deputy Director..

  • @4898erich very good as the end of the day its one hell of a good tune!!!and its good to be sung by anyone?

  • It is a lovely song. While it reminds us of a negative period we must not sink into thinking the Irish were not guilty of horrible acts against the English or the Scots. The raids and killings in Cornwall. The use of the French to attack other residents of the UK. The tribe of Scottii and the Scotland's first king was Irish yet we could not live in harmony. We're all brothers and sisters and related more than we think sometimes. Love on.

  • I'm Irish...and politics or no...

The meaning, the words break my heart every time.

  • god bless ireland

  • Wow! this is a beautiful song. i am trying to play it on guitar sorry to hear all the negative comments. i know i was in a bar in New Zealand many years ago and me and a girl were singing Waltzing Matilda and we were told to stop. this was my first exposure to prejudice against songs. In the USA we, at least, don't have to worry about what songs we sing

  • Cuireann cuid mhaith de na rudaí atá scríobha ar seo isteach orm,mar gheall ní go leor gur rinne sibh iarracht ar tír a ghlacadh uainn ach anois cuireann sibh muid síos! Ach thig leom seo a rá iarracht a bhí ann,mar níor cuir sibh na Gael amach as an tír!! Anois tá muid níos laidre, ceart go leor tá na sé contae agaibh faoin corn ach ní rud ar bith é sin anois! Agus doibh a glacann reiligiún isteach ann,níl ceangall ar bith idir é sin agus an cogadh idir an Bhreatain agus Éire!

  • @GMAIL473 this song is all about the history though.........DOH.......if you dont learn from history you are doomed to repeat it..............so lets forget about all the genocides and how not to conduct human life then?..........stop being a wuss and face reality of evolution's tragic consequences

If history has no bearing why are you speaking germanic language to me and not the native irish :D ;P tink aboot eet!!

  • @wackster66 i know all that and as i said its history...just enjoy the song with out all the negative comments...theres no need for it..

  • @GMAIL473 my comments weren't meant to be negative, just stating a fact, this song is beautiful and emotional in it's own right. And I always enjoy it whenever I hear it.

  • @wackster66 i wasnt even talking about your comments.there was nothing wrong with your comments...so i apoligise for that mistake..and no i dont need to swear..i was just annoyed..so i apoligise again...im removing that comment that i did make..:)

  • @GMAIL473 thanks for the reply and apology, happy Youtubing : )

  • @GMAIL473 do you really need to swear so much?...just saying : )

And no the "past" - it is very much present to this very day. Do one England - go AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrG not you don't foreget whe your nation has been raped, insulted, subjucated....the list can go one. Independant Eira, now and forever, and I will be forever deictaed to thecause...

  • This is the best version

  • I literally never heard this song until 10 minutes ago and I'm in tears. That my name is that of the hero in the song has absolutely nothing to do with it, and I'm neither Irish nor Catholic. I can't believe this song wasn't written until 1970, it sounds contemporary to the story. I wish there could be a sequel with a happy ending.

  • With love from Liverpool x

  • lovelovelove it! such a touching fantastic song, R.I.P granny we all miss you so much its untrue xxxxx

  • rip grandad ( paddy lynch) this was his favourite song.

  • a great song from a great country, i am english my grandparents and great grandparents were irish and scots i remember my grandmother singing this song and many other rebel songs .i was never taught about irish history in school except a little about cromwell, learnt everything i know about it from family and books. yes thier is bad history between our countries but thier are in the past we must look to a better future where the past is not forgotten but perhaps can be forgiven

  • @wlaing57 yeah i think your right im irish btw but the past is the past we should 4 get it and move on i hope our countrys be aliies cuz i do forgive the british i don like wht they did but it all in the pas no need to try make it happen again and i love d history the english have gave us if it wusnt for them i wudnt of passed my history lol

  • @pureprodkeoghgoals how can we move on after such a horriffic time

  • @MrGunguy2 easy just forgive and forget war is not going solve anything wht happend happend so we just have to leave it i noit be hard bt least there tryinng to do it the least we can do is do the same

  • @wlaing57 I am glad you agree it is a rebel song, but beautiful and without anger, some people shouted me down for saying it was. I totally agree with what you said about the future and being forgiven.

  • love this song..one of my favorites its beautiful..xx

  • Happy St Georges day !!!!

  • Happy St Georges day day !!!!

  • ohh my beautiful Ireland I cant wait to come home for good in 3weeks :) no more uni!!!

  • if ever there was a rebel song to sing to..this is it..regardless of troubles..beautiful song

  • Fantastic ballad

  • im english my dads english my granda came from glasgow and my great granda came from kilkenny. does that mean u all hate me then! and what about the large irish population in liverpool.

  • @haltykern yes thats quite true, you insult the english of Irish descent because you are wrapped up in sentiment, I come from Liverpool and yes all my ancestors are Irish but I am english, if you insult me you are also insulting my IRISH ancestors, get it

  • it ALL BECAUSE OF THE ENGLISH THAT THE IRISH HAVE SUFFERD AND THEY DONT EVEN TEACH IT IN ENGLISH SCHOOLS THEN THEY WOUNDER WHY WE HATE THEM!

  • @fuckylucker a lot of people don't like the English, they have had a long history of wars against other countries. Ireland, America, France, and Scotland are just a few

  • @eques101 yes..and that is where great Britain came from..but now we are great for nothing ..except letting anyone in and dictate how we live..how sad.. we took peoples' land and culture...and now we let them take ours

  • PROUD TO BE IRISH

  • How can people have disliked this song, this song is not something to be made a joek of, its a serious ting which happend in Ireland -__-

  • i LOVE this song!!!!!!low lie the fields of athenry...

  • Why any football team would want to be associated with the any of these groups is beyond me. Recognizing and celebrating your roots is great but hating and killing people for reasons that most of them don't understand and doesn't affect them makes no sence. The Old firm - Scotland's shame

  • @Dannyboino1

everything you say i agree with until you start bashing the old firm for no reason, I'm a proud Celtic fan through & through, i also happen to be a protestant. When you preach about peace don't mention the cause of chaos.

  • I'm a scottish girl, brought up in Scotland till 16, joined the RN and lived most of my time in England till 2007. I remember listening to ALL the Irish folk songs as a child and them having nothing to do with football, I would love my daughter to know all these songs without being asked who she supports or what religion she is!!!! We are C of S Protestant and Rangers supporters but these songs have nothing to do with Football, let our children miss out on all this bigotry.............

  • So proud to be irish :D going through town yesterday singing this with al my friends (HAPPY B-LATED PADDY"S DAY):D

  • listen to the music wcant change history

  • I prefer more traditional sounding Irish songs over their rock/modern counterparts

  • @LaughingNoiseStudios same here

  • ................dropkick murphys.

  • I love that song!

  • the song that has sweet fuck all to do with celtic football club

  • @StevieBlunderful neither has simply the best but the gers still sing it.

  • @MsMolly47 that is true, just can't get enough? that isn't a celtic song either, the arguement could go on forever, but what im saying is the fields of athenry is an irish folk song which opens a new door, why would a scottish football club sing an irish folk song which has nothing to do with football, to mention simply the best it is sung at ibrox because we believe rangers are simply the best, why sing the irish folk song which is aimed against the crown, for a british club to sing that is wrong

  • @StevieBlunderful why listen 2 the song doesnt matter if its an irish song most of us do have some irish blood in us like my self im half irish n half scotish fuk u's sing a song that tina turner sang what can i say we sing it coz we like the song

  • @StevieBlunderful Then why do you all shout "no surrender" that is to do with a protestant army defending against a catholic army, it also has nothing to do with football so dont critisise celtic fans singing irish songs when you are no different. Fuck the queen and the UDA.

  • You should enjoy a good song and stop having arguments over things that don't even matter to you now... or at all...

  • Up the rebels

  • Great Song :) I Do Not Blame All Of It On The English. I Am irish Myself And Hate The Way The English Treated The Irish But You Can Understand Why Te English Decided To Start Plantations In Ireland, King Henry Thought It Would Be A BAse For His Enemys So He Had To. Anyone Would Have Done The Same. And Before That We Were The People Who Invited The English Over I.e Strongbow ? Therefore The Reasons For Invading Ireland Were Ok But There Methods Towards The Irish People Were Disgusting.

  • @seanbarry96 There are no right reasons to attack any country

  • @seanbarry96 the best about it is, that the irish invaded England first, when the English were not very bright going back to just after the Romans left, the Irish invaded parts of cornwall and Wales, and dominated large parts of the land, some people really do not understand history, and are wrapped up in sentiment, in the past it was a question of dominate or be dominated, simple as , if the english had stayed dumb who knows who would have taken us over, by the way all my ancestors are Irish,

  • your gay

  • Learning this on acoustic guitar :D Im pretty good :D

  • me brother michael passed away far too early just love this song so did he..dad also called michael. he 94 gonna hold on for his telegram. georgie

  • c'monn the hoops<3

  • its certainly a lovely song

  • @acdcskater1000 They did suffer. Before the Famine there was about 8 million people living in Ireland but hundreds, thousands, millions died. Now only 4 million people live in Ireland.

  • @JesseCremins I totally say you and Scotland like team up and fight England for revenge.

  • @MrAmericaRules Haha possibly!!

  • @JesseCremins

Many died, and many were sent overseas (Australia, mainly) as a form of punishment.

  • linda linda musica......

  • hail hail

  • four iditiots who don't like this video......such a beautyful song......i'm dreaming away....

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!

  • poor old travellion, michael was a thieveing bugger, couldn't keep his nob in his trousers, then blames everybody else because the pope wouldent let him use a dupe-dupe... why should the rest of us be inconvenienced because of what comes out of her marys minge... cant do the time, dont do the time michael.... now mary gets over a grand a week on welfare. shes better off without the thieveing scumbag.

  • @finnbarrhagan The only "thieveing bugger" around were the English gentry who kicked the Irish off their land, then ruled with the rifle. (BTW, it's 'thieving') You have obviously never lived under the cosh.

  • @krustybiker ive been fighting the fuckers all my life, and stand defiant aghenst those that didnt. i know its not the english, its whats behind them, the crown, they sufferd as mutch as the irish, we are up agenst a dark force that is fucking the world up. its the banks. theyre recruiting kids in irish schools to joine the british army in their fight agenst tourisim in afghanistan and iraq. get the enemy right, then attack, blessings, finn... sorry about the spelling.

  • best song ever

  • I love the Irish amazing song, so moving

  • I found this on facebook .through a friend .its such a haunting tune .its addictive even.

  • this was my nans song, r.i.p nan, ur sorely missed....

  • @communist73 Let me guess Mr "Communist", you don't even know what "proletarii vsekh stran, soyedinyates" means do you? Its "workers of the world, unite" in Russian and was the motto of the USSR. What happened to one world, one people? What happened to workers everywhere uniting under the cause of worldwide socialist revolution? You are obviously racist against british people, you are no communist. Go and join the Irish equivilant of the BNP, they sound more like your thing.

  • No, you're wrong, unfortunately, "peaceful protest and dignified political resistance" - no one listens to that, no one listens anymore. It's sick, it's sad but that doesn't make headlines and headlines are all anyone cares about now. Justice? what's justice? Justice is merely a tool used for the advancement of whatever political party is in power. It has nothing to do with whomever is worthy. God help us all!

  • @dreamcatcher2398 Justice is a subjective view. But the end never justifies the means: destroying hopes, dreams and lives in the pursuit of a political ideal only undermines the ideal that they are fighting for. I wouldn't care about a united Ireland or remaining part of the UK but I am disillusioned with the fact that no matter what way it goes it will have been a trail of tears, suffering and bloodshed borne by the innocent in the greatest part. What cause or bit of land is worth so much pain?

  • @communist73 Proletarii veskh stran, soyedinyates, komrade! Or does that just apply to Irish people? Twat.

  • is breá liom an amhrán seo ta sé go hallínn

  • i love this song & i'm english it's a beautiful song & yes the brits commited atroceties in ireland but the poor people in britain suffered just as much but we havnt got these beautiful songs to sing about our suffering its not the english or scots or welsh to blame its the ruling classes of britain thats guilty .

  • @baggieboy1968 YES you are correct, the elite class, the ruling class, they and the Banksters control all of us, no matter our nationality, colour or creed

I'm from Belfast,I lived thro' 30 years of hell.yet it's nothing to what the Palesinian, the Iraq, the Afghan peoples have to endure under the oppression of Israel and American Imperialism.

  • I'm a proud Irish 16 year old boy, living in England, who will never forget his Irish roots. I am so incredibly proud to be Irish and will always pass my Irish heritage down the generations of my family.

Erin go bragh - Forever Ireland.

  • It was the Norman/Welsh alliance which William formed that plundered Ireland. The English were subjected to the same ruthless barbarians as the Irish were. You should have helped us send the beggar back to France where he belonged.

  • @dannynavyboy you made a great point but I still think that the IRA Is not a terrorest group. I think it is a freedom fighting group

  • @MrZaco32 The original IRA or Republican Brotherhood wasn't the a terrorist group. The so called IRA of the North became terrorists as soon as they blew innocent civilians to peices in bomb raides. The only good some of them do is protecting catholics in some area's

  • @RScomercials I think I speak for most people when I say that I would much prefer bigots like yourself to die out than any particular religious group. If twats like you wanna take us back to the bad old days then work away, I'm gonna leave Belfast as soon as I finish in Uni and never return because I don't want to raise a family in this cesspit of hate propagated by degenerates like yourself.

  • @dannynavyboy1985 ok good by we wont miss you

  • @XxXIRISHSNIPER So are u actually a sniper then mo chara or let me guess, you are an internet rebel who talks big, slags everyone off with poor grammar and even worse spelling but is really just a nobody. Perhaps you stand on street corners drinking Buckfast (made in England) and talking about when your day will come and you will live happily in a bankrupt united Ireland? Or maybe you are old enough to sit in bars (eg. the Felons) and do that? Have fun in the UK dole queue.

  • @dannynavyboy1985 its my xbl name in not from the north are u a unionist or republican

  • @XxXIRISHSNIPER Im not a unionist or a republican because I don't give a flying fuck about the future of this shit hole that I live in. I do, however, care about normal people who deserve better having their lives ripped apart by your "heroes" who leave bombs under cars, shoot people while they sleep in bed, shoot people as they sing hymns in church etc etc. as well as the equally cowardly loyalists. Fuck you and ur bigoted beliefs, fuck off and leave us in peace.

  • @XxXIRISHSNIPER Why are you happy supporting people who ruin lives? Are you happy supporting people who continue to ruin lives? Oppression may breed resistance but resistance doesn't bring freedom: dialogue, peaceful protest and dignified political resisitance would let people see the justice of your cause. But the psychoticism masquerading as freedom fighting exhibited by your heroes is loathed by decent people everywhere. Why not make a worthy person like John Hume a hero of resistance?

  • @dannynavyboy1985 TO TRUE

  • Give me Paddy and Christy Moore everyday, the best balladeers we have ever produced, with the utmost respect to all singers!

  • beautiful !!!!

  • @irishgold29...

If you don't think that the british killed woman and children then your wrong. Look up bloody Sunday not the song but the real thing then get back to me. I like you that's I'm not saying this in anger

  • I love how people from around the world rate and comment on this. Thank you. If any British cunt tries to type on this I will fuckin go crazy. IRA!

  • @MrZaco32 I agree with you and Irish pride all the way forever strong but when people start killing children and women that's where I draw the line

  • @MrZaco32 I love how you, like racists everywhere, looks at people as a whole and not as individuals. It is not fair to hold every British person guilty for the many atrocities committed in Ireland in the past few centuries, much the same way as we don't hold every German guilty for the holocaust, every American guilty for slavery or every Muslim guilty for 9/11. Perhaps then you believe that every Irish person should be accountable for Omagh, Teebane, Enniskillen, La Mon, Darkley etc etc?

  • @MrZaco32 Why does it matter who wishes to listen to and enjoy this song? Sorry if you have actually gone crazy.

  • Love this song, brings tears everytime I hear it, great, Clwydian

  • It was the highly moralistic Irish immigrants who ended slavery in America. It was the Irish--who were itching to fight the brits--who were the backbone of the American Revolution. JFK, the Irishman who brought you Civil Rights.

  • what a beautiful song i love it

  • irish 4 life irish come on

  • such a beautiful song!!
