The only reason the British sank the Rex was that since Italy wasn't our enemy anymore, she had become Germany's enemy & they were after Rex. So Rex had it easy. The German's wanted to blow her to pieces.
The Rex was such a wonderful ship. Rex was the only Italian Liners that can go for speed. But still.... Rex was a floating art palace. It hurts to see her destroy like that. Italy wasn't even a enemy anymore.
Oh, I guess my part of this thread won't last long--I've been tagged as a spammer. But, I really appreciate this post. As a Petrella and a Re (my maternal family came from Naples and from Turin), I am most appreciative. This post means a lot and has been linked to my "main" Facebook account--Marshall Hackett, Minneapolis, MN.
I'm sorry. But know, there r Americans of Italian decent who r loyal to the US and who never believed Italy should have done what she did in the 30s and 40s. A strong king could have changed everything. I am sorry for your loss. My grandmother came from a town outside of Naples. She never wanted to return to Italy. "Why,?" she would ask, "We are Americans."
But, Rex, would have become a French or US ship after the war--if she had sailed west. Her loss was unnecessary.
@TheGigmus1 no one deserved anything. my mother is %50 Italian and my grandfather is %100 Italian. they are very loving and kind people, but they were (unfortunately) guided in the wrong direction in WW2. i'm sorry about your grandfather, but it's no reason to dislike someone. besides, my great grandfather was killed by Germans, and yet i don't dislike them. the past cannot be undone, only accepted for the painful thing it is. enjoy your holiday!
Excellent video. It is so sad the things that can be lost to war. A beautiful ship. A work of art. At that point in the war the Allies could have waited and used her to transport soldiers home. I hate to say it but the British can be down right cruddy when they want to be.
Why couldn't the Italians save Rex. No Liner & I MEAN NO Ocean Liner has to go though the undignify fate of being scrapped. GOD, That gets me worked up & so full of Hate!!!
Thanks. This Itlalian-America (two generations out from the homeland) apppreciates the tribute. The Rex was the greatest liner Italy ever produced; and she may well have been the greatest liner ever produced.
The tune brought me to tears; but, I appreciated it.
That was the finest way or travelling ever!!!Planes are obviously faster nowadays, but we can`t compare this, i mean.Would someone travel from Italy to NY in a plane sitting in a small seat in tourist class when we can spend six faboulous days crossing the Atlantic in this magnificent pice of art???Some things had gone because of technology and that's a real shame...
Thanks for this wonderfull vide. The WWII brought not only the end of some millions people, but also for a few hundred ships, and some highlights, than REX, Normandie, Champlain ....
touching video! The person who sings the song is an awesome singer...is she the same singer as from the Normandie (part 3, when she's towed to the scrapyard) video?
The south of Italy at that time was full of farmers mafia people and comunist parties , and that's why there were a lots of partisans and people that move to Argentina or USA, even some serve in the American Army, while the north was a socialist party with industrial cities and rulal people, that's why Italy was really hard to command and that's why the north survive into the Axis until the end of the war
Gli Inglesi vollero dimostrare la loro schiacciante vittoria, la loro indiscutibile superiorità, attaccando un simbolo della potenza Italiana, emblema di una nazione di secondo rango che aveva, nonostante tutto, osato sfidarla.

That part of the coast between Koper and Izola is still known as "By Rex". There's also a commemorative plate at the site.

Italy wasn't even a enemy anymore, I understand that they had to keep Rex from the Germans, but couldn't she have been sunk in much deeper waters.

@SuperTitanicfreak yes, americans have been very cruel with us, they destroyed an unharmed boat (with people on it!!!)
