It wasn't so much a greater talent, but a music and style that was so much different than Kobain's songs of hateful introspection and fixation on wrongs. Vedder knew how to love, not that Kobain didn't, but Vedder wrote about it with joy (at times, and in lamented words like this song displays) while Kobain's words were always so filled with a certain pain derived from a much earlier and deeper root. They really were quite different generes, as I'm sure most listeners agree.
