Dio took Sabbath from being a drunken, Heavy Blues band, to being a tight METAL band. And as far as I'm concerned, Tony Martin's era carried on that tradition that Dio started; he has an amazing voice, and I prefer his era to Ozzy's any day of the week. I grew up listening to this stuff in the 70's thanks to two older cousins who laughed at my Kiss records and said,"We'll show some bands with REAL musicians in them; and they gave me Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Rainbow records.
Well, from my perspective - over 30 years of playing drums and 10 years of Opera training - KISS aren't really "Musicians", Kiss are Entertainers. Even Gene Simmons said that; he said that was one of the problems with Mark St. John - he was a musician while they were Entertainers. Don;t get me wrong - I like Kiss, but the one album where they showed their most Musical side - "The Elder" - is the one that most people hate, and it is actually my favorite. My older cousins hated them.
I know that, I have that CD, I think it's 23. anniversary, but beside of that they are living like band almost 40 years now, so that means they are VERY VERY good musicians and entertainers, Peter, Gene and Paul maybe are not, Peter is not so great drummer, but Criss and Singer were in the top drummers of their period, Kulick, St. John, Vincent, also...
Maybe it's difference in opinions, I think they're one of the best bands on the world.
Say whatever you want, I like all Black Sabbath eras, except for the Glenn Hughes era, which was supposed to be Iommi's solo career and not BS. I love Ozzy's voice, its oddity is what makes it good and perfect for the dark blues-metal of their six first albums (TE and NSD are actually weak). Dio's and Martin's voices are excellent for their Hard/Heavy 80's/90's era (but Forbidden is BS's worst album, deal with it). Even Gillan made a good job (I like Born Again). Stop the Bullshit.
some people talked trash about Tony (the singer) because his songs were not as dark themed as Ozzy's songs but even Ozzy made songs about love and nobody sais anything about that..
@kingnuke People actually say that? Odd, seeing as how the darkest album Sabbath ever recorded was Headless Cross. That album is drenched in evil, macabre, Satanism, Occult. People just want to worship Ozzy and cannot accept that their beloved era is through. I mean even the Mob Rules lineup put aside their creative and personal differences twice, with a fifteen year gap between, to give us music. Personally, I am happy we are not forced to hear Ozzy in Sabbath anymore. Dio & Martin era Sabbath!
@TheLuvers666 Yeah! That`s it! I love Dio & Martin era. I love Ozzy too, but as a solo artist. Post-Ozzy BS is the right BS to me and it`s much better than old BS in every aspect.
@Bhlokvva Well don't get me wrong, I love the albums Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage, but the rest is just dull to me. Ozzy is not very versatile of a singer, he's always been more an entertainer. Dio and Martin both had more range and overall skill so Iommi was able to elaborate much more. What happened however was the songs lost commercial skill, but that should never matter. The only solo Ozzy albums I like are Side 1 of BATM and the entire US. Randy bores me and I hate Zakk bores me.
Very nice song. By the way, "Cross Purpose" is an excellent album, there's no bad track on it. If I were Iommi I'd hire Tony Martin to be the vocalist again, no Judas Priest, he and his voice have nothing to do with Black Sabbath. Ozzy?! Never, he is a filthy greedy piece of shit, his ideas and lifestyle have been quite different from Iommi's and Butler's since he left Sabbath. Tony Martin is a carismatic guy and I think his tune of voice does combine with Tony Iommi's hellish-powerful riffs.
Love this song... It's too bad Sabbath fizzled out. This is a great album. I always have preferred the Ozzy years, but the rest is good too, with a few songs that are neither here nor there, but mainly good stuff.
@DarkWolf5250 Wow... Funny how times change. I now far prefer the Dio years to the Ozzy years... And most of the Martin stuff is at least as good as the Ozzy stuff. Ian Gillan did a good job too.
okay, first of all, this is apples and oranges...all of the singers who were with sabbath brought something different to the table, so saying one is better than another is unfair really...yes, on a technical level, dio and martin is a better singer than ozzy, but it's also a different style of singing...and i recall dio not being much of a fan of martin because of the similarities with dio's vocal style (there's a hint of that, but i think he has his own stamp too)...
loldacz the drummer in this video is Bobby Rondaneli ex rainbow. i have all the tony martin solo and sabbath stuff, he is a very underated rock singer.
@Gardena380 Totally agree with you. It's arguably, the best album for Black Sabbath ever and took the band to new dimensions. The power of this album is immense !
@TheEs379 I love track "Born again" with awesome solo, than "Disturbing the priest", uncut, long version of "stonehenge"... I am Sabbath fan, I love every track except most of Tony Martin tracks and every album, except "Forbidden"
People credit Sharon Osbourne for getting the classic lineup of Sabbath together again. She was a big part of it, yes, but not everyone knows her intentions. It was all just go get more attention to Ozzy as an artist. That bitch couldn't care less about Iommi etc. Sharon Osbourne always was, is and always shall be full of shit. The reunion thing with Ozzy...nothing great came out of that. Ozzy was back in the band, and Sharon and Ozzy recently sued Tony Iommi to get a share of the Sabbath name.
Too bad Tony Martin did 'Cross Purpopes' and 'Forbidden' with them, just so they could finish their record contract with I.R.S. He didn't know at the time, but a reunion with Ozzy was in the works since Costa Mesa 1992. Ozzy's voice and stagepresence was shot allready during the reunion stuff back in 1997. What did we get from the reunion, just a mediocre live album, with 2 new songs. They kept saying they were gonna do an album, but we never saw that.
@greekthanos Glenn Hughes? Come on, he is a good singer, but not for Sabbath. The album he did was good, but he didnt even want to be in Sabbath. It was a last-minute decision to call 'Seventh Star' a Sabbath album, due to pressure from Don Arden and the record company. Glenn didn't like it, but went along with it, since Iommi is his friend. Dio was a far greater singer than Hughes, and especially Ozzy. Dio might be dead, but has outshined Ozzy as a legendary vocalist a long time ago.
It doesn't matter who's the best among Ozzy, Ronnie and Martin. We have Iommi here. He is the best. Sabbath is Sabbath, no matter the singer. Just enjoy the music.
@esquilocanadense Right on dude, Ozzy, Gillan, Dio, Martin, Hughes, Gillen, they are all great! Sabbath is Sabbath and Tony Iommi is a musical machine!
I miss this line-up of Black Sabbath... How many great Sabbath songs have never been written because they made this idiotic mistake of reuniting with Ozzy so he could make them do nothing, nothing, and more nothing for almost 15 years now? At least we have Heaven & Hell now, thank the metal gods for that.
this is not ozzy. its tony martin. he and dio were the 2 main singers among several while ozzy had his solo career goin. personally i think tony and dio are best but ozzy had a style only he could produce. for all of them tony iommi certainly kept them sounding good.
Wow! I forgot all about this video. I shot it with director Mark Weiss at the Orpheum in Boston in the middle of blizzard. that's my daughter in the opening. She's 20 now.
this sabbath era is incredibly underrated just look what wicked shit came from this! cant stop listening to cross purposes, headless cross, eternal idol .. hell! even forbidden ! tony martin and tonny iommi rock!
This is what Tony Martin is best suited for, power ballads. Not real Sabbath songs, his voice is too polished for Sabbath sludge. Mean that in a good way.
to tell the truth this isn's black sabbath .how could they be i mean most of the members of the tony martin era are not original and that's why the music of this black sabbath era is so different
It is Sabbath, only because the core and soul of the band, Tony Iommi, was still a member. He's the one that comes up with all the music, most of the time. But it is a vastly different style, still Sabbath, only a "different" Sabbath.
I love this song! It came out my senior year in high school. At that point I was just starting to get into the other versions of Sabbath other than the Ozzy/Dio eras. Tony is absolutely the master of the clean/heavy guitar transitions in his songs.
sabbath , my style of music, brings memorys bk. i am glad he still abouth. u carry on and the rest of the 60tis,as long as u can, ignore the negative coments, they have not seen u and listen to u probely wd
I have said it many times before on these videos of the Sabbath singes who are not Ozzy and Dio....."A True Sabbath fan....is a fan who will love their music no mattter who is on vocals!"
Same here. Now after a few listens, Cross purposes is one of my favorite Tony Martin era sabbath albums. Cross of thorns is the best song on the album.
Eh, it was an alright album. My favorite Martin era is Headless Cross. If you like Cross Purposes, don't get the Live Cross Purposes. His voice was breaking during that concert.
My favorite metal band , the masters of reality , BLACK SABBATH with Tony Martin, I like him more than Dio but nobody is better than the original, ozzy, he's the best !!! \m/
Cross purposes is a good album.I don't want to compare it with other stuffs;different times, different singers, different inspirations...but always great music.
Fail,This is AFTER Dehumanizer, and Tony Martin Almost sounds exactly like Dio. Tony Martin is a FANTASTIC SINGER and the longest lasting singer next to Ozzy.
"*sigh* boo me all you want but Sabbath was WAY better with ozzy. I never liked Sabbath with Dio. It...it just isn't the same. "
jesus christ. Sabbath fans are easily the most picky fucking fans of any band I have ever seen in my life. Instead of just enjoying it for what it is, they have to start arguments like which singer is better or how one lineup isn't Sabbath when the other is. If you can't enjoy the rest of it, you aren't a Sabbath fan, you're an Ozzy fan.
jesus...i bought all the sabbath albums but never warmed up to the non ozzy/dio ones...this has convinced me i need to give the others a listen--hes a really powerful singer! :D
Guys good music is good music. Sabbath did produce quality work with all of their singers. On the other hand music tastes are subjective. Personally I really like Tony Martin era and I believe that Headless Cross and TYR are two of the best Sabbath albums in their whole career. I really like Seventh Star with Hughes, Heaven And Hell with Dio is a tremendous album and Born Again rocks!!! Ozzy era is of course the classic Sabbath...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I've seen live videos of Tony Martins singing Dio and Ozzy era songs and he seems to do a good job, I just can't listen to any of his albums with Sabbath. It's not the heavy Sabbath that I know.
Actually man, The Tony Martin era Sabbath is the Heaviest Darkest era of them all.
Just listen to Eternol Idol, I Witness, Immaculate Deception, Headless Cross, and Virtual Death.
Those are like, the heaviest Darkest songs I've ever heard out of Black Sabbath, and we all seem to forgeting that Black Sabbath got together to write Scary Music.
I like Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, and Virtual Death. What the fuck is wrong with you pricks? I get 6 thumbs down? I wasn't even negative in that post you dumb asses.
maybe not the heaviest, but most beautiful :) I love BS with Ozzy, I love BS with Dio, I love BS with Tony M. with the last one are the most melodic ( in my opinion, of course )
Music is subjective. Therefore it cracks me up how people on these posts start throwing mud saying one person is better than another! Tony Martin was my favorite sab singer (though I loved them all) he did the best job filling everyones shoes. Imagine the job "OK, we need to you fill the shoes of five singers over 20+ years... can you do it?" I saw him live so many times it was amazing how well he sang all the other eras...
You got a good point there. Tony Martin is really the ideal Sabbath singer because of two reasons 1. He does a great job filling out the shoes of Ozzy, Dio and Gillan 2. he has a great voice that really suited the darker tone of the later Sab albums.
Honestly, I think Tony Martin was Sabbath's best singer. He really is extremely talented. Hes definately better than Ozzy, I think we can all agree that he's better than Glenn Hughes, and he has an even greater range than Dio, and just as powerful a voice.
But in spite of that, I agree they're are best off with Ozzy. The others are all more talented, but you just gotta have Ozzy in Sabbath
THERE'S your best Sabbath singer. His voice sucks now, but he was at his full potential when he was with Sabbath, and he sure showed it. And he beats Tony Martin, but Tony's so great he follows up pretty closely.
And I'd just like to say that it always amazes me how Iommi always seems to stand so rigidly when Sabbath are making some of the most awesome metal in the world.
Cross Purposes was also the first Sabbath record I heard. It wasn't too good though. I witness, Cross Of Thorns, and Hand That Rocks The Cradle were the only good songs. Now TYR that was a great cd and the best with Martin imo.
Great Martin era cd, great song. Too bad he just didn't seem to have any good days when he was live. Or the days he was fine ended up getting bad recording quality.
I saw this show in high school in February 1994, one of Sabbath's tightest line-ups no doubt. I still remember tons of underage (under 18, that means) chicks for some reason doing strip-teases during Bobby Rondinelli's drum solo and being tossed out of the arena in Chicago. I forever became a fan of him after that, the guy is a legend. I also own part of the exact drumkit he used on that tour, now! Great album, too!!
I've seen a few bootlegs of Tony Martin and he's much better than on Cross Purposes Live, especially on the ones from the Headless Cross and TYR tours. Shame on most of the Cross Purpose tour he seemed to disappoint
Yeah...on studio albums Toni is great....but in a live setting he always disappoints me; he never gets anywhere the high notes and is twisting the vocals on the crucial spots. Anyone can be a world class singer with the help of modern studio techniques. Look up whatever live clip of Toni here on U tube and you´ll see what I mean.
Ever seen "Cross Purposes Live"??? It´s so horrible....

dzamija922 2 years ago 2
I love this song! It came out my senior year in high school. At that point I was just starting to get into the other versions of Sabbath other than the Ozzy/Dio eras. Tony is absolutely the master of the clean/heavy guitar transitions in his songs.

in my personal opinion
1.gillan
2.martin
3.dio
4.gillen
5.hughes
6.ozzy
mrfenderbenderman 2 years ago
odd that someone would put gillan has first
WRATH4214721125150 2 years ago
why is that odd?
sabbath fit around him like a glove and his screams on born again could not have been better,
i put that as in vocal ability by the way,
i much prefer ozzy to dio and hughes,
yet i know hes not half the singer.

Same here. Now after a few listens, Cross purposes is one of my favorite Tony Martin era sabbath albums. Cross of thorns is the best song on the album.
JanoSeishu420 3 years ago
Eh, it was an alright album. My favorite Martin era is Headless Cross. If you like Cross Purposes, don't get the Live Cross Purposes. His voice was breaking during that concert.

What the hell is this? No wonder they dumped this loser singer and reunited with Dio for Dehumanizer. This song is terrible!

I like Tony Martin, he's fucking great.
ivnvir 3 years ago 3
Fail,This is AFTER Dehumanizer, and Tony Martin Almost sounds exactly like Dio. Tony Martin is a FANTASTIC SINGER and the longest lasting singer next to Ozzy.
JackassHighSchool123 3 years ago
His voice was strongest on this song than the rest of the album. His voice seems strained a bit on most of the other ones.
Amazing song. I luckily managed to pick up this album for $8 a few months ago, and the discontinued IRS edition or whatever it was, nonetheless.

jesus christ. Sabbath fans are easily the most picky fucking fans of any band I have ever seen in my life. Instead of just enjoying it for what it is, they have to start arguments like which singer is better or how one lineup isn't Sabbath when the other is. If you can't enjoy the rest of it, you aren't a Sabbath fan, you're an Ozzy fan.

tony martin perfectly fit sabbath, all of his cd's are worthy of the sabbath name, and he when he sang every other era of sabbath he did great!

He is not the ideal singer for Sabbath, his live performances leave much to be desired, he has admitted he struggles w/his voice live.

Ozzy era is of course the classic Sabbath...
dikigor0s3 4 years ago
Technically Ray Gillen was the best Sabbath singer....Tony Martin is great too, with a great soul in his voice.
rideon77 4 years ago
I think that Tony Martin can deliever anything that is thrown on him. After all he had to sing songs from every Sabbath era:)

I've seen live videos of Tony Martins singing Dio and Ozzy era songs and he seems to do a good job, I just can't listen to any of his albums with Sabbath. It's not the heavy Sabbath that I know.
Terminxman 4 years ago
Actually man, The Tony Martin era Sabbath is the Heaviest Darkest era of them all.
Just listen to Eternol Idol, I Witness, Immaculate Deception, Headless Cross, and Virtual Death.
Those are like, the heaviest Darkest songs I've ever heard out of Black Sabbath, and we all seem to forgeting that Black Sabbath got together to write Scary Music.

maybe not the heaviest, but most beautiful :) I love BS with Ozzy, I love BS with Dio, I love BS with Tony M. with the last one are the most melodic ( in my opinion, of course )
saszer20 4 years ago
Music is subjective. Therefore it cracks me up how people on these posts start throwing mud saying one person is better than another! Tony Martin was my favorite sab singer (though I loved them all) he did the best job filling everyones shoes. Imagine the job "OK, we need to you fill the shoes of five singers over 20+ years... can you do it?" I saw him live so many times it was amazing how well he sang all the other eras...
CreditSecretsBible 4 years ago
You got a good point there. Tony Martin is really the ideal Sabbath singer because of two reasons 1. He does a great job filling out the shoes of Ozzy, Dio and Gillan 2. he has a great voice that really suited the darker tone of the later Sab albums.

Ozzy really wasn't a "good" singer, he just had a good voice for Sabbath.
blacksabbathmetal 4 years ago 2
wtf? are u talking about Ozzy is the best!
jaybrabant 4 years ago
Of course, an ignorant Ozzy purist has to message me. Ozzy was not a good technical singer. He had a good voice, but that doesn't make him talented.
blacksabbathmetal 4 years ago 2
Seriously, I love it when they say, ozzy is the best! He wasn't that great, Dio is way better than Ozzy and they hate it.
bunbury150 4 years ago 2
Honestly, I think Tony Martin was Sabbath's best singer. He really is extremely talented. Hes definately better than Ozzy, I think we can all agree that he's better than Glenn Hughes, and he has an even greater range than Dio, and just as powerful a voice.
But in spite of that, I agree they're are best off with Ozzy. The others are all more talented, but you just gotta have Ozzy in Sabbath
ZZFerdinand 4 years ago
Oh god, how could I forget?
IAN GILLAN!!!
ZZFerdinand 4 years ago
I must admit that this one is a good one...hard for me to say it!!!
Ozzy and Dio rules!

VictimofAtkins 4 years ago
Cross Purposes was also the first Sabbath record I heard. It wasn't too good though. I witness, Cross Of Thorns, and Hand That Rocks The Cradle were the only good songs. Now TYR that was a great cd and the best with Martin imo.
UltMitSinner78 4 years ago
Great Martin era cd, great song. Too bad he just didn't seem to have any good days when he was live. Or the days he was fine ended up getting bad recording quality.

I saw this show in high school in February 1994, one of Sabbath's tightest line-ups no doubt. I still remember tons of underage (under 18, that means) chicks for some reason doing strip-teases during Bobby Rondinelli's drum solo and being tossed out of the arena in Chicago. I forever became a fan of him after that, the guy is a legend. I also own part of the exact drumkit he used on that tour, now! Great album, too!!

i think on other shows he was incredible live, but on cross purposes live, he was very under the weather if i remember correctly

I've seen a few bootlegs of Tony Martin and he's much better than on Cross Purposes Live, especially on the ones from the Headless Cross and TYR tours. Shame on most of the Cross Purpose tour he seemed to disappoint
BlazeBayley 4 years ago
Yeah...on studio albums Toni is great....but in a live setting he always disappoints me; he never gets anywhere the high notes and is twisting the vocals on the crucial spots. Anyone can be a world class singer with the help of modern studio techniques. Look up whatever live clip of Toni here on U tube and you´ll see what I mean.
Ever seen "Cross Purposes Live"??? It´s so horrible....
