  • How about Bobbi Brown's pale yellow powder? Please let us know about that too.

  • that sucks to hear about the MUFE HD powder....i just got it for x-mas :(

  • what is Makeup Forever's twitter name? I did a search and I can't find them. :-(

  • This was a very helpful tutorial....you do a nice job of reviewing products!! :))

  • Do you have the laura mercier secret brightening powder? Do you think that will give a white cast too?

  • Thx for a great review that proved a good point!

  • @comfykittydesigns its called universal transluscent loose powder. It's a new release I think.

  • Hi Gina, I use BM mineral veil lightly as my setting powder and have had no problems with it. Thanks for sharing. Great info! xoxo :) Carla

  • Yay for ELF!

  • LOL it sounds like Issac is yelling "MOM!" in the background :D

  • even though you did a heavy swatch, i think that it should still show up clear. like all the other powders. its very expensive. also, the other powders that were hd did not have a problem with this white cast even when heavily swatched. i agree with your opinion 100%

  • thanx for this video it is a great help for us the ones that r looking for a good finishing powder, good one keep it goin...=]

  • Thanks for the video! I actually have a few photos of myself wearing Powderflage in which there is a definite white cast under my eyes. But then again, I haven't ruled out the possibility that I used too much on those occasions. I still love it though and use it pretty much daily.

I'm definitely going to return my MUFE HD powder! I don't hate it, but I just can't justify paying that much for pure silica powder!

P.s. If I wasn't already pre-engaged, I would probably ask Goss to be my husband

  • Gina great review!!! You are very thorough! I am not a powder fan, I can always tell when someone slathered it on and looks cakey, hoever when I do use it..rarely, I use thw ELD HD and it works great! But I will be honest the Lmercier looks great when I take pics, never had any problems.

  • the problem with bare mineral veil is that it contains cornstarch which is bad for acne prone skin, is food for the bacteria, any product that contains this ingredient i don't use. thanks great vid.

  • oooohhhh this video looks so twilight. he he.

  • I love your scientific approach to makeup reviews!

  • Wow, what a great review! :) Uh oh now I'm scared to us my MUFE HD powder. I have two sample sizes. I have the ELF one, but now I want to get the Laura Mercier one you showed in your blog. You're such a great reviewer! You make videos no one else has! Love you channel so much! Thank you so much for taking the time to do some research on this! <3

  • how about the one from Coastal Scents... one... do you have that one...?

  • I think Isaac wants something. :P

  • Ugh...I ADORE the HD powder and use it very sparingly but will have to take my own photos to determine if it casts white based on my application. I'll also have to check out the BM Well Rested as I use that under my eyes too. Thanks so much for doing this! xo

  • Very interesting test findings. I have the mineral veil & am glad to know it won't leave a weird white cast. I'll have to give the Laura Mercier a try. Thanks for making this comparison for us Gina! xoLiz

  • MUFE needs to do a recall! lol i have so much of that crap left and never reach for it because it always gives a white cast.

  • u r amazing...i saw your review of the maybeline fit me foundation and you where soo right about the oxidation I tried it on my hand and it turned orange on me...great call I think i ll stick with my Revlon colorstay =)

  • This has happend to me too! Under my eyes, because I set the concealer with the MUFE HD powder. If even proffesional makeupartist uses it "wrong" it must be the product that is the problem? It doesnt look white on, just on photos! So how can I know that I have used the right amount? Cant take a photo to check every time:)

  • I was wondering about the ELF powder when I saw Goss MUA's video. Thanks for showing!

  • Very helpful! Now I know why I look so crazy in a couple of family photos! LOL

  • @Babydoll8528 omg LOL!

  • maybe there's a flash white cast because you or the makeup artist had put on too much of it? i heard that youre only supposed to put only a little of the powder over our foundation.

  • Tell us more about the maybelline superstay and the age rewind combo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great video! thanks!!

  • Thanks Gina! I have the hd powder and I am a photographer and its definitely noticeable in pictures. I had no idea Laura Mercier came out with one but I will be checking it out asap! xoxo

  • Great video, really interesting and good to know! x

  • You should try the coastal scents silica spheres, that's what I use. :(

  • You should try the coastal scents silica spheres, that's what I use. :(

  • I will put my MUFE thoughts to rest now, I saw Wayne's video and now this.. excellent that you also provided some alternatives. MUFE is not sold here in Sweden but elf is and I have - and love - their HD powder. Will simply keep using and loving it! :D

  • I read that silica is super absorbent. Does this mean I can't/shouldn't use it on dry skin.. or just use it extremely sparingly?

  • @jbarum I have dry skin and I use it, just don't use much, or only put it on areas that may be shinier than most of your face (tzone).

  • @Whereswaldoxx I figured.. But I'm just so paranoid because my skin is so dry. But hear this HD powder (silicia) is amazing. So it's a double edge sword.

  • Oh damn! I remember that picture of Nicole Kidman. Poor girl.

Oh well.. thank you for the heads up cause is us MUFE HD under my eyes everyday.

  • gina, the swatch is actually a bad way to show this product. You dont use that much of it.... if you do see white then you applied too much of it. I use this product everyday and never had an issue.I also use it on clients all the time for bridals etc and there pictures come out great! Its a amazing product to use. But if you use too much it wont be. MUFE makes products for stage, fashion, and photog. I think you should give it another chance and apply less. :)

  • @aebeidler HI! another lovely mua and I have just been discussing this very thing. I showed a photo with proper application, and results are dfifferent (on blog). However, I think this is still telling as to which powders are better options for flash photography, especially since most people buying and using these products are not professionals. I also 100% agree that it can boil purely down to application, but I would still err on the side of caution and buy a different HD powder.

  • @ginabinawina99 have you tried smashbox's new hd powder? it is even more finely milled! really smooth! Havnt tried it on myself yet though! Maybe I should today lol

  • @aebeidler Also, I want to point out that I was fair in swatching all of them heavily, so it's not that I was just intensely swatching the mufe and alienating it out.

  • @aebeidler i agree with you. i use this everyday and have no problem with it all. first, you DON'T cake on the powder or anything. you use the faintest amount on a fluffy fluffy powder brush.

  • Sure, I actually like to use a very small brush, like MAC #225 or #109 for powdering. I never blast powder all over the face with a large brush... I use a very small brush so I can control it and only place it right where it is needed. Most of the time that is under the eyes, around the nose, and lightly in the t-zone.. I leave the rest of the skin 'dewy'... unless they are oily, then I use oil control powder just about all over the face.. I don't use HD powder on oily skin.. HTH :)

  • Thank you so much for sharing!

  • totally... in my experience this powder blurs imperfections like no other.. which is crucial for a lot of my clients.. you need the smallest smallest smallest amount which is still effective but WON'T look white when hit with a flash.. as far as those red carpet mishaps.. shame on those MUA's who didn't test out thier products first! lol ...I think MUFE should make sure they are telling people how to use it properly too!

  • @omgfuggeniloveit I'd love it if you shared with us a preferred brush with these types of powders. I can imagine a very loose (or lacking in density) brush would be optimal? Maybe a fan brush? I like something similar to the mac 129 for loose powders. On me, having dry skin, I learned FAST not to use much powder.. LOL

  • Also, it would be better if people start teaching people how to use the product correctly (which does in fact yield BEAUTIFUL results)... instead of using it incorrectly and thus having a skewed review/misleading results...

  • @omgfuggeniloveit You are right, (haha it seems both of us are right just coming from different perspectives and I love that!) I still think the LM wins over the MUFE, but I don't want ppl to assume I dislike the mufe, just feel and always have felt there were other options. I will say I should have titled "may" cause. I'm curious now to do a super light dusting and see what i come up w/ . Just, to me, if a Makeup artist on the red carpet could make this mistake I imagine more than not could.

  • haha I can hear Isaac in the BG! Lordy I have no idea why MUFE was so defensive and bothered denying it because it's so easy to test. Every makeup artist knows that there are certain things you don't use with flash photography....it's not that it's a bad product. It just shouldn't be used if you plan on taking pictures that day/night....sheesh! xo

  • I've been using it since it came out and i do makeup professionally.. it has NEVER done this to me becuase I use it properly... you are right, for consumers it is best to take away the chance for error OR just teach them how to properly use it. But so much hype around this and its very misleading.. Plus, "HD" refers to film, not flash photos but that is another whole topic.. bottom line, education is crucial with any product... for anyone using it, if it looks white, USE LESS. simple!!

  • @omgfuggeniloveit i agree. i've been using this since it came out too and i'm no professional. it's obvious you don't use too much of it. i like this thing and it never makes me look white or grey or whatever. plus, i'm kind of skeptical about the swatches. i did this myself and used camera flash and saw no whiteness. i know that gina was using even amounts from each powder, but you really don't that much for the mufe one.

  • @omgfuggeniloveit oops i mean, using even amounts among each powder isn't really fair for the mufe one, because you really don't need a lot of it on your face. so among those swataches, mufe hd powder could have been swatched later. thanks for the video though gina!

  • Dang.....I just applied MUFE HD powder. Great....I want my $40 back.

  • Thats so strange! I wear the Makeup forever hd powder everyday and have never had that problem lol

  • Thank you for this! I am a photographer, so I love this info to pass on!

  • I have the makeup forever hd powder, and did the same thing Wayne did, and it does do this!!! It was horrible, I'm returning it to Sephora =(.

  • really helpful thanx

  • @BeautyByGeorgia ahh! actually, if you check out the blogpost, I took different photos at different angles and at some angles powderflage showed up a little bit, but in comparison to the mufe maybe the mufe dwarfs its white cast because the mufe is so bright. xox!

  • Really helpful video, thanks!

  • Have you been watching Wendy Williams? LOL

  • this was so helpful!! i have the laura mercier, mufe, and the elf one so now i know which is best for photos. thanks so so much for making this video :)

    xo Leigh Ann

  • Thanks really helpful!!! Wish you would have included MAC. Next time!

  • I'm pretty bummed about the MUFE powder..I have that & just need to use it up for the sake of having purchased it...but gaaaahhhh!

    Wayne Goss=yummy LOL

As usual..totally appreciate your time to do this!

  • How do you think the Laura Mercier invisible loose setting powder compares to the translucent loose setting powder? I'm kind of bummed now, because I bought the translucent a few months ago.

  • You solved a mystery for me... Years ago I went on a cruise, on the formal night I got all dressed up, my make looked good. I thought. Then after returning home, the photos were scary! Seriously, I looked like a ghost. I had used Bare Minerals mineral veil. I now know that was the problem. I thought I had looked like that in person, how embarrassing. Thanks.

  • @dgmlmax OMGosh! The VERY same thing happened to me on a cruise with mineral veil! I'm not kidding--my husband and I dressed especially to take some pictures on our own and found a random person to take our picture. I was so excited because of our outfits and the background we chose (plus it was a good hair day)--and the pictures were very pretty except for MY FACE!!! I had always used all Bare Minerals products but had added their CONCEALER to my routine and that was it or the Mineral Veil!

  • What a great idea! I watched Wayne's video and got a huge laugh out of the photo--but it's nice to know it's mostly the MUFE one. Thanks! :)

  • MUFE should allow costumers to exchange that product for something else....I hate that I spent so much money on a powder that now i will never use....C'mon ppl when arn't we taking photos!

  • Why do companies lie ffs they know we will catch them out in the end :0) xxxJoolsxxx

  • @BarrysDaughter ya!! I mean, it was made for HD video and they supposedly didn't claim it's for photography, so why not just admit it? Just say, well, it's an amazing product, but not good with flash photos. I didn't get the point of lying.

  • @ginabinawina99 it's guilt!!! they made themselves look like fools to be honest!!

  • OK, I have not had time, but I saw Goss's video. Now you, and now I am curious beyond belief. Yesterday I would have let it go, but now I have to go and see what en hell happened to these poor celebrities. If they looked anything like the picture Goss took, I can IMAGINE that MUFE might lose some sales. Going to google it. LOL People are so funny... and cats too...

  • After seeing Wayne's video I stopped using the Elf assuming it would be the same (not that people are taking my picture!) but I'm glad to know it's pretty safe. Thanks Gina!

  • love experiment keep them coming.......

  • This was really helpful. Appreciate your quick, but complete review. Uma Thurman was another star that had the white under eye problem. Hers was really bad.

  • I'm using the HD from Make up forever and I haven't had the sensation that it looks too white...

  • I'm an NC50 and the ELF one looks like chalk on dark skin, the only one that I heard doesn't have a white cast is the MAC prep & prime powder.

  • I heard a lot of good things about the Laura Mercier one. i'm on a budget though so right now I'd go for the ELF but this was a very revealing video, Gina, thanks!

  • I just can't believe that! I mean how was that not tested!!!!! well now I'm curious about the HD line that NYX put out:/ if I had it here I would test it out

  • Hi! Wayne Goss did a video about this.

  • Woohoo for elf being BETTER than mufe!

  • wow!

  • Crazy, I would have never thought that.

  • Wonderful video! Thank you for the information! Have you heard about Mally's Porless Face Defender - she states it's the first translarent finisher ever :)

  • I tried to take flash pictures with the ELf HD. It has a little bit of a white cast, but it's not that bad. Just don't put too much. But it could be because I am light.

  • Thanks for posting this video, it was really helpful! Do you think the Eve Pearl HD powder will have the same problem as Makeup forever?

  • Thanks for posting this video. It was very helpful!

  • This is a great video, very informative and what a great way to inform one consumer to another...of course MUFE is going to say that their product does not cause white casitng I really dislike that powder, I have been absolutely amazed at the quality and results of the ELF HD powder blew my socks off! The only down fall is that not alot of products in the huge box but then again its only $6.00 compared to MUFE which is about 40 Euros over here in Germany grr...any idea abt macs P+P?

  • ahahahahh I heard ( im gonna Guess Issac ) Meowing at you in the backround ahahah to cute!! Wow thats Shocking how Bad that makeup is.... Its soooo White!! Poor Celebs lol. thanks for the info!

  • kewl experiment

  • i loveee the laura mercier one!! yay :)

  • Thanks for the heads up on this... Very nice to know.

    Take care...Audrey

  • why is it after everyone raves about the HD powder and after I buy it, noone likes it anymore (I guess will be part of "don't believe the hype now" *sad face* )

  • Great video! Do you know if Mac Prep & prime does the same??

  • I <3 Isaac and so is my Priscilla. You can see her in some of my videos. Great video on HD info!

  • Curious if MAc Prep and Prime will do the same??? Does anyone know?

  • i wonder if M.A.C's prep & prime does? Does anyone know?

  • @lillerella gossmakeupartist says it does not

  • so if i have 100% silicia powder then i have the mufhd powder???

  • i bought the Makeup Forever HD powder to replace my Elf HD for a wedding i was in, and ended up having white streaks all over my face in all the flash photos!!!! so embarrassing! if you're looking to invest, just stick with the affordable Elf brand!!

  • Comment removed

  • I love your science projects!

  • Great video and info! I wonder if the MAC HD powder does the same thing?

  • I'm surprised that being an HD powder made for pictures.. MUFE didn't noticed these results.

  • @summershine22 HD powder is made for video, not photographs.

  • Great. I have a full thing of the MUFE HD powder. Guess I better keep my butt off the red carpet.

  • Excellent video!

  • hahah, is that Isaac in the backround?

  • awesome :)

  • uh-oh,

the MUA @ sephora used the MUFE setting powder all over my face for my graduation portraits. :|

  • Hey! I found a dupe for the mufe hd setting powder and it's the silicon spheres frmo coastal scents for $3.75 for an entire jar and i use it everyday and it's amazing, please get it and make a review on it? i guarantee you'll love it

  • Great experiment! Thanks for doing this one. I love Wayne & I heard hes coming to the US =)

  • So glad you did that Gina! I was wondering the same thing but didn't have time (no, I was just too lazy!!!) to do the leg work. You're awesome. Interesting that the MUFE was the worst! I wonder if they will be changing the formula. I think they should!

  • UMA THURMAN WAS ANOTHER ONE

  • Thanks for doing this for us Gina. Do you think that the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder would show up white in pictures? It is a similar concept to the Benefit Powderflage but I guess it's all about the ingredients. You would have thought that a company as big and pro oriented as MUFE would have done that type of testing themselves and at this point I think they need to cut their losses and either say they have a great product that is not good for photography or reformulate.

  • LOL -- I hear Isaac in the background!

Thanks for this little test -- it was very telling!

  • i love gossmakeupartist!

  • Isaac in the background whining. :)

  • @everydaygrace2000 yep!! LOL and doing his jump at the door opening tricks, too! He either wanted brad in the other room, or more likely he wanted out where the treats are ;c)

  • If it looks white, you used too much... it isn't the powder, its the application...

  • @omgfuggeniloveit that's true, but if there's a powder that doesn't do it even with user error (like consumers not professional mua's) why not get the better option over the MUFE one.

  • @omgfuggeniloveit Also, I'd like to point out that, even if you apply it lightly and it is completely invisible on you in real life (all of these powders were invisible b4 flash), Silica is what glass is made out of which is extremely reflective, so I can imagine flash photography picking up on this no matter how gingerly you are at applying it.

  • Great test! I have natural "white" raccoon eyes. I have to add color to my under eye area or I photograph looking like I used the powder. Took a clever dermatologist to point it out to me. That and a huge co-pay, lol! :D

  • Have you tried the Mac Invisible powder?

  • @mistylovesmakeup ya the prep n prime? I owned it last year but exchanged it as I preferred other powders to it at the time. It has a mix of silica, corn starch and a few other ingredients, so it may come up similar to what the elf did, or around that. That's my guess based on which ingredients cause the flash white cast issue.

  • @ginabinawina99 I had to look it up...I have the Pro set invisible powder that I love, but I never have tested it in pictures. Is it the same as the prep n prime?

  • @mistylovesmakeup ooh!! I'm not sure? i'll look up and see if i can find the ingredients

  • @ginabinawina99 don't go through any trouble, i can look it up when I get home.

  • great review Sherlock! :-))

  • can you do a video just on photoshoot makeup?

    Would help soo much!

  • Man this stinks.. I have this lol and it was a splurge for me. Ah well that is why i love your videos!! Always great information. I will have to remember to not use it if I plan on taking any pictures.

  • I used it on my daughter's make-up on her 16th birthday and as much as I love MUF yes it does leave a white cast, you must use such a little amound and blend, blend, blend. I will not use it when I know pictures will be taken.

  • great video!

  • i looked this up on line too- if you think about it silica is found in glass making why would not reflect?glad the LM did not create a white flash- hubby and i go to san deigo every for past 15 yrs-we sign our books met people that enjoy our work- people will want to take pictures with us and since the beginning if mineral makeup OMG THE UGLY PICTURES- my somewhat normal looking face with "bear" minerals looked like a albino elephant man! i tell people NO flash due to health reasons LOLx shelly

  • What are the best foundations for picture-taking? (that don't cause a flashback/white cast)

  • @LoveDance81 mm I sense another experiment coming up!! ;cD

  • @ginabinawina99 Yay!!!

  • ommmgg amazingg! totally wanted Make up forever HD but now... NO WAY!

  • Thanks for doing this comparision. I've have a sample sized MUFE HD powder. I really liked it at first, but then I looked at some photos from a friend's wedding and I noticed the white cast. I'm so glad I did not waste my money on the full sized. I'm going to try the laura mercier one instead.

  • This is so sad I love the the hd powder. But thanks soooo much for doing this. I will check out the Laura mercier one.

  • Wow! I've been wearing the MUFE a lot lately but never happened to take a picture while wearing it. I love it but I'll make sure not to use it whenever I'm going to take pictures since I'm very tan haha

  • I love when you do videos like this! Thanks so much!!

  • Thanks for the information Gina! Stacie :)

  • i have the mufe 1 and every time i take pictures i literally have a white cast on my face no matter how much or little i use

  • i am so taking mufe hd out of my kit...

  • i have a sample size of MUFE hd powder and i noticed it makes my face look kinda grayish

  • @21vanilla you pry applied too much. you only use a tiny tiny bit

  • @aebeidler no i usually apply a little bit since i have kinda dry skin...maybe it depends on skin tone and texture or idk cuz i have the mac one and i prefer that one

  • @21vanilla ooo dry skin can def alter the look :( I have never used the mac but heard great things! isnt it funny how products can be awesome or not so hot depending on the person?? to each there own right :)

  • gina!! you're becoming my makeup library. i rely on you more than makeup alley! =D

  • Love it Gina nd u look pretty

  • omg this was a really good idea to test. I was thinking about getting the Make up forever HD powder cuz i love their foundation. Yeah not gonna happen now! Thanks!

  • Wow! who would have known. btw I love that you tested this....Props to you...

  • Great video .... This was super helpful! Do you recommend the Benefit Powerflauge? As a good powder to set your undereye concealer?

  • Wow.. that's ridiculous! Why the heck is "HD" in the name then??? :O Thanks for this.
