While Pro Bowl selections of offensive lineman might not be the only way in which to evaluate the quality of pass protection a quarterback had, it does give us some indication of just how many quality players both quarterbacks had blocking for them.
I feel that Young received the benefit of slightly better pass protection during the course of his career. Therefore, it is Montana who played with slightly worse pass protection over the course of his career.
Blocking Support Montana played with a total of nine Pro Bowl offensive lineman selections during the 13 season in which he saw moderate playing time. I excluded 1979 as well as 1991-92 for lack of playing time. Young played with a total of 11 Pro Bowl offensive lineman selections during the nine season in which he saw moderate playing time. I excluded 1985 1987-90 & 1999 due to lack of playing time.
Joe Montana: 63 carries for 310 yards (4.9 YPC) and two touchdowns.
Steve Young: 82 carries for 506 yards (6.2 YPC) and 7 touchdowns.
While Steve Young did have 19 more carries than Montana, he was more productive in terms of rushing yards per carry and touchdown frequency.

Steve Young: 722 carries for 4,239 yards (5.8 YPC) and 43 touchdowns.
This one isn't even remotely close. Steve Young gained 2,572 more yards and averaged 2.2 more yards per carry. He also scored 23 more touchdowns in the process.
Ummm, yea 49ers r grate and all, but anyone know the name of the song from 3:08 to 4:01? I love all those montage-y type of NFL songs and I need to know the name of them please
Technically he got his 3rd. He was with the 49ers in the late 80s just on the bench. This is why the 1989 49ers were perhaps the best team of all-time; they had a Hall of Fame QB sitting on the bench because he wasn't good enough to start over another Hall of Fame QB. Quite a phenomenal story.
Your being over technical, I was referring to his winning his first SB as a Starting QB which is what Steve Young was referring to in the video. And he's right QB are judged about how they do in big games. And how many championships they win.
@PITTSBURGHESE86 Nah, '84 was better, '89 lost to the rams who they beat in the NFC championship later that year, the '84 team would've been undefeated if not for a stupid referee call during a game with Pittsburgh, besides, they had injuries to some important players and still went 15-1.
'84 team didn't have Rice though. It's hard to argue against a Hall of Fame QB sitting on the bench behind another Hall of Fame QB, and a Hall of Fame WR. Actually I can see arguing either way.
@PITTSBURGHESE86 Exactly, they didn't need a WR like Rice to win, they had a talented depth chart, like I said with the injuries, Ronnie Lott got injured for a few games, but the defense didn't suffer without him. Besides, they shut down Dan Marino in his prime during SB XIX, that was a all-time great offense.
you know what going into bradshaws last year he had 210 td and 210 ints and threw 2 tds in his last season. the guys had horrible. bradshaws stats. 1st season 6 td-22ints 2nd season 13td-22ints. this guy was not an accurate quarterback. any decent QB of that time could have won on that team.
@goodlookin41 He also played much of his career in the dead ball era. Back then, there were very few rules protecting QBs and WRs; defensive players could pretty much do anything that they wanted. Matter of fact, if you look at his year by year stats, he never throw more than 20 TDs in a season until after the major rule changes of 1978.
It's simply amazing that the 49ers had two Hall of Fame quarterbacks on the roster at the same time. The closest thing we've seen that's comparable was Brees-Rivers and Favre-Rodgers. However, even those tandems don't come close to Montana-Young.
All true 49er fans, and students of the game, know in their minds and hearts----that the 49ers were robbed of at least 1 Super Bowl with Steve at the helm and Joe in KC........
@JackBauer270 Really ? Montana inherited a {2 - 14} 49er Team and went on to win 4 Super Bowls. Montana handed over a 49er Team to Young, that had just won a Super Bowl 55 to 10. Young took a superb 49er Team that should have won 3 more Bowls--and won ONE. I give him credit for that, not an easy task to be sure. But they should have won more. Young was always more worried about his Stats than the team. His concussions were a result of stat watch---instead of dumping the ball !
Totally untrue. Montana handed over a 49ers team that had LOST the NFC championship to the Giants, and had NO running game. For Young to take the 1991 team to 10 wins was a near miraculous feat -- and then he won 2 MVPs and a SB MVP afterwards.
Only a complete moron would fail to appreciate having one of the all-time greats at QB following up the career of the all-time greatest QB ever.
@JackBauer270 Wait a minute, Steve Young inherited a superbowl team? Steve Young didn't begin as a starter until 1991, where there were no Ronnie Lott, no Fred Dean, a whole new secondary, no Roger Craig, and most importantly no Bill Walsh. Had Bill Walsh been with Steve Young, the 49ers would have easy won two more superbowls. I am not saying that Steve is a better QB than Joe, but give Steve Young his due respect as one of the greatest QB to ever play.
I know this 1994 49er team was ranked way too low (#16) on this "All Time Best Super Bowl Team" list. I guarantee this team would've defeated ANY team that was ranked above them!
Brent Jones is wrong; they did shake hands it just wasn't shown in this video; back when this game was played Montana told a reporter afterwards that him and Young made small talk
@TheGatorfan93 No way man. Joe Montana was the greatest and he put the issue to rest in 1994. Joe single-handedly beat the best team in the NFL, not to mention 4 super bowl championships
Fun fact: Steve said they should trot off J.J. Stokes!!! Funny thing: Stokes wasn't drafted until 1995!!!!!! The year after the 49ers '94 Super Bowl year!!!!
Yeah Joe was a HOFer but he benefited alot from Bill Walshs system and all the pro bowlers around him. Steve actually had more passing tittles better carrer completion pct. and better carrer QB rating, had a stronger arm and was one of the best runners for QBs ever. I dont care about rings dos'nt mean shit, yeah he was key in the clutch, but his team was great hes top 5 but not top 3 of all time
@MrCjp37 dude joe had no int in the playoffs and the most mvps in superbowl history 3 times and never lost in a superbowl and more comebacks so that wat makes joe better then steve but steve is the top 5 QB ever
@longstratt Yeah thats impresive, like I said he did'nt make mistakes. But seriously hows he gonna throw int's? his receivers always had a step on the DB 's, he never had to really to squeez anything in there cause his guys were always open due to the system they were in and of course they were faster then the guys covering them. Look at the highlights of Joe throwing the ball and then look at Elway, Marino and Manning. Joe threw a lot of short stuff and his guys would take it to end zone
@longstratt If I said Steve Young was 5th he may be #6 but Johnny U., Steve young and Favre are 5 6 and 7 whatever oder you want to put em. You have to remember Walshes system was brillant and he learned some of that from Paul Brown. Early 80's no one figured it out, by the time teams caught on it did'nt matter cause they had Rice and Taylor by then and no one could stop them. Rice should have won MVP in 89 they alwasy give it to the QB
Steve Young thinks the monkey is off his back. He better look again. Someday, his grandkids are going to ask him what it's like to live in Joe Montana's shadow. Joe Montana transcended the sport itself, much like Muhammed Ali transcended boxing. Steve can pretend, but he can never BE Joe Montana. It was foolish of him to even try.
I really admire Steve Young for just how he played in the shadow of Montana. I think that its a shame that people undermine Steve Young with Joe Montana. Why cant people just say that they are both Hall of Famers and both deserve adoration from the 49er fans.
Steve Young and the '94 49ers may be my favorite story ever. To see Young finally overcome the shadow of Montana, to finally get that damn monkey off his back. Wonderful.
Super - No offense...but Steve Young will never "overcome" Joe's shadow. He can't.
To this day, in the culture, the name Joe Montana is synonymous with grace under fire. Joe was like Muhammad Ali. It wasn't that he won, it's the WAY he won. Joe is San Francisco's first sweetheart. The one that got away.
Steve Young can never be anything more than the guy who tried to fill Joe's shoes. He can be forgiven, but he will never be loved like Joe.
Perhaps Young can never "overcome" Joe's shadow. But he does NOT need to be 'forgiven' for stepping in and doing his job when he was called upon. After all, he did bring the franchise its 5th ring, which was the most of any franchise until Dallas tied it a year later, and Pittsburgh later surpassed it.
SuperTugz - I think this comes down to style. I liken it to a choreographed dance, sometimes these match-ups don't seem like sports. More like a Hollywood movie. A beautiful thing to watch.
I think it's the reason nobody ever remembers Jim Plunkett. He might have won but he won ugly. His passes all looked like wounded ducks.
Of course Steve Young had talent and passion but personally, I don't think he had much style. Young had more in common with Jeff Garcia than Joe Montana.
Hey "Flaming Buttholes"....I see you only have "#2" & "#4" uploaded for this (America's Game - '94 49ers). Could u possibly upload #1, #3, & #5 if u have them? Thx, dude.
This HAS to be the most talented team in nfl history.LOOK at the talent! young,rice,taylor,jones,watters,floyd.They had on defense,stubblefield,bryant young a rookie,dent,ricky jackson.norton,woodall,hanks,davis,mcdonald, and of course deion.That's just...madness
J.J stokes wasnt even on the team that year...i think steve mixed that up a lil bit...buttt...STEVE IS THE GREATEST and lets bring the NINERS back to greatness....when excellence becomes tradition, there is no end to greatness...GO NINERS!!
Nobody else has ever played with such a burden. Steve had to endure so much and he still became one of the best. Everyone telling him hes no Joe montana and hes never gonna be great like joe. that can have a huge effect on a players Career. Confidence is everything in football and Getting girls. lol
hahah and that 98 wildcard win was pretty much a fluke...but forget favre owning young....the niners had already had their run and the packers were just a much better TEAM those days. plus holmgren knew everything possible about young and the west coast offense cuz from back when he coached in san fran....
I like Steve but JOE is the legend hands down . He made it look so easy and just think if he didn't have those injurys, and how much more he could have done .
KcltaliaPlaya doesnt know what the fuck he is talkin about! Young has the record for TDs in a SuperBowl and retired as the most accurate passer with the best QB rating and the most completions from a QB to receiver (Young to Rice), and the first and best rushing QB of all time!!!!! One of the best to play the game WITHOUT A DOUBT!
what they where talking about is that joe was with the 49rs a cali team and being a cali team like Oakland the guy in a raiders jersey supported his old cali qb more then the new cali qb steve young becuase of the respect they had for him. Though, i still don't get why he was at a cheifs-49rs game at a bar in a raiders jersey i believe what i said above was what they where trying to point out.
@mlgoscar: That fan saying "You can't beat Joe" is another person that was brainwashed by the pro-49er media into thinking that Joe Montana is the best ever. However, it was easy for the 49ers to succeed with an offense relying on slants and short passes after the rule changes that happened 32 years ago. Let's see that offense work if they never changed the rules. It probably wouldn't have.
True. But the 9ers weren't the only team that could use that offense. There were 27 other teams that could have tried it. Montana won 4 Super Bowls period! Remember, men lie, women lie....Numbers don't!!!
@gfscarface13: I don't. I know that they have 5. And, they won one after everyone's precious Montana, albeit only because DeScummolo and Policy were paying people under the table.
@a7b7c78 They won because jimmy johnson retired as cowboys head coach after the previous season, that's why they were finally able to get to the super bowl and win it, johnson wasn't there to beat the 49ers a 3rd straight year, I'm not a cowboys fan, but that's what happened.
@JM1980s: Well, I don't know if Jimmy Johnson would have made that much difference.
The dominance of the Cowboys and Niners remind me of how much the NFL sucked from 88-95. It wasn't only them, but Buffalo's 4 SB losses made it bad as well. It got better in 96 when Denver re-emerged into the league's elite and won the SB in 97 and 98. I would put those Denver teams and the 98 Vikings against those Cowboy and Niner teams any day of the week.
@forevercuz: No, without Walsh putting together a defense, they wouldn't have won SB's. This is something the Dolphins never did with Marino. Walsh did it in 1981 practically overnight.
@forevercuz Yes, Without Joe Montana as their QB, maybe the 49ers wouldn't have 4. However, without the Ronnie Lott, Fred Dean, Roger Craig, and Bill Walsh, the 49ers wouldn't have one superbowl. It is a team's sport. No one does it by himself. With the O-line blocking and Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, John Taylor, and Freddie Solomon scoring TDs, the 49ers wouldn't have won 4 superbowls. Joe is a big part in their success, but he wasn't the only part. Just ask Joe himself.
@a7b7c78 The Niners were 2 - 14 when Joe arrived. He proceeded to win 2 Super Bowls before Jerry Rice was drafted. In his last Super Bowl he threw 5 TD's and 300 yards---basically in one half. He sat out most of the second as the score grew to 55 -10. Joe Montana is not over-rated, he is perfectly rated, THE BEST EVER.
@matt75hooper: Whatever. I try to give you delusional 49er fans the truth, but if you want to keep spouting nonsense about Montana being the best ever, you can. It's a free country.
@matt75hooper: For me, I think that it was Unitas. He threw a TD pass in 47 consecutive games. He was a winner. When Dan Fouts gave his Hall of Fame induction speech in 1993, he said that the only reason that he made the Hall was because he was able to learn at the feet of the greatest QB of all-time, Johnny Unitas, who he played with for a year with San Diego in 1973.
@a7b7c78 Unitas ? OK. I can live with that. I saw Unitas for 10 years, he was a Field General. Just a footnote----you may find very interesting. When asked---Unitas said 'Montana was the best'.
Montana is the best QB ever, but don't forget they never won a SB without Ronnie Lott either. Steve Young never had a defensive player of Lott's caliber for his entire starting career.
@drwood04 49ers best point differential was during the Young years, so much for Joe's advantage defensively. Lott was awesome x 10---no question. I did not appreciate the Young years because I thought Montana should have written his own ticket after 4 Championships. There is absolutely no question in my mind Montana would have delivered 1 perhaps even 2 more Super Bowls. The core team he left behind was awesome. The 80's were far tougher than the 90's. Many HOF QB's to deal with each week.
Its not about point differential...anyone with a pulse can tell you that the 80s Niner defenses were far better than the early 90s defenses...and that was because of RONNIE LOTT, the 2nd greatest defensive player of the 80s other than Lawrence Taylor. Lott's prime ended after the 1990 season, so the Niners defense was rebuilding when Young took over. Young's offensive stats from 1991-1994 were better than any 4 year stretch that Montana put together.
@drwood04 Bottom line--No Lott, Niners still win 4 Super Bowls. No Montana, no 4 Super Bowls. Case closed. A much weaker 49er Team won their 5th Super Bowl without Lott or Montana, thus the obvious conclusion--the 49ers certainly would have won the 5th and possibly 6th Super Bowl WITH Montana at the helm. Young and the 90's 49ers had nowhere near the competition of the 80's. It seemed every other week Montana was playing a future HOF QB & strong Team...Manning and Brady now face even less.
The weakest 49er SB winner was not 1994...it was the 88 team (by far), which lost SIX games (!!) and was a Giants regular season finale win over the Jets away from not even hosting a playoff game that year. At least the 94 niner team had the best record in football for most of the season.
Therefore, your point about the 5th SB makes no sense, since the 94 49ers were significantly better than the 88 version. And the 90s had more HOF QBs in their prime than the 80s did.
"Every other week" Montana was facing a HOF QB? Give me a break. How many HOF QBs were there in the NFC in the 80s besides Montana? Wade Wilson? Danny White? Jim McMahon? Tomczak? Joe Theisman? Jay Schroeder? Doug Williams? Phil Simms? Randall Cunningham? Jim Everett?
Compare that to the 90s in the NFC....Troy Aikman and Brett Favre were each better than any 80s NFC QB except Montana...and Young faced them annually in the playoffs. Montana's QB competition was far weaker.
@drwood04 Marino.....Elway...Simms....Foutes.....Boomer....etc The guys you named would all star today, as many Teams are saddled with 4th stringers.....Lott was more valuable than Taylor. Check out each's jewelry cabinet. Steve Young was very good. If he took over a 2-14 Niner Team as Montana did, we would be asking 'Steve who ?' His Stat Watch and running versus an incompletion / dump would have gotten him injured and gone. God ! How many sacks he took to save a damn %.....
You've just lost all credibility -- like much of the mainstream media you vastly overrate offense and underrate defense. The niners won 4 SB b/c in addition to having the best QB of all time (and best WR of all time for two of them), they had no worse than the 3rd best defense in the league during their SB runs -- and that was b/c Lott was the 2nd best defensive player of the decade other than Lawrence Taylor (the real LT).
The 49ers team that Montana left after the 90 season couldn't run the ball and had its best defensive players all past their prime...plus Cofer was always a nightmare on special teams. Don't forget that Montana couldn't have played at all in 1991 because he was still recovering from the beating the Giants put on him the year before, and please don't be so ungrateful as to denigrate your MVP QB in 1992. Montana's run in 1993 with KC was great, but remember the AFC was weak.
@drwood04 You are grasping. Running, to those 49er Teams--was simply to give the QB a rest. Young had better Stats than Montana--not counting Super Bowl Victories. I have said time and again--it was Young's constant attention to his Stats that got him in trouble. He held that damn ball a 100 times when he should have tossed it out of bounds, into the ground, or down field when receivers were covered or the Rush was intense. He didnt. He ate it or ran. Anything but an incompletion.
I have always said that Montana is the greatest QB of all time, despite Young's stats...you conveniently omitted that. Running for the really good niners teams wasn't just to give the QB a rest. Against the elite defenses, you need to be two-dimensional, or you won't win -- hence why Montana in his prime had a losing PLAYOFF record against the Giants during his career (2-3 lifetime).
@drwood04 Montana taking that weak ass KC Team to the brink was very special. I saw Young with weak teams early in his career. He was very average. He took over a Team that dismantled Denver to the tune of what could have been 75-10. It was only 55-10 lol......Mickey Mouse could have taken a year off to heal and then won it all. Just ask Walsh----to his dying day he regretted leaving that team too damn early. He was brilliant----and he knew that team had 2+ more Super Bowls in them..
@matt75hooper Absolutely. Had Montana been left to play the entire game against Denver as Young in his Superbowl vs. the chargers, Young would have never been able to break his touchdown record. nobody talks about that. It should be taught as fact just like Michael Jordan in basketball, that Joe Montana was the greatest quarterback to ever play, and the 49ers pissed away several superbowls by letting him go
He only had Deion in 1994, and guess what....they WON the SB that year -- the only year the defense was good. And that was the only year Deion was a Niner...their defenses after Deion returned to being average, and were subsequently shredded by Favre in the 95, 96, and 97 playoffs. The defenses they had prior to Deion coming weren't Super Bowl caliber...they almost made up for it b/c of Young's brilliance, but it wasn't enough against Dallas in 92 and 93.
@drwood04 . Yeah I think the Niners losing Deion was HUGE. Had we had him we would have beaten the packers in these mid nineties battles. The Defense was never the same without him.
You make some great points about Young being Brilliant. I always took Young for Granted, as I am a huge Montana fan. At the end of the day Montana is the Greatest, but young is up there as well (top five in my opinion)
@MuayThaiFighter2009 I think that's fair. Montana is the greatest QB of all time, but lets not forget how great Young was (and yes, Young from 91 onward was better than Montana). My all-time top QBs: 1. Montana 2. Johnny Unitas 3. Tom Brady 4. Peyton Manning 5. Brett Favre 6. John Elway 7. Dan Marino 8. Steve Young 9. Terry Bradshaw 10. Jim Kelly 11. Kurt Warner 12. Warren Moon 13. Roger Staubach 14. Troy Aikman 15. Dan Fouts
@drwood04 how can you put manning, jim kelly and kurt warner above troy aikman . Troy accuracy was amazing plus all the media he had to deal with playing for america's team
everytime Young went against the Chiefs he got owned and looked like a rag doll bitch. Steve Young has a super bowl ring? So does Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer. Average QBs with good teams around them.. Owned Bitch.
Why would you put Young in the same class as Dilfer or Williams? Young won 2 MVP'S, lead the league is passing 6 times and is in the HOF. So no way should he be in the" average QB's with good teams around them" discussion
@curtisalvin Yea, whoever said that needs their head examined.. Id put bradshaw in that dilfer category though, maybe a step higher.. joe capp woulda won 4 titles with that defense..
Are you on crack ! ? Seriously ! Steve Young is a top 10 QB of All-Time. He would have won 2-3 more Super Bowls if the 49ers had a half decent defense
Eh, the Chiefs did go 13-3 three times after Joe Montana retired. Now granted, they didn't win a playoff game in any of those three seasons, but 13-3 says they weren't garbage.
who the hell is in here hating on Steve Young? I see theres somebody giving negatives to ppl comments about Steve Young...and negatives about the Eagles....whoever you are fuck you
this reminds me of when andy reid benched mcnabb im not trying to compare QBs cuz Young is Great but yeah it reminds me of the eagles... But Mcnabb will be on fire this yr like he was last yr
Losing Charles Haley after '91 and Ricky Watters
after '94 cost Steve Young at least 2 Superbowls.

you know what going into bradshaws last year he had 210 td and 210 ints and threw 2 tds in his last season. the guys had horrible. bradshaws stats. 1st season 6 td-22ints 2nd season 13td-22ints. this guy was not an accurate quarterback. any decent QB of that time could have won on that team.
goodlookin41 1 year ago
@goodlookin41 He also played much of his career in the dead ball era. Back then, there were very few rules protecting QBs and WRs; defensive players could pretty much do anything that they wanted. Matter of fact, if you look at his year by year stats, he never throw more than 20 TDs in a season until after the major rule changes of 1978.

if montana never gets hurt and their is no cowboys the 49ers win 8 superbowls in a row.

Montana got hurt because a Super Bowl championship defense knocked him out...even the best QB of all time can't win them all.

from 88-94 the 49ers were in 6 nfc championships in 7 years.
goodlookin41 1 year ago
It's simply amazing that the 49ers had two Hall of Fame quarterbacks on the roster at the same time. The closest thing we've seen that's comparable was Brees-Rivers and Favre-Rodgers. However, even those tandems don't come close to Montana-Young.

matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper that's not true at all
JackBauer270 1 year ago
@JackBauer270 Really ? Montana inherited a {2 - 14} 49er Team and went on to win 4 Super Bowls. Montana handed over a 49er Team to Young, that had just won a Super Bowl 55 to 10. Young took a superb 49er Team that should have won 3 more Bowls--and won ONE. I give him credit for that, not an easy task to be sure. But they should have won more. Young was always more worried about his Stats than the team. His concussions were a result of stat watch---instead of dumping the ball !
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
Totally untrue. Montana handed over a 49ers team that had LOST the NFC championship to the Giants, and had NO running game. For Young to take the 1991 team to 10 wins was a near miraculous feat -- and then he won 2 MVPs and a SB MVP afterwards.
Only a complete moron would fail to appreciate having one of the all-time greats at QB following up the career of the all-time greatest QB ever.
drwood04 1 year ago
@JackBauer270 Wait a minute, Steve Young inherited a superbowl team? Steve Young didn't begin as a starter until 1991, where there were no Ronnie Lott, no Fred Dean, a whole new secondary, no Roger Craig, and most importantly no Bill Walsh. Had Bill Walsh been with Steve Young, the 49ers would have easy won two more superbowls. I am not saying that Steve is a better QB than Joe, but give Steve Young his due respect as one of the greatest QB to ever play.

@montkv yes just like ben roethlisberger inherited the league best defense. only thing is steve had to makes plays while ben defense did.

Yeah Joe was a HOFer but he benefited alot from Bill Walshs system and all the pro bowlers around him. Steve actually had more passing tittles better carrer completion pct. and better carrer QB rating, had a stronger arm and was one of the best runners for QBs ever. I dont care about rings dos'nt mean shit, yeah he was key in the clutch, but his team was great hes top 5 but not top 3 of all time
MrCjp37 1 year ago
@MrCjp37 dude joe had no int in the playoffs and the most mvps in superbowl history 3 times and never lost in a superbowl and more comebacks so that wat makes joe better then steve but steve is the top 5 QB ever
longstratt 1 year ago
@longstratt Yeah thats impresive, like I said he did'nt make mistakes. But seriously hows he gonna throw int's? his receivers always had a step on the DB 's, he never had to really to squeez anything in there cause his guys were always open due to the system they were in and of course they were faster then the guys covering them. Look at the highlights of Joe throwing the ball and then look at Elway, Marino and Manning. Joe threw a lot of short stuff and his guys would take it to end zone
MrCjp37 1 year ago

CubanCheGuevara 1 year ago
I really admire Steve Young for just how he played in the shadow of Montana. I think that its a shame that people undermine Steve Young with Joe Montana. Why cant people just say that they are both Hall of Famers and both deserve adoration from the 49er fans.
buckeyefan2178 1 year ago
Steve Young and the '94 49ers may be my favorite story ever. To see Young finally overcome the shadow of Montana, to finally get that damn monkey off his back. Wonderful.
SuperTugz 1 year ago
Super - No offense...but Steve Young will never "overcome" Joe's shadow. He can't.
To this day, in the culture, the name Joe Montana is synonymous with grace under fire. Joe was like Muhammad Ali. It wasn't that he won, it's the WAY he won. Joe is San Francisco's first sweetheart. The one that got away.
Steve Young can never be anything more than the guy who tried to fill Joe's shoes. He can be forgiven, but he will never be loved like Joe.
CubanCheGuevara 1 year ago
@CubanCheGuevara
SuperTugz 1 year ago
SuperTugz - I think this comes down to style. I liken it to a choreographed dance, sometimes these match-ups don't seem like sports. More like a Hollywood movie. A beautiful thing to watch.
I think it's the reason nobody ever remembers Jim Plunkett. He might have won but he won ugly. His passes all looked like wounded ducks.
Of course Steve Young had talent and passion but personally, I don't think he had much style. Young had more in common with Jeff Garcia than Joe Montana.

arkoe310 2 years ago
@mlgoscar: That fan saying "You can't beat Joe" is another person that was brainwashed by the pro-49er media into thinking that Joe Montana is the best ever. However, it was easy for the 49ers to succeed with an offense relying on slants and short passes after the rule changes that happened 32 years ago. Let's see that offense work if they never changed the rules. It probably wouldn't have.
a7b7c78 1 year ago

@a7b7c78 What do you mean?
gfscarface13 1 year ago
@gfscarface13: What I mean is that the 94 Niners were paying players under the table and circumventing the Salary Cap. That is why they won.
a7b7c78 1 year ago 2
@a7b7c78 Your evidence?
I mean im sure that happens all the time, and still does today, what can the leagues do? really nothing you can do to police it.
gfscarface13 1 year ago
@a7b7c78 They won because jimmy johnson retired as cowboys head coach after the previous season, that's why they were finally able to get to the super bowl and win it, johnson wasn't there to beat the 49ers a 3rd straight year, I'm not a cowboys fan, but that's what happened.
JM1980s 1 year ago
@JM1980s: Well, I don't know if Jimmy Johnson would have made that much difference.
The dominance of the Cowboys and Niners remind me of how much the NFL sucked from 88-95. It wasn't only them, but Buffalo's 4 SB losses made it bad as well. It got better in 96 when Denver re-emerged into the league's elite and won the SB in 97 and 98. I would put those Denver teams and the 98 Vikings against those Cowboy and Niner teams any day of the week.

forevercuz 1 year ago
@forevercuz: No, without Walsh putting together a defense, they wouldn't have won SB's. This is something the Dolphins never did with Marino. Walsh did it in 1981 practically overnight.
a7b7c78 1 year ago
@forevercuz Yes, Without Joe Montana as their QB, maybe the 49ers wouldn't have 4. However, without the Ronnie Lott, Fred Dean, Roger Craig, and Bill Walsh, the 49ers wouldn't have one superbowl. It is a team's sport. No one does it by himself. With the O-line blocking and Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, John Taylor, and Freddie Solomon scoring TDs, the 49ers wouldn't have won 4 superbowls. Joe is a big part in their success, but he wasn't the only part. Just ask Joe himself.
montkv 1 year ago
@a7b7c78 The Niners were 2 - 14 when Joe arrived. He proceeded to win 2 Super Bowls before Jerry Rice was drafted. In his last Super Bowl he threw 5 TD's and 300 yards---basically in one half. He sat out most of the second as the score grew to 55 -10. Joe Montana is not over-rated, he is perfectly rated, THE BEST EVER.
matt75hooper 1 year ago

a7b7c78 1 year ago
@a7b7c78 Your choice as best ever ? Your evidence ?
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper: For me, I think that it was Unitas. He threw a TD pass in 47 consecutive games. He was a winner. When Dan Fouts gave his Hall of Fame induction speech in 1993, he said that the only reason that he made the Hall was because he was able to learn at the feet of the greatest QB of all-time, Johnny Unitas, who he played with for a year with San Diego in 1973.
a7b7c78 1 year ago
@a7b7c78 Unitas ? OK. I can live with that. I saw Unitas for 10 years, he was a Field General. Just a footnote----you may find very interesting. When asked---Unitas said 'Montana was the best'.
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
Montana is the best QB ever, but don't forget they never won a SB without Ronnie Lott either. Steve Young never had a defensive player of Lott's caliber for his entire starting career.
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 49ers best point differential was during the Young years, so much for Joe's advantage defensively. Lott was awesome x 10---no question. I did not appreciate the Young years because I thought Montana should have written his own ticket after 4 Championships. There is absolutely no question in my mind Montana would have delivered 1 perhaps even 2 more Super Bowls. The core team he left behind was awesome. The 80's were far tougher than the 90's. Many HOF QB's to deal with each week.
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
Young's offensive stats from 1991-1994 were better than any 4 year stretch that Montana put together.
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 Bottom line--No Lott, Niners still win 4 Super Bowls. No Montana, no 4 Super Bowls. Case closed. A much weaker 49er Team won their 5th Super Bowl without Lott or Montana, thus the obvious conclusion--the 49ers certainly would have won the 5th and possibly 6th Super Bowl WITH Montana at the helm. Young and the 90's 49ers had nowhere near the competition of the 80's. It seemed every other week Montana was playing a future HOF QB & strong Team...Manning and Brady now face even less.
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
And the 90s had more HOF QBs in their prime than the 80s did.
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 . I agree with you. I think the 94' Niner team was better than the 88 team. The 94 team TROUNCED the Chargers
MuayThaiFighter2009 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
"Every other week" Montana was facing a HOF QB? Give me a break. How many HOF QBs were there in the NFC in the 80s besides Montana? Wade Wilson? Danny White? Jim McMahon? Tomczak? Joe Theisman? Jay Schroeder? Doug Williams? Phil Simms? Randall Cunningham? Jim Everett?
Compare that to the 90s in the NFC....Troy Aikman and Brett Favre were each better than any 80s NFC QB except Montana...and Young faced them annually in the playoffs. Montana's QB competition was far weaker.
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 Marino.....Elway...Simms....Foutes.....Boomer....etc The guys you named would all star today, as many Teams are saddled with 4th stringers.....Lott was more valuable than Taylor. Check out each's jewelry cabinet. Steve Young was very good. If he took over a 2-14 Niner Team as Montana did, we would be asking 'Steve who ?' His Stat Watch and running versus an incompletion / dump would have gotten him injured and gone. God ! How many sacks he took to save a damn %.....
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@drwood04 In fairness though Danny White would likely be in the HOF had he one a super bowl, his stats were better than Staubach or Aikman.
Speegs23 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
"No Lott, Niners still win 4 SuperBowls"
You've just lost all credibility -- like much of the mainstream media you vastly overrate offense and underrate defense. The niners won 4 SB b/c in addition to having the best QB of all time (and best WR of all time for two of them), they had no worse than the 3rd best defense in the league during their SB runs -- and that was b/c Lott was the 2nd best defensive player of the decade other than Lawrence Taylor (the real LT).
drwood04 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
Montana's run in 1993 with KC was great, but remember the AFC was weak.
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 You are grasping. Running, to those 49er Teams--was simply to give the QB a rest. Young had better Stats than Montana--not counting Super Bowl Victories. I have said time and again--it was Young's constant attention to his Stats that got him in trouble. He held that damn ball a 100 times when he should have tossed it out of bounds, into the ground, or down field when receivers were covered or the Rush was intense. He didnt. He ate it or ran. Anything but an incompletion.
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper
I have always said that Montana is the greatest QB of all time, despite Young's stats...you conveniently omitted that. Running for the really good niners teams wasn't just to give the QB a rest. Against the elite defenses, you need to be two-dimensional, or you won't win -- hence why Montana in his prime had a losing PLAYOFF record against the Giants during his career (2-3 lifetime).
drwood04 1 year ago
@drwood04 Montana taking that weak ass KC Team to the brink was very special. I saw Young with weak teams early in his career. He was very average. He took over a Team that dismantled Denver to the tune of what could have been 75-10. It was only 55-10 lol......Mickey Mouse could have taken a year off to heal and then won it all. Just ask Walsh----to his dying day he regretted leaving that team too damn early. He was brilliant----and he knew that team had 2+ more Super Bowls in them..
matt75hooper 1 year ago
@matt75hooper Absolutely. Had Montana been left to play the entire game against Denver as Young in his Superbowl vs. the chargers, Young would have never been able to break his touchdown record. nobody talks about that. It should be taught as fact just like Michael Jordan in basketball, that Joe Montana was the greatest quarterback to ever play, and the 49ers pissed away several superbowls by letting him go
pucpimp 1 year ago
@drwood04 . Steve Young had Deon Sanders. Do you consider Deon a top rated Defensive back?
MuayThaiFighter2009 1 year ago
@MuayThaiFighter2009
He only had Deion in 1994, and guess what....they WON the SB that year -- the only year the defense was good. And that was the only year Deion was a Niner...their defenses after Deion returned to being average, and were subsequently shredded by Favre in the 95, 96, and 97 playoffs. The defenses they had prior to Deion coming weren't Super Bowl caliber...they almost made up for it b/c of Young's brilliance, but it wasn't enough against Dallas in 92 and 93.
drwood04 1 year ago

Are you on crack ! ? Seriously ! Steve Young is a top 10 QB of All-Time. He would have won 2-3 more Super Bowls if the 49ers had a half decent defense

umm he already has won 3 superbowls

i was referring to chiefs fans

Eh, the Chiefs did go 13-3 three times after Joe Montana retired. Now granted, they didn't win a playoff game in any of those three seasons, but 13-3 says they weren't garbage.

Steve Young never had the intention to be like Montana. Steve Young was his own he had to win over the fans.

ROFL, @ 2:48.
Montana: "He should brought his A game, and I wouldn't had to kick his ass like that on week 2."
Lamar Hunt: "Well, you played a hell of a game, man." "Playoff time for KC."
Montana: "I know, right." "I am the only one with 4 superbowls, not him."
In 1998, Montana: "He only has one. HAHAHA!!!"
