  • how many times per day should we do this?? pls.. help meee :(

  • Anyone know the name of the maneuver where you are strapped to a board and tilted around, even upside down? I remember seeing it on Swedish TV once.

  • this shits Kray!

  • Well it helped me find out which side so I've done the exercise and fingers crossed!

  • is this able to treat off balance / loss of balance?

  • Comment removed

  • hi, how many times will you do this? thanks

  • so you are only supposed to do the maneuver , once a day for five days?or only once in five days?

  • I want to give Dr. Epley a bouquet of roses and a medal of honor! One minute, i could barely move my head a few inches without horrible spins and heinous nausea . . . the next minute, after doing this ONCE, I was all better. Hallelujah. And it can't hurt anyone who tries it . . . so just try it, if you have vertigo. (Mine followed a normal ear infection, which the doctor said was in the middle ear. Guess somehow it messed up the "rocks" in the inner ear, too.) Anyway: JUST TRY IT.

  • i did the epley manuveur and it did nothing for me

the hallpike test worked but i still get spinning and diizziness. i've done the epley manuveur a few times now over the past 2 days and it isn't working

  • I have dizziness no matter what I do or which way I'm looking... So.. I'm probably just gonna die.. (Y)

  • @InfamousDainton

Same here. At home, at work, everywhere. Accompanied by anxiety and fear of fainting... I've never had but it feels like I will when it starts spinning.

  • @InfamousDainton same here i get dizzy all the time whenever i move my head.. They said i might have problems in my eye or my nose or ears watever. This started like 5 or 4 years ago and for me its just getting worser and worser. :'(

  • @juliexxx14 you probably have virtigo, i just play too much computer... o.o

  • @InfamousDainton yeah... and same here. The moment i started getting on the computer too much it hurts my head and i start to feel dizzy. And sometimes if i bend over or look up it triggers. For me this is even worst than having a disease or something becuz tho we don't feel pain or anything but somehow its really annoying. Now im almost to graduate high school and im too scared to go anywhere by myself becuz if i get dizzy i get scared being alone. We don't know when this would last. :(

  • @juliexxx14 i'm just going through my second year at college, i dont know what i've done but i gradually got better, all i did was drink beer, play xbox go outside my back yard, do some joggin on the spot, drink plenty of water, and its stableized, i hope you get well soon as i went through it during my holidays luckily, i dont think i would have gone to school if i had it then! you must be alot more braver than me, Good luck! if you ever wanna chat on facebook or msn, msg ur name or something x

  • @InfamousDainton aweee... lucky you.! Yeah I hope so too/ This is really annoying. Like if i will just get fever i'd rather take it than getting dizzy for the wholeday. SOO ANNOYING! Yeah i have fb. :)

  • Wey-hey!

This procedure has just worked miracles for World Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, who suffered dizzy spells due to a virus infection in one ear (I actually came over to this page from her interview by googling "Epley manoeuvre).

She was looking for a remedy that did not involve medication that would impact on her physical performance, so good one, right?

  • a very important note is to do epley's maneuver one time only. Then after 5 days...if no cure..do it one more time...and that's it .....

    this is crutial !

  • So, umm this kind of scares me bc those positions are the exact positions that cause me to spin!!! LOL what do I do?

  • I had the same fear and experience. I tried the Epley once and it cured my severe spinning and nausea. During the maneuver, the spinning stopped after 20 seconds in each side position. It is quite a relief when it stops! Try to find someone to help you that you trust. I recommend sitting quietly and calming your stomach down before you try the manuever so you can handle the 15 - 20 sec of spinning without getting nausea.

  • why is it called the EPLEY maneuver? it's weird cause that's my last name. haa.

  • dr. epley from portland, or invented it.

  • Though I was not diagnosed officially, my symptoms fit this exactly. I had one episode a year ago and tried this procedure and it worked. I had it again this morning so bad I was spinning and nauseous if I bent my head forward. I just followed this video and afterwards my symptoms are gone. If they come back I'll just do this again, it really does work! Sounds silly, but it does!

  • Thanks so much for uploading this video!

  • My mother is 50 years, and she had BPV for 3 weeks and then saw this video, and I did this exercise with her.

The dizziness went off from the first day,Im still doing this twice a day and 5 times each with her. I also got to know that a multivitamin helps this, so she took a multivitamin too. And she said she feel even better with the multivitamin.

And she think it's better to cover the head and ear without letting cold air get in.I think these tips will help other too.Thank God!

  • Thanks for refreshing my memory on how to do the Epley Maneuver. With the help of my wife, I was better in a couple minutes.

  • I tried this last night on my mum, who has been suffering with vertigo for about a month now...she felt alot better within about 20 mins, but this morning woke up feeling really ill, and alot worse. Last night during the third phase ( face pointing down) she got really really bad, which leads me to believe something was happening, then felt better, now worse. I tried again today but with little success. Its really upsetting her, which upsets me haha.

  • Sometimes the crystals can move from posterior canal into the horizontal canal. Then you need to perform a 360 degree BBQ roll away from the bad ear in 90 degree increments. In her condition it would be best to see an ENT (ear nose and throat) Dr or see a Physical Therapist trained in Vestibular Rehab.

  • thanks dude., Yeah she now has good days and bad days.

  • I use this exercise for my vertigo.

The first time I used it I had been severely dizzy for two days. I went to the doctor and he tried this. The first time I sat up after the first turn, I was so dizzy I cried, but after about 10 seconds the dizziness went away. Now everytime I feel my vertigo coming on, I do this and I'm fine for a couple of months. My vertigo is from a little calcium build up in my cochlea bone in the inner ear, so these exercises help knock the calcium build up out of place

  • what type of doctor should I see if I believe I had bbpv?

Also I've had this my entire life. If I role over in bed I go nuts. So why is it that some people say they've had this for 3 months?

  • I've had BPPV for a few yrs now but thank God I had only abt 3 severe attacks so far. I found out that I cannot sleep with my head turned left and downwards while sleeping on my back. When I have mild attacks, I will do the Brandt- Daroff exercise. It's easier when u'r alone. Go to ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor for this diagnosis. Wish u well tommatojuice!

  • It acts differently for different people. Your best best is to see an opthamologist who can rule out other more serious issues. If it's BPPV, a physical therapist with experience in this disorder is usually the best person to see. Some physical therapists are "direct access" and can see you without having an order from a doctor.

  • Hi, I am a 13 year old male and have been suffering from this for over 4 months now. I have no idea if I have BPPV, but I have every symptom of BVVP. Everytime I try moving I get extremely dizzy. It has gotten so worse that I couldn't even move, and one day I fell because of it, nearly severly hurting myself. I do not want to do this, but I do. I do not want to injure myself more.

  • My friend suffered from Meniere's Disease Vertigo for 4 months-constant spinning. TRY THIS? She now feels great!

Intratympanic Gentamicin>>> Depending on the Dr. administering into your ear it is not as painful as some would lead you to believe. Hope this helps!!

  • My cousin, who is a senior citizen, had his first bought of vertigo a few years back. It was so severe he injured himself badly enough to end up in rehab. He couldn't walk unassisted for 3 months. He was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease. His doctor taught him how to perform this maneuver on himself and he's had great success. He still has spells but this helps enormously. He's able to drive and live a normal life. Anyone who has Meneire's knows how incapacitating it can be.

  • I have this problem also. When you go to see you ENT doctor, they will do 4-5 tests. When they see which ear is giving you the vertigo, they will put a tube in your ear and blow very warm air in you ear first, then very cool air. They will do this in both ears. If spinning occurs, then you have vertigo. I have it in both ears. I will try this maneuver.

  • Durante 15 dias sufri de vertigo , siendo medico consulte a otros especialistas sin mejoras ,encontre estas maniobras y fueron efectivas en el mismo momento que las realice , son de mucha utilidad las recomiendo

  • I am 14 years old. I think I have BPPV...It's gotten increasingly worse in the last few months...What should I ask my doctor next time I go? Thanks...

  • This treatment is relatively new and I don't think that a lot of doctors are totally aware of it yet...it does sound like a bit of a crackpot cure. But I have seen it work, it's amazing. Suggest that he research the Epley maneuver. If he does not want to, then call the Epley Center (Dr. Epley is the head of staff) and ask where you can go that can help you.

  • Just got this done today; I hope it works!!! I've had this vertigo for a year now while being misdiagnosed twice.

  • How can you figure out which ear is the trouble? It started off turning my head to the left and now when I lean my head back (looking up) then straight again. Two Dr.s told me BPPV --but which ear?

  • The claymation dix hallpike maneuver video can help u determine which ear is in trouble.

  • The side that cause your vertigo... thats the side you start on.

  • It was over 2 months of spinning and people thinking that I was drunk. Dr. ordered MRI. It was a really bad day for me. This may nothing *But* after my MRI the ringing in my ear got a whole lot lowder and from a steady high pitch ringing it would go up and down in volume. The best way to discribe it would to be is to rev your care up. When it happened all you could do is say WOOOOO untill the volume went down again. Next day no spinning. Also high white blood count.

  • I reccomend seeing an ENT or audiologist for this. yes it can be done by yourself but doing it incorrectly can result in debris affecting other semicurcular canals making it a real pain in the rear to treat. The pros can easily tell which canal is affected and treat accordingly

  • @JamCityUSA I've got BPPV and have had it for years. Two weeks ago I did a self diagnosis on the net and then had it confirmed by my doctor. I get it tilting my head back too as in a dentist's chair. Really awful! But which ear? I have no idea. And who can do the Epley for me?

  • @mikey42 An ear, nose & throat specialist can do it for you.

  • @JamCityUSA the direction that the nystagmus saccade is beating will give you the answer...you need someone to watch after dix hallpiking you

  • @JamCityUSA

I know another exercise very efective

  • My doctor also did it different, but after trying this manuever, I feel much better sooner. The dizzy spell during the treatment is worth it to get rid of it.

  • Of all the Epley/particle repositioning manoeuvre videos, this is the most useful. Each position is held for only 20 seconds. In my own practice, I have settled on 30 seconds (some advocate 60 seconds) and have yet to fail to improve a patient's symptoms (approx. 8 subjects). GPs and Family Doctors: Do try this.

  • These procedures are only helpful if one does in fact have BPPV. The method used depends on where the BPPV is located, most often in the posterior canal. This is not for Meneiere's patients as their attacks are not related to abrupt position changes, but rather excessive inner ear fluid in the vestibular organ.

  • Yes, this is true. This maneuver is only helpful for 'ear rock' BPPV.

  • my balance specialist told me to look at the claymation dix hallpike maneuver video. It helps me immediately.

  • Glad to hear that. Actually it's not much different from the other maneuvers, but seems to be designed for detecting early signs of BPPV. During an attack, you will still need someone to assist you with this maneuver, tho.

  • i dont understand tho.. my dr does it different.. i been looking this manuver up all along and i noticed there are like 4 diff ways to do it.. does anyone know how to do it the RIGHT way? im confused

  • I wish u lots of luck and hope u get well soon. :-)

  • I can't thank you enough! Got a sudden vertigo attack 2 days ago- a doctor prescribed 2 medications which knocked me out day and night & still woke up in a spinning room. Searched YouTube & found your video. Tried it this morning & whalla... I was out of the house in no time. Of course my husband had to drive b/c I'm still a little drowsy - I think the medication isn't totally out of my system. So thank you again:) Everybody should try this maneuver before taking any drugs.

  • Before I treated my Dad with this 5 minute maneuver, the BPPV attacks recurred weekly and would last for days (the doctor's prescribed drugs has only little effect on my Dad's recovery), but now it's been about 3 months since my Dad had his last BBPV attack. Thank God, and thank u google for referring me to this video. :-)

  • OMG. I had a sudden attack of vertigo in my left ear the other day and I need to do this but I'm afraid to. I just tried it at home but stopped almost immediately, as I got so dizzy! It's unbelievable how dizzy you get, when you recline as directed on the affected side. Going to discuss this at my doctor's appt. 2 days from now. Wish me luck!!!

  • hey i have the same thing.. and i tried this but got more dizzy.. i dont know what to do.. how did the dr's go? what did he say? any luck?

  • U need someone to help you with this treatments coz during an attack your sense of direction would become totally incapacitated.

  • I used the other video on here that you do yourself. It worked perfectly. I had the one spell of vertigo - none since! The Epley manuver evidently totally "fixed" my inner ear (hope it stays fixed!)

  • You need to be referred to or find someone who specialises in this field - a vestibular physiotherapist or otoneurologist. I had the same thing. Good luck.

  • I've had vertigo for a month now, the first week i couldn't walk.

  • Thanks for this video! How many treatments do we need to do before the vertigo is all gone? I had bpv already over 3 months now, and it's already minor... but i'm tempted to do this manuver...

  • I have no idea. I'm not a doctor. :-)

  • I had two bad vertigo attacks a couple of years ago. On my first ER visit, they were too focused on my heart because of my weight. They only found a slightly elevated white blood cell count. I'm back 10 days later, and the admitting nurse mentioned vertigo. I also had the nystagmus. I had one Epley treatment, and no serious attacks since then. Some minor ones from time to time. I still think it's weird only liquids come up if you throw up during a vertigo attack. Solid food stays down.

  • The spinning effect would be gone in minutes after applying a correct Epley maneuver. I have been using this treatment on my Dad's BPPV attacks for several months now with almost instantaneous results.

Closing both eyes during an attack would help prevent nausea.

  • I was treated yesterday afternoon and thought I would vomit during it for sure. It was horrible, I felt awful right after & for hours to come!! I had horrible tingling in my arms to my finger tips but once I got home and sat up straight and followed the physios after advice for the rest of the day I can tell you I woke up feeling better. Not 100% gone but we only treated one side! But the big drunken room spins are gone - just minor spinning now. Hopefully will be 100% after next treatment!

  • did your vertigo ever go away?

  • Yes, my vertigo completely went away. within 2-3 days of first treatment I was completely better. I went back for 2nd treatment anyway just in case but I really didn't need it.

I 100% recommend the epley manouever and have also told my Dr. so so that he can recommend it to his patients. My Dr. really didn't know much about treating BPPV but he does now!

  • But does the treatment works for you? :-)

  • ugggg...I've had BPPV for a long time and I know I need to do this, and I know I'll have to "lay in the dizziness" for a bit, but man-my stomach just churns even watching the video :o(
