I thought that thumb was used for top 3 strings and rest of the 3 fingers (excluding the pinky) were used for bottom 3 fingers? Isnt that the ideal way to finger-pick a guitar?
Actually, I have just started and dont wanna learn any bad habits. :)
Attempting to define the ideal way to play the guitar is like trying to find the perfect length for a piece of string. The system you mention is the "ideal way" to teach beginners basic folk picking. But that's about it. The reality is that you can play any string with any finger or the thumb, depending on your needs. If you ever hear a guitar player saying, "you MUST do it this way, or that way", my advice is to walk away. You can be sure that person doesn't know what they're talking about.
Just one quick question, if you don't mind - if you're playing a faster picado run, would you normally anchor your thumb against the sixth string, or do you just let it float like you do here?
I would not anchor anything anywhere. It is common practice to rest the thumb lightly (on the E bass string when playing notes on the three treble strings. As the scale progresses down to include the D string, the thumb is lifted off the E bass string and gently rests on the guitar body. As the i m playing fingers continue to play on the A and then E bass strings, the thumb moves up a little with each string to leave the same relative gap between thumb and playing fingers.
Grisha has some really good stuff and I also would recommend his videos. But this video is not about how to play picado, or even about scales, but only demonstrates hand angles. It's not necessarily the most exciting picado related video in itself but it hopefully serves a purpose of it's own for someone looking for this particular insight. Thanks for watching.
I agree this is not my best video and may not be of interest to everybody to be sure. But I thought I would put it up anyway since it is my way of showing hand angles to someone who asked me about it. It's always easier to demonstrate something on video than to try to explain it in words.
Sorry about the shaky camera movement. It's all a learning experience really. Never mind. We plod along regardless and learn as we go along, knowing not everything will be perfect. Gosh! I'm only just getting used to doing things in this widescreen do dah. Fascinating stuff. Similar things I do in future will be better. I promise.
By the way whats a 2octave c scale.

Nice camera work.

My queston is: the hand should be perfectly parallel to the guitar? It feels rather uncomfortable and I get tension of trying to do it that way.
Great videos anyways, thanks!!

You make it look like that guitar is so easy to play, or is it my impression.

The guitar helps a lot because it wants to be played. Even a simple scale feels good on this guitar.

The video is perfect

You old video on picado is much better then this flyover.
For picado i would recommend the video from Grisha.....the best video to learn picado technique. search on youtube for:

No, I appreciate your efforts for sure, I mean you've taught me a lot, I saw the first video on picado and rasgueados from you long time back.
I understand though, when people are learning and someone is willing to show them, they would like to see it from a different angle.
I can relate that to Alzapua, when I was first learning that technique i wanted to see every angle.

Not the greatest song I've heard, but.... =P
Seriously very nice video I need to practice this. Looking forward to the next one, it's nice to see other men with long fingernails, lol.
