This is actually my favorite song. The first time I heard this I was alone, in a dark house, as a teenager..listening to this watching the sun rise. I will never forget that moment. Thanks, dad (I was listening to his cd's)
Will never forget partying, and getting that last beer to watch this that night on MTV in April 1992, then waking up late the next morning, and losing my job the next day..."It was so Effin' Worth it!!" LOL!!!
R.E.M. were at their absolute peak during this gig, they were on such a roll at this time and carried through to Automatic for the People. Agree with previous posters that this should be released as an cd/dvd combo. Many millions will have already seen this show but it's still worthy of an official release in the near future and give a few folk the chance to see those amazing versions of Low and Fall on Me.

I'm only 27 and this music came out when I was a young kid. These guys are one of the most underrated groups of all time. I think anyone who considers themselves a lover of all music must rate REM among the elite. A truly unique style and sound that is breathtaking and inspiring every time I listen. Their music sends your mind on a winged journey, soaring over God's beautiful creation. Stipe's passion is undeniable. There will never be another REM; as special as the likes of the Beatles.
@sdalt001 Lightning struck when they met in 1980, that's pretty much all there is to say. It happened with the Beatles too, just like you said. Those kind of bands really only come around every 10 years or so, and they set the stage for everyone else for a generation. Sure, they were rarely as famous as many of the bands they inspired (Coldplay, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc.) but those bands wouldn't exist without them, and that makes them the greatest.
@bernlin2000 I agree that R.E.M are an incredibly special band and one of my favourites. But considering that they've sold 30 million + albums, signed the world's most lucrative record contract at one point and spent from 1991-2011 touring huge arenas, I think it's fair to say they are pretty famous. They tailed off a little in the 2000s but they were, without a doubt, one of the biggest bands of the 90s.
im the guy always referring to the crap music we are subjected to today....you wont hear me saying one bad thing about this band, or this song....our musical parents...REM! √ LOVE!
@panaboy01 I always held a similar interpretation but the lyric "A perfect circle of acquaintances and friends/Drink another/Coin a phrase" speaks to me of carving out one's own tribe/family of people who love & "get" you & going on to live another day (try to win). Stipe's dedication at the start makes me think we're on the right track. Never heard of a hanging interpretation - have you?
Either way, this song is simultaneously melancholy and amazingly uplifting. A favorite for MANY years.
Michael, great guy....but REM has gotten too political. They should not be telling people who to vote for, no matter which side they believe in. I don't want to hear about Democrats or Republicans when I go to a concert....his political harping only takes away from the musical experience, and he should be respectful that there are many political opinions among REM's fans.
@meccaturbo Stipe's so-called "leftist" social democrat & environmentalist leanings inform many of REM's songs. In the same way that a film director or visual artist's work naturally relects their world view, a rock band's ideals cannot be 'divorced' from their music.
The same accusation of political bias has been leveled at bands such as Radiohead, Pearl Jam, U2, or Green Day. But these bands are the bands raising awareness about global issues and performing at charity gigs.
@LantaGem With REM, it's too much. Stipe was telling people who to vote for in the last presidential election. Radiohead, Pearl Jam, U2, and Green Day have not done that. Telling your fans who to vote for is simply wrong. It's ok to share ideas, not to say "you should vote for this person". The other bands you cited have not done that.
@meccaturbo - Haven't they? Check out details of the 2004 "Vote For Change" concert tour.
Along with REM, performers included such high-profile acts as Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Dixie Chicks, Death Cab for Cutie, Neil Young, Bright Eyes and countless others, many of whom urged the audience to vote against George W Bush. Green Day were also vocally "anti-Bush" and Radiohead openly spoke out against the policies of the British government while Tony Blair was in power.
@LantaGem Yep. All the more reason I don't like those artists....artists have no business telling their fans who to vote for. Sure, free speech is fine, but you automatically alienate some people when you tell the audience who to vote for. Any band with any intelligence knows this, so they don't do it. REM has become more and more this way, and their fan base is rapidly dwindling. REM has lost so much popularity in recent years.
@meccaturbo - Also, if you don't believe it, check out the U2/Green Day cover of "The Saints Are Coming". The video contains a satirical burn of the Bush government for using U.S. resources to keep troops in Iraq at the expense of helping out displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@LantaGem I don't disbelieve that, but U2 and Green Day have never told their fans who to vote for. REM has, and I think that's very poor of them to do.
@meccaturbo actually, while u2 might have kept quiet on the issue, Green Day clearly made the "American Idiot" album against GWB and in 2004 they were on MTV or some network and one of the band members (Dirnt?) told the crowd "you'd better vote for Kerry" and he was clearly serious. I do wish musicians would just back up and let people decide for themselves. If the artist feels they have to tell people how to vote, then they are overstepping their boundaries.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@vettehottie I agree, no matter what party anyone is, I think they should not have an artist tell them who to vote for. Like, in the last election, I didn't want an artist telling me to vote for Obama or McCain....I just prefer they respect their audience and not tell them who to vote for.
@meccaturbo - Mind you, I'm not saying the political viewpoint of the bands I mentioned is either right or wrong... Just that I believe they have as much right as anybody to express their opinion. After all, isn't freedom of speech one of the main tenets of a democracy?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@LantaGem Yes, but people pay to see music, not hear about the artist's political leanings. I wouldn't want any performers telling me to vote for either party. It's fine to discuss ways these artists are helping the world, but to blatantly say "vote for this candidate" - I believe that is totally wrong.
I know this much from a couple of short conversations, Perfect Circle has a lot of allegorical phrases that have to do with hanging, or being hung. 11 gallows on your sleeve is the first mention, ,but standing too soon is a very round the back way of painting the picture of someone hanging by the neck. I dont remember perfectly, but it is also sung from 3 or 4 different views as the song goes. Im probably botching this, but thats the best I can remember
@painxtreme i have never known what this song is about, with the lyrics being so abstract...but what you said makes sense. the imagery in the song fits the picture of someone being hung...i used to think this song was uplftiting, but not now. still very good though, but now on a deeper level. thanx. if you remember anymore about the idea behind the song, please post.
Put your hair back, we get to leave Eleven gallows on your sleeve Shallow figure, winner's paid Eleven shadows way out of place Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room Pull your dress on and stay real close Who might leave you where I left off? A perfect circle of acquaintances and friends Drink another, coin a phrase Heaven assumed, shoulders high in the room
my interpretation is Standing too soon, shoulders high in the room, as referring to a young person who feels awkward and out of place in the world .
This child or young persons stands too soon in a crowded gathering and compared to everybody else who remains seated, they draw attention unnecessarily, their shoulders the only ones high in the room. They try to speak, to say the right things, to win respect from their perfect circle of aquaintances and friends.
this is beatutifuel.......id like to understand englsih 100 persent......"standing to soon shoulders high inthe room"?? omg Rems lyricsa are a mystikal
...Still beautiful after all these years. I have always loved REM and especially Michael Stipe's wonderful soothing and expressive voice. Their music gave me something to cling to in my adolescent angst in the 1980's, and with the present state of our world, I cling to it today like a frightened child.
One of many songs that sounds remarkably better live. In the studio version Micheal Stipe's vocie seems to powerful and overtakes the song (in my opinion). Also in the live version Mike Mills backup vocals are incredible! Both versions are awesome but in my opinion live is always better.
The greatest 'MTV Unplugged' ever performed, fullstop.Their music of the time lent itself to be performed in such a format.Michael Stipe must be the greatest singer alive today.
Thank you for posting this, which is to my mind their perfect concert - every song was gorgeous and each member of the band was on top form, especially Michael.
A classic R.E.M. performance. Been looking for this particular recording ever since I first discovered youtube a few years ago. I'm glad someone uploaded it finally.
This performance by REM inspired me to buy a guitar and learn to play when I was 16 back in 1994. I went to the Twickenham gig in London last saturday and they played Perfect circle live along with Fall on me, Disturbance at the heron house, End of the world as we know it and many other early career songs. An indifferent set but a treat for a die hard fan like myself. This performance on MTV in 1991 is legend. What a band!
what I love about this song is that I can put it on repeat, and just get lost in it. this is one REM song that can bring out so many emotions and it just sucks you in. 4 minutes really isn't long enough, I always want more of this song. it's definitely one of my favorites from the REM catalog.
theres something about the tone of the organ that either ruins this version for me or makes it especially special. ill have to give it another listen.
agreed this is great. the best mtv unplugged performances in my opinion are in no particular order: nirvana, alice inchains, stone temple pilots, rem, pearl jam, clapton, staind, and the new york football Giants. it's too bad that alot of these aren't on DVD they shouldbe.
its strange, they used to all be on youtube but they were taken down. Maybe it was due to a copyrights, oh well. If anyone has this whole show please please put it up-
sorry but only R.E.M. did it in the spirit really, Nirvana had semi-electric guitars and drum kits etc. R.E.M. looked like they were busking which I always thought was the point
This is actually my favorite song. The first time I heard this I was alone, in a dark house, as a teenager..listening to this watching the sun rise. I will never forget that moment. Thanks, dad (I was listening to his cd's)

All of them have great chemistry together - they all lend the perfect blend of each other to make that sound - we all noticed that when Bill left.

4 minutes really isn't long enough, I always want more of this song. it's definitely one of my favorites from the REM catalog.

theres something about the tone of the organ that either ruins this version for me or makes it especially special. ill have to give it another listen.

i savor any chance to see this live. I'm glad that at least this one from unplugged got posted.

Does anyone have this entire performance? It should be on youtube
ThatHansonCover 4 years ago
agreed this is great. the best mtv unplugged performances in my opinion are in no particular order: nirvana, alice inchains, stone temple pilots, rem, pearl jam, clapton, staind, and the new york football Giants. it's too bad that alot of these aren't on DVD they shouldbe.
broatchg 4 years ago
its strange, they used to all be on youtube but they were taken down. Maybe it was due to a copyrights, oh well. If anyone has this whole show please please put it up-
ThatHansonCover 4 years ago
sorry but only R.E.M. did it in the spirit really, Nirvana had semi-electric guitars and drum kits etc. R.E.M. looked like they were busking which I always thought was the point
johnnymarrplayguitar 3 years ago 3
@johnnymarrplayguitar "looked like they were busking" excellent! yep, that's the perfect way to describe it!
