Read up on testing done with a E46 M3 vs a 335i. As they took the cars into condition where air pressure was lower, ie high temperature / high altitude, the 335i actually began outperforming the higher power rated M3.

That only really happens if you drive nose to tail for extended periods or if you have an IC that not properly sized for the application.
