I agree with the top comments but it would be nice if there was some verbal instructions to go with this video for us beginners who watch this and, like me, are thinking "ok...wtf is he doing?"
Man stands up too early in the shot stay low until the shot finishes. Also this is a good drill but make sure you finish the shot, not stop in the middle of the swing.
@TrippyCow i agree look at nadal...look at how much he uses his wrists..notice how he drops the actual racket and accerlerates with wrist motion..of course his arm helps with thats not the main source of how he generates his spin
@TrippyCow I'm not arguing about the low to high motion, thats correct. What im saying is that the source of that motion should be mainly from the wrist...you should brush the ball from low to high with wrist action..any arm movement is secondary...you arent gonna get a lot of spin if you have a static wrist and move just your arm from low to high.
the length of my hand is about 16 centimeters long and the width is about 9 -10 centimeters, what size should i get (by the way i am getting the babolat aeropro raquet) THANKS
@backstreetrascal Go to a reputable tennis pro shop and they will help you with everything. Even if you want to buy online just go the tennis shop and tell him what you just wrote down, make sure the store you go to is a tennis only store, not like a dicks or sports authourity, they don't know what they are talking about
all you need to do, is try brushing the ball when it comes to you, dont try to hit it too hard, just brush it, then when you got the hang of that, go ahead and try hitting harder, but remeber, it doesnt happen overnight so dont get frustatred!
Well, your first problem is, that backspin is the total opposite of topspin, backspin happens when you slice down on the ball, topspin is when you whip though the back of the ball in an upward windsheild type swing
The method from the contact point is the best way to teach beginners. Developing feeling with the ball and then adding the follow through to just finish with the back swing is a method delivering very good results.
Just because it's not a flat fast hit doesn't mean it sucks. It would have gone up close to the persons shoulder which makes it harder to hit. That's what topspin is. However he should have went back to his ready position instead of ONLY being able to hit a forehand from that position, even if it' just a drill.
the problem is everyone thinks theyre a fucking pro, thats why they bash all these videos. hes only trying to show people how to hit the shots. if ur soo gud at tennis, u shouldnt even need to learn how to add topspin anyway
Even pros need to improve their strokes... without being a professionnal, anyone can make a sound comment of why this motion is unsuitable and fundamentally wrong. The idea behind critic is that of understanding and enhancement; arguing is not a war which is won with the comment most people like, or with the illogical answer which only seems senseful.
The real gain is understanding and not the undeserved glorification of one's pride. Discussions are vain when they are fallacious.
By what should I start? There are actually two good things in this entireswing: he pushes the ball forward and he remains balanced... the entire stroke aside of these two is totally awful.
First, he doesn't use his non-hitting arm to guide the racket and doesn't make a proper take back which inhibits his ability to use the uncoiling of his upper body later in the motion.
Second, his swing is not continuous as he makes a pendulum swing; you need a continuous swing.
And so the man who thought he could refute my proposition is not even able to read a very short text? It's interesting how you exhibited so quickly your arrogance and tried to whip the critic by using pointless fallacies...
A man only gains at reading and it is of a far greater value than anything you could ever earn off your paycheck.
@GueorguiJoukov here's my reduting of your argument. i have 17 thumbs up, indicating at least 17 people who agree with me. you have zero, implying, that no one shares your opinion. judging by those numbers, it is plainly obvious, that a majority of people agree with my viewpoint, and disagree with yours. case fucking closed
My friend, this is the worst conclusion I came across to read, but is yet unfortunatly shared by the vast majority of people. Understand that it is not in the subjective agreement of many ignorants that one's answer is to legitimatly and rightly deemed as right in anything: it is rather for the answer itself and no matter how many believe in it or not, if it is right, it will remain just as right.
The number of people supporting an insanity won't make it anymore true.
@GueorguiJoukov first of all you spend too much time commenting on videos on youtube, do you even have a job, or is the internet where you spend all your time. secondly, simply becuase you don't agree with 18 other people, doesn't make them ignorants, rather it would likely mean that you are the one supporting an insane point, as evident by the fact that so many people disagree with you. if you went by your logic that nothing is subjective, then nothing in this world would work. idiot
Nay my friend, the world exist without us having to live within it; the man is not the measure of anything - if he was to be knowledgeable in something, he shall first see rightly what already existed before his eye and what will continue to be well after he will utter a word about it.
Do you even understand what subjectivity means? It is the self appropriation of a value acquired through the perspective conclusion of a given idea. Simply put, you make the idea relative to yourself
The problem arisen by a subjective based reference is that of multiple entreaties. About a single object, many answers will be regarded as right whereas this very object cannot be refered to be anything but its very self by any of the given people...
What will inevitably happen is a self-contradiction which is basically yourself pointing in both direction at once, discrediting and praising the very same idea of yours. It will inevitably call for self-anhiliation.
You can keep insulting me, but of both here, you are the person who claims to be knowledgeable and wise whereas I never pretended to be of such nature. I actually am an ignorant and would be more than glad to learn something, however, understand me: if I see the fallacy of a proposition, what an idiot would I be to admit ti to be true whilst it is not.
Perhaps am I simply being blind; then, guide my steps if so I was mistaken or else admit your own incapacity.
You know, you are not the first person trying to play the brilliant guy, thinking that he can refute my position... It's interesting because you do not seem to get a word of what I write, even though I use your language and not mine; you neither have an idea of what philosophy is and you try to speak of metaphysics.
If you are trying to humiliate me, it will be quite hard since I never considered myself as wise in anything; you only are making a fool of yourself.
And, lastly, it is never a waste of time to discuss and the gain of knowledge, of understanding, is by far greater than that of any job... Insult me, speak illogically and keep speaking of what the many considers as right; you are just making of yourself a great example of what Plato spoke and of what I keep saying... 2400 years after him and he couldn't be anymore right; the public opinion never changed.
Basically, you are commiting 3 logical flaws claiming this: the first one is to asset a value to a subjective answer; the second one is to consider the discussion as a fight; the last one is to consider the number as being a proof of value in the absolute.
The difference here, between more than 90% of those people who write, including you, and me is that I can PROVE LOGICALLY each of my line to be right from its very self to the implications it presents. Prove me to be wrong.
@GueorguiJoukov clearly, you are attempting to put on some kind of humerous act, by being a wordsmith, and rambling on with your incessant nonsense. i don't think, that in any location of that incoherent response did you even get close to a decent reply to my inital statement. evidently, the ability to write succintly is one of your great pitfalls.
Your initial statement which enquired about the nature of the inference which lead me to speak of this shot as being bad had already being adressed in the very first posts... And, if you are speaking about why do I consider the consideration of numbers as being a logical fallacy, I told you why: because it will inexorably lead to self-contradiction. I could demonstrate you how, but it takes a few hundreds of words you would not read.
@GueorguiJoukov actually it could be quite easily summarised, in a much more succint and precise number of words. oh, and as for,
"Your initial statement which enquired about the nature of the inference which lead me to speak of this shot as being bad had already BEING adressed in the very first post"
clearly the quality of your english is not as vaunted as you believe, judging by the poorness of that grammatical error.
If you do not swing continuously and make start-stop, you are wasting a great deal of energy pointlessly.
Third, because he doesn't rotate properly, he cannot uncoil properly which means that he will not be able to follow-through correctly. The consequence is indeed making a lob instead of a shot.
And, as for the third point which is a consequence of doing wrongly the previous set up, the fourth point would be how he tries to compensate for his errors.
That's a very simplified version of why his swing is not correct. Each pro hits each forehand - practice, warm-up, weak or even game shots using those fundamentals and always make sure they always use a complete swing - one with all 5 keys.
@vijanatrix yea, cuz imo top spin is more of a safe and secure shot, flats are all power and takes skill to actually keep in the court the whole rally
@vijanatrix True, but there's a BIG "area" between this and where the pros are at. A lot of people are in there and this is too basic. But it is a good video for showing the basic method.
his backhand is horrendous! firstly for a beginner to learn from him - there has to be a proper follow through. secondly - the balls aren't even landing in the appropriate part of the court!
people may say his techniqe is awful...it's a damn demonstration on how to do the techniqe, just because your jealous don't mean you can put people down that are better than you,
Idk why ppl are bashing this guy. He's very skilled. This is merely a demonstration teaching the technique behind a top spin based on the contact the racket must have when it hits the ball. If he were to hit the ball at a normal pace it would be difficult to see the motion.
there are way too many morons critiquing a dude who is just trying to show the basics...
Well, because they didn't understood the purpous of an example.
Like when you show somehow how to make a movement with weights, you do not carry full load; you pick an easy one to show the idea and point the dangerous parts and things to avoid.
He might be doing a drill or something like that just to get the idea. Of course, he won't play like this. I don't think it's a peculiarly good idea to do this, but it still what he tries to do.
this video is not for beginners as beginners do not learn topspin, but timing and technique first. so in saying that, if this video does not apply to beginners then who does it apply to? no one! any player who has good technique and timing certainly wouldnt learn to hit spin like this. secondly the way he is hitting the ball cannot promote topspin as there is no where near enough racquet head speed through the ball.
This guy is good. He is demonstrating how beginners can get the feel for top spin, no backswing, just concentrate on the contact point and brush up the back of the ball. The most difficult part for beginners in tennis is judging where to hit the ball, a backswing at this early stage of learning will compound this problem. Once beginners get the feel of the stroke, they naturally will add their own backswing. Peace and have fun on the tennis court.
@Oetomoepi@vijanatrix i agree completely with both of your comments. Im glad there are other people out there who just dont go around insulting every video that is out there.
thats even worse than the hitting through the ball video. and there is absolutely no spin on the ball anyway. he couldnt even push the ball into the court a lot were missing it. fair enough he is trying but dont come on here trying to teach something you cant even do and even worse something you cannot teach.
This isn't particularly good - there isn't sufficient follow though on the whip action and the balls are going way too high over the net - they'll just get volleyed away by the opposing player. Better coaching is on you tube elsewhere. Sorry.
Yes Ok I hear your Point heaven. But in my opinion Following through over your shoulder equlas more control. And using a continental grip equals more power and control from your wrist. And chebabka, well said. This video isnt good for people who want to play tennis.
With top spin people forget that you need to hold your Racquet in a certain way usually a continental grip and slightly adjusting the angle of the racquet. Move the racquet up across the ball and bring the racquet through over your shoulder. Simple. This video is rubbish, nt even doing it rite. Im only 14 and i know how to do it and i have won 2 tournaments and have gotten into 7 finals 5 semi's an 2 quarter's not bad for a 14 year old. And my Forehand top spin is my weapon, backhand my shield.
WTF usually a continental grip? Are you high dude? It doesn't necessarily have to follow through over your shoulder either. So if you have won so many tournaments then stop making yourself look bad.
...continental grip. Are you kidding me? I can hit topspin easily with a regular forehand grip. What kind of tournaments were those? Tournaments for kindergarteners?
Top spin doesn't always have to look so obvious. What I mean is... a shot with top spin can still look somewhat like any other shot. You just hold the racket differently so that you can naturally brush up the ball in your shot, right?
yeah...like feds backhand looks the same as his slice backhand when hes doing it...the finish is just diff...but to a player on the other side of the court he cant really see that hes just concentrating on the ball...same goes for forehand
You're right. i don't play in tournaments, but i have been playing several years now. when i get a god put-away shot, i always use topspin. u just have to brush the ball correctley and follow through a bit differently.
when u teach topspin please teach it right. ITs good but you have to have the right back swing and follow thru. When u hit like that (low to high) on a ball with good pace.. it will fly out. 100 % of the time .
i did it like that cause someone taught me like that....the way to do it is straight back(hip height) hit in front of you and then catch the follow thru like your catch a ball with your left hand .. stop teaching a force brush inside of a natural brush :p
he's not really trying to hit a backhand, hes just trying to show us that to develop a groundstroke, you need the the basics of it, which are shown by this and another video of his.
Yes, I know he's trying to teach us the swing but for all the people who go out there and try to learn from this are going to want to know what to do with their feet. And don't you think it'd be better if they saw what they're supposed to be doing with their feet while theyr hit a top spin backhand?
ok first of all if dosent really matter how you dress you play tennis or how you look and he's showing us simple swings and also not all people play the same
ok first of all if dosent really matter how you dress you play tennis or how you look and he's showing us simple swings and also not all people play the same
I appreciate him taking the time to upload an instructional video...
but it seems like the form on at least his forehand side is a bit off. He has no real follow through, doesn't use his non-dominant arm, doesn't rotate nearly enough, and the kind of topspin he puts on the ball is just loopy. Aggressive driving topspin is not put on the ball by a simple low-to-high stroke.
He is very informative. Watch the rest of his vids. He moves fine. Hes breaking it down to try to make it easy for people to learn/understand the process.
This guy is obviously pretty good; he has amazing control with that pretty heavy topspin. My guess is that he's trying to abreviate the swing for this tutorial.
Really good coach, of course, he just breaks down all steps for beginners. Make them can FEEL the balls first and do simplest thing first, if he shows all steps at one time, beginners can only hit AIR, not the balls.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
pff, your backhand is bad...
they are supposed to go just straight over the net with much more power... yours is just weak and way to high... every opponent would attack that shot!
The purpose of the videos in these series is to teach beginners how to hit a top spin shot. That's why I exaggerate and isolate certain parts of the stroke so that a beginner can really grasp the idea.
dude hes trying to teach people something, stop criticizing like a bitch, if you're so good why don't you copy and upload a video of the world championships or something. I bet beginners will learn A LOT from that.
This video is just a part of the whole series of videos teaching you the basics of forehand and backhand. There is no follow-through because I isolated the movement so that you can see where the spin comes from.
Follow-through is added in the later videos of this series and it happens naturally, you DON'T have to DO it.
I agree with the top comments but it would be nice if there was some verbal instructions to go with this video for us beginners who watch this and, like me, are thinking "ok...wtf is he doing?"

with top spin, try not to think of it as like your hitting through the ball...
think of it is like brushing a ball from left/bottom to up/right. this guy has demonstrated this in its basic form.
a professional player will swing his racket from back to front, and then right to left after contact has been made with the ball.
so remember, 'brushing the ball'...

people may say his techniqe is awful...it's a damn demonstration on how to do the techniqe, just because your jealous don't mean you can put people down that are better than you,
EWFAassociationHWFA 2 years ago
Idk why ppl are bashing this guy. He's very skilled. This is merely a demonstration teaching the technique behind a top spin based on the contact the racket must have when it hits the ball. If he were to hit the ball at a normal pace it would be difficult to see the motion.
there are way too many morons critiquing a dude who is just trying to show the basics...
theartsofebony 2 years ago 4
Well, because they didn't understood the purpous of an example.
Like when you show somehow how to make a movement with weights, you do not carry full load; you pick an easy one to show the idea and point the dangerous parts and things to avoid.
He might be doing a drill or something like that just to get the idea. Of course, he won't play like this. I don't think it's a peculiarly good idea to do this, but it still what he tries to do.

this video is not for beginners as beginners do not learn topspin, but timing and technique first. so in saying that, if this video does not apply to beginners then who does it apply to? no one! any player who has good technique and timing certainly wouldnt learn to hit spin like this. secondly the way he is hitting the ball cannot promote topspin as there is no where near enough racquet head speed through the ball.
hajduk19111 3 years ago
people have to learn topspin technique at one time or another.
get ur facts straight this teaches topspin form
after this u revert back to ur technique just with a slight altercation for topsin
BarelyListening15 3 years ago 4
This guy is good. He is demonstrating how beginners can get the feel for top spin, no backswing, just concentrate on the contact point and brush up the back of the ball. The most difficult part for beginners in tennis is judging where to hit the ball, a backswing at this early stage of learning will compound this problem. Once beginners get the feel of the stroke, they naturally will add their own backswing. Peace and have fun on the tennis court.
Oetomoepi 3 years ago 32
@Oetomoepi @vijanatrix i agree completely with both of your comments. Im glad there are other people out there who just dont go around insulting every video that is out there.
TheKingKenney 1 year ago
thats even worse than the hitting through the ball video. and there is absolutely no spin on the ball anyway. he couldnt even push the ball into the court a lot were missing it. fair enough he is trying but dont come on here trying to teach something you cant even do and even worse something you cannot teach.

it depends. when i first started almost all my hits were with lot of top spin. it feels natural for me
JinLost01 3 years ago
no, it just takes practice. you need to follow through all the way and the ball will have a great topspin on it, dont giv up.

This video isnt good for people who want to play tennis.

i wud only do this if i wanted to suck and look gay

Tencor09 3 years ago
With top spin people forget that you need to hold your Racquet in a certain way usually a continental grip and slightly adjusting the angle of the racquet. Move the racquet up across the ball and bring the racquet through over your shoulder. Simple. This video is rubbish, nt even doing it rite. Im only 14 and i know how to do it and i have won 2 tournaments and have gotten into 7 finals 5 semi's an 2 quarter's not bad for a 14 year old. And my Forehand top spin is my weapon, backhand my shield.
danielgee13 3 years ago
WTF usually a continental grip? Are you high dude? It doesn't necessarily have to follow through over your shoulder either. So if you have won so many tournaments then stop making yourself look bad.
HeavenInOblivion 3 years ago
lol continental grip for forehands and backhands? are you born in 1960?
tommygecko 3 years ago
...continental grip. Are you kidding me? I can hit topspin easily with a regular forehand grip. What kind of tournaments were those? Tournaments for kindergarteners?
abcdefghijkL0L 3 years ago
ya ok kid tennis isnt one of ur lil games like runescape
as so continetal grip?? wtf get in the time man u aint winnnin shit with that
tennisgenerationx 3 years ago
Top spin doesn't always have to look so obvious. What I mean is... a shot with top spin can still look somewhat like any other shot. You just hold the racket differently so that you can naturally brush up the ball in your shot, right?
raditztheradish 3 years ago
yeah...like feds backhand looks the same as his slice backhand when hes doing it...the finish is just diff...but to a player on the other side of the court he cant really see that hes just concentrating on the ball...same goes for forehand
rockerduff1231 3 years ago
You're right. i don't play in tournaments, but i have been playing several years now. when i get a god put-away shot, i always use topspin. u just have to brush the ball correctley and follow through a bit differently.

rastal200618 3 years ago

Drujmikaramaa 3 years ago
when u teach topspin please teach it right. ITs good but you have to have the right back swing and follow thru. When u hit like that (low to high) on a ball with good pace.. it will fly out. 100 % of the time .
i did it like that cause someone taught me like that....the way to do it is straight back(hip height) hit in front of you and then catch the follow thru like your catch a ball with your left hand .. stop teaching a force brush inside of a natural brush :p
lol

What the hell?
That's definitely not how you hit a backhand. My coach keeps telling me to get your left foot over. and get behind the ball.
Whoever that is is NOT getting their left foot over. I hope they fall over and break a bone for *trying* to teach people bad tennis habits.
xxGrey 3 years ago
he's not really trying to hit a backhand, hes just trying to show us that to develop a groundstroke, you need the the basics of it, which are shown by this and another video of his.
chenying702 3 years ago 3
Yes, I know he's trying to teach us the swing but for all the people who go out there and try to learn from this are going to want to know what to do with their feet. And don't you think it'd be better if they saw what they're supposed to be doing with their feet while theyr hit a top spin backhand?
xxGrey 3 years ago
umm is this guy tryin 2 show us simple strokes or is he for real?!

JonHwa 3 years ago
all u need to do is hit the ball harder and with more of a brush than u can achieve a real topspin shot

Really good coach, of course, he just breaks down all steps for beginners. Make them can FEEL the balls first and do simplest thing first, if he shows all steps at one time, beginners can only hit AIR, not the balls.

pff, your backhand is bad...
they are supposed to go just straight over the net with much more power... yours is just weak and way to high... every opponent would attack that shot!
paskoww 4 years ago
The purpose of the videos in these series is to teach beginners how to hit a top spin shot. That's why I exaggerate and isolate certain parts of the stroke so that a beginner can really grasp the idea.
TennisMindGame 4 years ago
dude hes trying to teach people something, stop criticizing like a bitch, if you're so good why don't you copy and upload a video of the world championships or something. I bet beginners will learn A LOT from that.
so pfff to you punk.
Prayzz 4 years ago
he does them all on purpose...read other comments before posting, plus at the beginner level, shots like that would beat them all haha
aeroprovinnie 4 years ago 4
This video is just a part of the whole series of videos teaching you the basics of forehand and backhand. There is no follow-through because I isolated the movement so that you can see where the spin comes from.
Follow-through is added in the later videos of this series and it happens naturally, you DON'T have to DO it.
TennisMindGame 4 years ago

you suck. one you should follow through and your topspin isn't that good considering the ball is going way over the net.
socca4life3000 4 years ago
apparently you have not seen any other of his videos, he is breaking down the shots so people who don't know how to add spin can actually do it.
