While that may be the right way to say Hawai'i in English, it is still a respectful and culturally sensitive thing to do to know the how to say a place name in it's original language. Saying it correctly is not "authentic" but politically correct. Like how reporters usually say Jorge as "hore hey", and not "Jorge". Firstly, the (') before the second i in Hawai'i is called an 'okina which indicates a glottal stop, or pause, before the other i is said. Secondly the w in Hawaiian makes a v sound.

If you want to sound like you're from Florida then thats how you say it.
