I can't stand all the controversy with this song. Whether it was inspired by LSD or John's son's drawing, either way, it's simply a timeless masterpiece.
for years this song made no sense to me, then all of a sudden i just looked at the nouns in the title lucy, sky, diamonds. from that i took the first letter of these 3 words and suddenly it all made sense. need i say more?
Beatles haircuts & clean fun. Then came pot. as 66' turned to 67', Acid followed, and as it altered the perception of those who took it, it changed the way the public viewed the Scene.
@freakypeople100 Well, that's strange. John DID give that explaniation for it, however, Paul gave a completely different story about it. It WAS about LSD! That's what the song is referring to! The Beatles (mostly John) were deep into the new drug culture then coming along, and LSD was the hot commodity for 1967. You're very niave, or stupid, or a strict Beatles' apologist to think otherwise.
I don't care if it is about LSD or not. The song is great, either way they had to have something expand their minds to write a song like this haha.. I love it...
Slow down and take it in, let your pupils manipulate what you know is there and not. Extinguish judgement, you're reborn with your fellow children everyday.
The song isn't a reference to LSD. He said it in an interview that Julian came home with a picture of a girl in the sky. He asked what it was and Julian said, "It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds." (Who recently died, RIP) And John thought it was beautiful and wrote a song about. He didn't realize it that the title had LSD on it til years later, so then he started checking other song titles to make sure there wasn't a drug reference (that was the joke he made during the interview.)
The Beatles truly offered / offers the world an awakening to light and truthfullness. They had the ability to bring about freedom of the mind and will of humanity. To step outside the box and offer each of us, "Hey, there is more to life than this system we have fallen (fall in) to... rather than had the choice to step away from." Noticing your free will and to do what you love to do without hurting another is the universal mantra of love. I wasn't around to see them become but I am here to
This song is about a little girl named Lucy from Julian Lennon's class. She, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, died of Lupus a couple months ago and this little sick child, Lucy, inspired, not only a great song, but Julian Lennon's interest in fund raising for Lupus research. The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes is in reference to a picture she drew for classmate Julian. You all should be ashamed of yourselves to think this is about drugs.
@MrsDollMerie Jesus fucking Christ! Get off your high horse.
Just because people are getting incredible kicks from things you will never know doesn't mean you have the right to think that you are superior to them. You're not more moral, more intelligent or even more wise because you are living the mild life.
Try looking at the video for this song or shit even listen to all of the lyrics. If you still want to remain close-minded and ignorant then that's cool. Stay small.
@MrsDollMerie even if this isn't about drugs, it's sure as hell related to LSD... kinda a weird, don't you think?... I mean... LSD may be an acronym for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds ! That's why LSD has the slang name of Lucy !

@MissBadGirl95 lol... I heard this song before I knew what it was called and instantly thought about acid... then I found this by chance, and i was like WOW.. its Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds... lolol ironic
If anyone here has seen QI there is an episode where they mention this song and they talk about how the fact that the title spells out LSD is just pure coincidence and the actually song refers to a drawing by John Lennon's daughter I believe of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds"
Is amused at how many people just got the LSD reference!?!?!? But its not just about that though like any song take your own meaning from it!!! I named my daughter after it!
maybe it wasnt directly inspired by LSD... but they knew they were making it seem like it was. those guys have tripped, they knew this was a trippy song. so indirectly it reflects tripping culture but it doesnt have any actual literal meaning. its just a cool song for anyone to enjoy and interpret themselves.
C'mon do u think this song is actually about j.lennons. son's drawing? No I mean look @ the name of this song , initials LSD. And the song makes no sense? Can it be more obvious?
@optey i also see the LSD connection here but thats not what the song is about its about a picture that johns son drew in school and his son called it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
@jabjab619 To me the two are not mutually exclusive. In other words yes maybe there was such a drawing but I also think John saw the title and realized that it could also be a good title for a song about LSD.The song is a psychedelic song. All you have to do is listen to it to realize that it descibes an acid trip. It is no secret that John and the other Beatles had taken LSD. Had someone like Donny Osmond wrote then I would not think it was about acid but were talking about John Lennon
* sense. The book was based on a mushroom trip which would make the song easily confused with LSD. There's a lot more to it then that but just read Rolling Stones synopses of it lol.
I'm one of the few people who actually don't believe Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is about a drug trip. If anyone has "Rolling stones The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs" magazine it's in there. Lennon was open in later years about drug reff's in his songs and even at the time, so why not this one? Alice In Wonderland was Lennon's fav novel and the songs actually supposedly a parody on that, when Alice gets in the boat with the sheep and goes down the river. If you read the novel it makes a lot of
the creative animation in Yellow Submarine is unparallelled..creativity like that will never be seen again, and it was done over 40 years ago..then when u add the humour, wit and depth..well...the modern day writers don't stand a chance
@RyanLLcoolster Paul didnt write this song. And if you listen to the things John describes, alot of it is what you'd find on a little kids art project.rt
I can't believe anyone can be so dumb as to not see the LSD connection here. Well that's fair of me to say, not everyones done LSD. I can say that the cellophane flowers have taken me away a few times. Man, those were the days, but we all gotta grow up somtime.
i believe this was after a fellow musician, possibly from the beach boys said"The beatles make good music but they dont say anything" so they wrote deeper meaning to songs.
What I must find tonight before I sleep: My Sgt Peppers album. Sgt Pepper "pictodisk" my VHS and or DVD copy of Yellow Submarine, my Blue Meany figures also.
Why the debate about whether it is or isn't about LSD? It was written during a period where LSD was the drug of choice, by a band that consumed their fair share, and is deliberately trippy according to the style of music at that time. Seems pretty obvious to me.
@0037LaCkEySpLuEy Its true thats where he got the name from but its a song about LSD, theres another interview with Paul where he says it was written about LSD and he says if you can't figure that out by the lyrics then he don't know what to tell you!
@0037LaCkEySpLuEy this title has double meaning:) - paul mccartney says in an 2002 interview : this is simple word game . and yeah .. later he says that : this title is true .. its about LSD :)
@0037LaCkEySpLuEy geez dude, calm down. you're the one questioning my source of information for something that i didn't even say, and telling me that i was wrong about that same thing that i didn't say. not to mention the overly obnoxious manner in which you did so.
@0037LaCkEySpLuEy that is exactly what happened why would he lie to all who think its about lsd you guys are just reading the damn title listen to the truth for once
I believe it doesn't damn amtter if it's about an acid trip, they're nto telling anyone to TAKE LSD, they'r ejust writing a damn good song. Get over it. (Personally I bleive in johns side of the story though :) )
This is from the mouth of Lennon himself. THE SONG HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LSD, IT NEVER DID. It originated from a picture his son brought home from school that he called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". John thought it was so great he wrote a song about it. That's it.
@TannahPhantom That's a good point, but he seemed to be adamant about it and I know how frustrated he used to get with people over analyzing his songs, so I'm going to take his word for it.
I guess your opinion is yours and I dont wanna argue over Youtube haha. But I think because there was so much controversy about the use of drugs and what not, There may have been a drawing and there may not have been. In my opinion there wasnt and the beatles have admitted doing acid so I believe its about acid.
@TannahPhantom Fair enough, you have a valid point, and unfortunately John's not around to ask. But, I am glad you don't want to fight over youtube heh. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree ha ha.
i have the beatles biography and its both his son brought home a pic and said it was of his friend lucy in the sky with diamonds he thought it looked like an acid trip and a song was born these clips are from thr yellow submarine movie a must watch!
oh my god. you guys are all stupid. dont listen to what anyone tells you. just listen to the lyrics of this song, and you will obviously know that this is about acid, theres no doubt in my mind that its about acid. theres nothing else these lyrics could mean but an acid trip.
@iiAmTheBombBitch Agreed....why cant people just accept that the beatles were heavily influenced by Psychedelic drugs during this time period? Its the fuckin 60s for piss sakes, everybody and there grandma dropped a couple milligrams. Nothing wrong with that imo.
the woman the Beatles based this on was a four year old who was friends with john lennon's son. he brought a picture home that he had made with "kaleidoscope eyes" and diamonds all around her in the sky. she just died a few weeks ago.
Its not look it up. The "Lucy" who inspired this song was Lucy O'Donnell (later Lucy Vodden), who was a classmate of John's son Julian Lennon when he was enrolled at the private Heath House School, in Weybridge, Surrey. It was in a 1975 interview that Lennon said "Julian came in one day with a picture about a school friend of his named Lucy. He had sketched in some stars in the sky and called it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."
From Weeklystandard Magezine - In an interview with Uncut magazine, ex-Beatle Paul McCartney has finally admitted that "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" really was about LSD.
why would anyone would have ever beleived the whole lil girl drawing story,.. quite obvious was a cover up story
it might have been written for a girl but he made it awful trippey if you ask me maybe he had a double meaning to the song and thats why there is a debate, you know the songs good when people aurgue over what its about
This song is about lsd

It was part of the psychedelic movement, so obviously they were entertaining LSD, you only have to do a GCSE modern history course to know that

This is from the mouth of Lennon himself. THE SONG HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LSD, IT NEVER DID. It originated from a picture his son brought home from school that he called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". John thought it was so great he wrote a song about it. That's it.

@NPC514 Is it really that difficult to believe that he lied?
TannahPhantom 1 year ago
@TannahPhantom That's a good point, but he seemed to be adamant about it and I know how frustrated he used to get with people over analyzing his songs, so I'm going to take his word for it.

@NPC514
I guess your opinion is yours and I dont wanna argue over Youtube haha. But I think because there was so much controversy about the use of drugs and what not, There may have been a drawing and there may not have been. In my opinion there wasnt and the beatles have admitted doing acid so I believe its about acid.
TannahPhantom 1 year ago
@TannahPhantom Fair enough, you have a valid point, and unfortunately John's not around to ask. But, I am glad you don't want to fight over youtube heh. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree ha ha.

The images Lennon used in the song were inspired by the imagery in the book Alice In Wonderland.
In 2004, McCartney addressed the issue of drugs in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: "'Day Tripper,' that's one about acid.
So why would they say Day Tripper is about Acid, but then constantly deny Lucy is about drugs? Maybe because its NOT.

Err i watched a documentary and it said its a cartoon not alice in wonderland go to 60s now stfu
choobnoob11 2 years ago
The Song has NOTHING to do with LSD.
So stop passing falsehoods and have truths.
Yes The Beatles did all kinds of drugs, but they NEVER had any probably admitting a song was about drugs. This song is NOT.

it is serch it up up
hockeyhabs100 2 years ago
Its not look it up. The "Lucy" who inspired this song was Lucy O'Donnell (later Lucy Vodden), who was a classmate of John's son Julian Lennon when he was enrolled at the private Heath House School, in Weybridge, Surrey. It was in a 1975 interview that Lennon said "Julian came in one day with a picture about a school friend of his named Lucy. He had sketched in some stars in the sky and called it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."
cmharveyjr 2 years ago
Paul said on an interview that it was pretty obvious that the song was about LSD, but it also was inspired in Julian's friend Lucy.

From Weeklystandard Magezine - In an interview with Uncut magazine, ex-Beatle Paul McCartney has finally admitted that "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" really was about LSD.
