these are for the low japanese laborers in the future. japan knew this would happen, so the government told companys to build robots. there has always been a fascination with robots in japanese history, its apparent in their cartoons and movies, so alot of japanese embrace these innovations and accept them
The acceleration due to technology is felt asymmetrically in society. There won't simply be an increasing wealth gap; with eugenic enhancements the children of elites will be vastly superior to lowly human animals in every way, an exponentially increasing gap with each successive generation. The next step will be culling the herd. Not having a job will be the least of your concerns. If you're not a super genius they may have a position for you in the zoo -- on display as "Homo Sapiens 1.0".
Do the Japanese know what their doing. Most people in the world still have manual labor jobs. Many Companies have become Giant faceless corporation where CEO`s come and go and the number 1 goal is to make the stock holders rich. They don`t care about firing millions. Fast Foods Chains, Supermarkets, Factory workers. The world will be in chaos. Unemployments of 30% even in developed Nations. A future where people will have to compete with ever more advanced Robots to make a living. Very Sad.
Nothing new going on here - farmers having been ploughing fields with machines for years. And in a few more centuries, people will be worrying about a different class of "work" that is being taken over by machines. It's a pretty routine cycle throughout the entirety of human existence. People just *think* it's a special digital/silicon age related deal because we're too close to the wood to see the trees. People see their own time/era subjectively differently from the rest of history.
He he, the robots will fill those jobs to. Shure the factory jobs will be the first to go. But then its the designers, management etc. Getting a good social security arragement will be more important than getting a good job (wich you eventually loose anyways). So you better start practicing faking disability! It will be the only stable source of income in the future.
Well, the newest modern jets fall out of the sky if the computer dies because they are no longer aerodynamic enough to glide, let alone fly without computer control. BUT... and it's a big but... the issue is about intelligent decision-making, and even the bots above were programmed by an intelligent operator, right? Dexterity is interesting, but just the tip of the iceberg. If that.
as far as i can tell nothing really. This is what I believe is going on. Robot 1 finds matching color blocks and ensures the lettering is faceing out. Robot two simply screws the two pieces together. and robot 3 checks the final work and places the characters in order to spell out something. Amazing that it can identify the letters.
Letter recognition is pretty regular stuff - the police use automatic number-plate recognition on moving vehicles all the time, no big deal by today's standards. I suspect the clever bit is how the blocks are manipulated by the "hands" in an ad hoc manner -- and if done with only sight rather than a sense of touch, then pretty good indeed.
Do you know why the japanese want to engineer robots so badly?
It's because birth rates are going down for them... And their culture is one of old people hating to be a burden on their society. In the old days, when a person got too old, they'd take them to the mountain and let them die (there are many movies on this in japan!!).
I thought this was interesting seeing this. It isn't because they can, but because they must!
As societies progress and women become more powerful, fertility rates tend to decrease as women opt to work rather than have families (as the societies typically don't make allowances for both).
But as the society progresses even further and makes allowances for reproduction so that it doesn't disadvantage the family (ie: on-site childcare, maternity leave, tellecommuting, etc) then fertility rates tend to increase again.
Okay now I know I'm not the first person to notice this am I? But in the video it looks like the robot is nodding in satisfaction or something. Pay attention to the one fartherst to the right and you'll see what I mean.
It does this at 1:20 - 1:30 and then AGAIN at 1:50. When they slow the robots down you can see it nod a third time at 2:28. The robot does it a fourth time at 3:00, basically every time it examines/tests whatever those square tile things are.
hard to say whether it's actually analyzing the piece and giving a programmed "acceptable or non-acceptable" response, or if it's just programmed to pretend to look and then nod regardless.
They look like little t-rexs

They need more arms. Soldering takes 4 hands. One to hold the part, one to hold the wire, one to hold the soldering gun and one to hold the solder.
