One of the reasons why court tv shows are so popular is b/c they're highly profitable. Think about it- every episode they DON'T have to hire "Actors & Actresses" or T.V Writers b/c each litigant comes in with their own story and mixed emotions. Each episode usually has 2 cases so even in the worst case scenario that the Plaintiff wins the maximum award, the show ONLY pays out $10,000.00. Judge Judy is a one woman show and even with her huge salary they're STILL saving money!
