I have never seen the whole episode but everyone seems to be acting not as free and funny as usual. It might just look like it for the viewers. Betty didn't smile or laugh about one single answer they gave, though I thought they were pretty good.

Is this the beginning of the fight between Richard Dawson and everyone else? When Richard gives his answer, he seems genuinely nasty. Gene really seems offended too. If you notice (as at other times) when Gene is uncomfortable/angry/offended, he smiles but doesn't laugh or talk for a minute. Here, he doesn't even smile. And I agree that Betty looks uncomfortable.

I think by this point both Betty and Allen were tired of being picked on. They were always made fun of because they were "mis-matched". Not that they cared, because I don't think anything was strong enough to break them apart, but they never got a break on this show. They always made them seem like they were unhappy, when they weren't. I think it probably just got annoying sometimes.
