As for his remarks about England itself, he's referring to his having grown up impoverished in a country that touted itself as a land of plenty, when that was only a myth for most people.

Furthermore, if you think his remarks are so far off, trying talking to the Irish and Scottish people that grew up in England. Their sentiments are pretty similar.
