Born Again is my favourite Sabbath album. It's easily Sabbath's most underrated work. Ian Gillan's vocals were AMAZING on the album/tour! Too bad Sabbath only did the one record with this version of the band.
Spandau Ballet...??? During a Sabbath Interview? Man Who did they think was watching the interview. Spandau Ballet Fans? MTV was even Stupid back then, but at least they had Music on it
At 5:31 The Guy brings up to Ian about the doctor telling him not to sing for a year. Ian then said It was 6 months. He should have taken a year off to rest his voice. His voice was pretty much shot when he reunited with Purple a year later.
Great interview. I almost forgot that Ian Gillen fronted Sabbath. Loved him with Deep Purple!!! Thank you, Alex. mark Goodman gets on my nerves, though!!!
this interviewer is a conscending moron. "what's Bev's role in the band?" they all look at each other. i'm thinking, "um, the drummer, you fucking idiot?"
@HenryCovert He was probably trying to ask them if Bev's place in the band was permanent or not, but chose to fumble it istead. At least he came back a more straightforward way of asking the question after that. Yeah, Mark Goodman was a moron, I do agree with that. lol
I always loved gillan with black sabbath...he is clearly better than ozzy and dio...he blew away them in two seconds...listen to the version of 'black sabbath' or 'war pigs' from worchester '83...just incredible vocals, interpretation and screams...not to mention the studio songs 'born again' and 'disturbing the priest'...
LORD....could Mark Goodman have been a LITTLE more of a goddamn TOOL!??? No wonder Tony and Geez didn't say much...and the look on Ian's face half the time.....LMAO!!! He's lookin' at Goodman like..."..thanks for the coverage mate, but you're quite the knob..."
Wow, the interviewer is truly awful. Imagine having Black Sabbath on an interview and telling the band a Spandau Ballet video is about to come on. I know the guy isn't into programming but come on, there had to be a better way to make that kind of statement.
you know, this interview, & Geezer's attitude (Ive got a black mass to go to , 10/10) shows my theory:
many people believe that Geezer "fucked up" Born Again's sound, the way the record sounded. I BELIEVE that Geezer looked around, and realized "ok, back in the 70's, we fucked up cause we followed the pop world. Let's look at the underground". There he found Venom, Discharge,Tank, who knows what else... Witchfinder General?and decided to distort his bass sound. This record is HEAVY like the old
good points, but actually Geezer's been using heavy distortion on his bass since 1969. remember 'N.I.B.'? he had that sound before Lemmy and way before Cliff burton (who usually gets all the credit for pioneering it). i don't agree that Sabbath in the 70s "fucked up because they followed the pop world" because they didn't. but i totally agree about them looking to their heirs & 'out-heavying' them. which they still do today. H & H wipes the floor with bands young enough to be their grand-kids.
Deep Sabbath Born Again is one of my favorite albums of all time. The lyrics are cool and intelligent.
Ian's vocals are wicked and haunting.
The screams are insainly awesome.
The music equaled that greatness & made a classic record.
I saw Purple a few years back and Gillan sounded better than I'd ever heard him. I love all Sabbath but if I had to rank #1 Dio #2 Gillan #3 Ozzy #4 Martin #5 Hughes
#6 Ray Gillan. Hail to all Sabbath fans, no matter who our favorite is, we all win.
excellent post. agreed on all counts. i'd rank them the same as you, in the context of Sabbath. jusas singers i'd rank them Dio, Gillan, Hughes, Martin & Gillen tied (?), & Ozzy.
I think it is sad that in early 80s Sabbath had to stoop to doing interviews on MTV. They never needed promotion or air-play to sell albums in the 1970s. Back then, doing an interview like this was beneath them. Anyway, I enjoy watching this just the same. I saw this tour and I thought it was great seeing them play "Smoke On the Water" for their encore! Yes, it's true, they did.
the true Sabbath singers are also the essential singers for any hard rock, and heavy metal fan, that being Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillan.
I think sabbath had 3 singers which fit perfect in the band, first the great Ozzy and dio and gillan!! and butler was a great bass player and their org. drummer bill ward who died,he was a great drummer at the time!!!
Interesting interview. The Sabbs don't seem into it, and Mark Goodman is really struggling to get these guys to open up. A nice gem from the classic days of MTV.

shit album i dont like ian one bit and i think the paranoid album kicks ass anyday but my best album is heaven and hell i liked sabbath much better when dio was in it.
ian did good on born again. dont listen to critics and judge for urself. born again is a good album. when geezer did the mixing it got a lil worse but still enjoyable.
just recently i downloaded a shitload of sabbath that i didnt have before, I never heard much from Born Again (wasn't interested before) but its great!...it just totally fit the band at the time, and "trashed" fucking rips!
@misconduckt its ok cause of gillians voice....just cant compare to albums like volume 4, sabatoge, black sabbath/black sabbath and the paranoid album....not to mention master of reality and sabbath bloody sabbath.....actually your comment is pretty stupid the more i think about it.......shit technical ectasy was even better ...you dont know sabbath if you think this is the best album....or you just got a hard on for deep purple......which is admirable...
@cholulasaucehot man, Born Againe was once in eternity collaboration of two styles. Music of Sabbath with Wailing shrieks of Gillan. It is ceirtanly not their best, but this album truly rocks hard.
I seem to recall hearing it was a co-incidence. Both Sabbath and Spinal Tap had the Stonehenge idea at the same time. Of course, that may be false as after all someone posted on here that Bill Ward was dead and that certainly is not true! Check the other Ian Gillan interviews, I think that's where I heard it.
Tony still had some great riffs for this album, which gives the fans who want those powerful heavy songs happy. Great stuff. I can find something in all incarnations of "Sabbath" that works for me. :)
sabbath with gillan was just as great as the ozzy and dio lineups, and yeah they were all like they wanted to hide, gillan hated being in sabbath although he remains good friends with tony, geezer and bill, and has even developed a friendship with Ronnie James Dio too, im not sure what ian thinks of ozzy though lol
Born Again was a decent enough album, but it's interesting how when asked about members in the band, the tour etc there's a tremendous ambivalence and it's written all over the bandmembers' faces, too. Gillan looks like he wants to go and hide somewhere... Later reports indicated that he wasn't comfortable in Sabbath. He hated the album cover, thought the album was mixed poorly and the whole thing was a big debacle. Doomed lineup! And it was the last good album the band released.

there's a certain darkness in the sound on this album that sabbath in my opinion has never been able to recreate. maybe it was a mixture or Ian's vocals with Tony's riffs or sound setup or all three don't know. I just love it.
Mark Goodman is a tool/dolt..."we have long time member Tony Iommi"...??? how about original founding member along with Geezer...do your homework Goodman...you Spandau Ballet loving geek!!!
This album is SOOO good, maybe because it's so out there, with all the Gillan laughter and the dark ambient stuff. It's sick either way, and I hate Black Sabbath purists for being ignorant about this album.
I saw the band on the Born Again tour and they rocked! Ian's vocals on the album are awesome and Born Again, in my opinion, is one of my favorite Sabbath albums and one of their heaviest!
im with michael,i saw this concert.born again was out and out insane"disturbin the priest" shows that noone,..and i mean no one,can do bone chilling screams like ian gillan.dont believe me? listen to "sweet child in time" when he was with purple, live version is the one you wanna hear.this whole album was great, the concert was great.but im a die hard sabbath fan.

Damn I love this band and I don't care which form they take. Born Again is one of the heaviest Sabbath albums IMO.
I would kill to have Ian's hair, lol.

I agree 100% with you.

Awesome stuff, anymore Sabbath Interviews? Born Again is a unique and wonderful album despite a horrible production.

the album is not bad but did you hear his voice on the tour?

Hey Matt, why complain about the tour when you can scrap all the junk and throw on the Reading sounboard boot and be blown out of your mind?
(some people really amaze me, you only need one example from that tour to go by)

I know the "Born Again" album has been hammered as Sabbath's worst album, but I always thought it was their heaviest and one of my favorites.

When 'Born Again' came out in 1983 I thought it was the most evil album ever released..Lol.
