likes/ dislikes... yah yah... you can please all of the people some of the tyne... but not all the parmeasan most of the time... you can meat ball the pea pods some of the... hang on... this is a great tune. before Bowie what was there? (other than all the things, obviously)
The story is that the earth is dying. There are five years left. Ziggy comes to earth and becomes a rock star. He has a hopeful message. For the people he becomes a false prophet and gets a big ego. He ends up destroying himself.
Great Song it takes you back .Although I think Bowie dosent want to go back. There is A good boot called Lost & Forgotten. He left along long time ago Berlin Bowie. Still the Man
I love this song so much. Its the most wonderful song on this earth for ever . I love Bowie for writing this lines. And Brian Molko covered it so good.
dave just called me yesterday, asked me if i would like to go to dinner at his house with angie., i said i couldnt cuz i hade to visit mark bowlens family.
@BadMoviesNow Ironically, most closet feel the need to "bash" queers to vaildfate to themselves that they are not closet cases, which, they really are...so what brings you here, closet queer?
@BadMoviesNow Yes because that line is defitly rascist isn't it...he said the word black, it's not exactly critisizing black people is it? People wouldn't have viewed it as racist if he were to say "and if the white hadn't of pulled her off"
I would have thought that until I heard another of his unrealeased songs. (Sweet head) where he again starts up a song with "Spic" and other random racist shit. Now he may not be a ignorant lady man any more but he was back then. Hell didn't he hang around with that guy that doesn't know what a shirt is? Also how stupid is your comment? Why would a white guy said if a white hadn't pulled her back? That man was striped of his heroism the moment he was labeled as a color.
@BadMoviesNow You make out as though he is extremley racist, hardly American History X is it...I really don't think stating a colour is racism, If he were to say stuff along the lines of 'Black/White/Olive men shouldn't have rights or they should all be killed'. Then yes, I would agree. This song, along with many of his others was written in the 70's, it was released in 1972. Not many people would like to admit it but the 70's society was fairly racist considering racism had just been called...
@BadMoviesNow upon within the 60's because of the whole Human rights thing, so many people were still fairly racist because it was 'the norm' at that paticular time,do not forget he was born in1947and he had obviosly grown up during the 50's and 60'sback then it wasn't 'the norm' to see a 'black' walking in the street, so whether people like to admit it, those years were fairly racist. Now,if you have just come on this video to complain about David Bowie and his songs I suggest you move on.:)
Did you read my first comment? He went thru a racist phase REGARDLESS of the "times". Many other rock/metal people from that time and they never sang or said racist/homobhobic shit like him. I think it is ironic a once racist mf marries a woman whom he would have described as a color rather than just a "woman".
@BadMoviesNow And all I'm saying is it's hardly Amarican History X...Theres been far worst people then David Bowie, who mantions what? The word 'black'..
and if you came on here to complain about who David Bowie was and is...Not much point really because noone really cares about other peoples opinions are, there on this site to listen to his and others music and don't really want to see people critisizing in any slight way possible...
...AHX? Why are you bringing up a shitty movie? All I'm saying kid is that the song is racist you can't see it. All I said was that this song is plagued by those two comments. Oh and such remarks/lyrics aren't exclusive to this one song but to say SO??? Just means you
1) have no empathy
2) fanboy
You have to grow up. As long as there is a comment to be posted I will post. Criticism exists for a reason. Bowie's wife prob chews him out over his older songs, lol pussy.
@kessie184 Smart one, it's quite obvious that my IQ is not below 100, excluding the obvious attempts at insulting, I bought up 'AHX' to show you that there isn't a comparison, I would have thought 'blacks' would have been more offended at this sort of racism rather then the word 'black, I never said it was a good movie. All I'm saying is that this song is hardly racist, if not at all. The song was not intended to be racist at all.
@kessie184 If you say that you may also say that he was a homophobe for using the word 'queer'..sigh..such discrimination there isn't there?
And considering your use of the word ignorant 'lady man' just proves that you are not one to critisize. But I am aware that criticism is good in some ways...no matter how ridiculous.
like this if you believe that if the world was really "dieing", that everyone would freak out, and massive riots would happend, but then this song would come on, and everyone would come and relax because there hearing the best music ever!
@stonelove919 yep!and this is as good as it gets!!!pinups, images whatever!!as much as the beatles changed the whole damn shebang, david bowie set the scene for so much that came after!!ziggy stardust is one of the greatest albums ever !
@stonelove919 Amen to that my friend. Bowie was unique in making and performing his own music and style. I wouldn't know wich band or artist I could compare to Bowie? You? :)
@Zackkbum Really... I figured it was part of the album concept. Ziggy Stardust steps in to give hope to the people in the five years left until the world ends. Thats pretty fucking interesting though, I wanna look into it.
I'm Brazilian.Listening to this while reading about the decision of our Supreme Court to legalize gay marriage was one of the most beautiful experiences i've ever had.
@youngie123 Yes, it is. And I like the words and tune as well. I never said it wasn't a good song. What kind of football hooliganism ya' got planned for the weekend?
@11pinrelay seasons finished, im off to slice up some cricket supporters. Is that a knife? yes you slag, and itll make light work of this brie in my hamper.
Also Bowie's sexual ambiguity was predictive programming, beta testing, for the unisex bathrooms in university dorms, queerism with its intrinsic sterility, and trangenderism (WTF?) of today.
This song is propaganda and it's commentary on propaganda. Nearly four decades ago Bowie told us we had five years before we killed the earth. A year ago Chuckles Windsor, Prince of Wales told us we had "a thousand days to save the planet." They're both full of shite and both well know it. The earth isn't going anywhere; we are.
@the2009guy@andrew19vato In another video here on YouTube, taken from a talk show where Bowie performed "Five Years," the host says Bowie has just told her that the inspiration for the song came from an unusual dream. And I read somewhere else (can't remember where) that the dream had something to do with his father. So I imagine that during some particularly tense/nervwracking time in his life, he had a dream with all these intense apocalyptic images in it and just wrote them into a song.
@kl990 I agree with you. This is probably my favorite off this album, and I DO mean to say album. I was surpised that some people, supposed Bowie fans, that didn't particularly like this tune. "F" them...
according to the song earth's, apparently only have five last years before it'll be completely destroyed, i think that there's a hiding message in the song's lyrics, which is far deeper than the literal meaning, that earth's in it's last five years
When this came out we were stoned for the next 10 years it seems. It reminds me of the taste of cigarettes, pot, beer, coke (not the soft drink), bennies, and every crappy chemical dope you can imagine. Still, I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
I think I wore out the album when I got it in 1974. It's still moving and simply amazing. There is no music out there today that can really compare to Bowie. It still brings me to tears.
very few musical recordings are timeless----this one is-- when they write the history of music names that will be there are motzart elvis beatles and david bowiei
Love this song! I'm still having trouble believing that there are so many people in my year who've never even heard of David Bowie though! Shocking! =O
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! As a young black girl when I found this album I was so in awe of the sound and uniqueness of David. It was so different from everything I had every known. I have been in love with his sound ever since. Thanks for posting.
This entire album is gold. Changed my perception of music. however im sure the x i was on the first time i heard had a little to do with how i felt. still......GOLD!
I'm 13, and i've been a Bowie fan since I was 11, and god, this song is amazing. If people my age today would stop listening to shit and listen to David Bowie or The Beatles, I think it would truly make them better people.
as a teenager (35 years ago) Bowie was my idol.Later when I had 2 daughters I was eager to introduce them to his music. At age 5 and 6 I would make them dance around the living room to this ..teaching them the actions to each line ..close your eyes and imagine it if you will..my poor little girls pushing through an imaginary market square with crocodile tears ..and raising up their tiny 5 fingers each time Bowie sang '5 years thats all we've got' ha ha dispite this they turned out quite normal
let's face it if you hate all of Bowie's output then why just not call yourself a "tiny minded gay hatter" Arsehole's

An incredibly sad yet happy song at the same time by my thoughts.
It starts out so incredibly sad with mention to the end of the world, a female who lost her mind and went voilent...
...And then it reminds us to stay positive no matter how short our time is. It's enough to make me weep. And it does.
Why does no one promote such thought inducing music on the hit radio stations anymore?

I'm studying this in my University degree. Almost 40 years later and the song is still so interesting and arousing.
