  • Have you read the novel mate?

  • Mate keep these vids up. Excellent work!

  • Great video buddy

  • @666hill0ck666 cool, glad you liked it man

  • This is a fantastic movie. I watched the original and for some reason i didnt enjoy it was much as the final cut. I understood this film more than I did before and its an incredible and immersive movie.

  • @superhuman295 it really is, and like you said, the Final Cut truly puts the finishing touches on a slightly flawed, but nonetheless brilliant film. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to Ridley Scott's Prometheus.

  • @thebrb30000 me too. i watch the trailer alot and it looks like a return to classic yet real science fiction

  • Brilliant video discussion mate. I've only seen the film once and I learnt a few things about the plot from watching this. Can't wait to see Blade Runner again. Also really looking forward to your next review.

Considering all the mystery and unexplored plot threads, do you think Blade Runner is better left as a stand alone film? Or are you interested and happy about the forthcoming sequel?

  • @IceCreamSuit I actually would be excited about seeing a Blade Runner sequel, on the strict grounds that Ridley Scott directs it. If anyone else attempted to direct it, I wouldn't be interested. I just have a lot of faith in Ridley Scott, and I feel that he wouldn't make a stupid, cash-in sequel, but rather an intelligent film that explores more of the cinematic world he created in the first place, similar to what he's doing with PROMETHEUS.

  • @IceCreamSuit ..This was great, and I'd like to add Prometheus does indeed open up the inevitable question of a sequel or "pre-quel" to Blade Runner, and I would also argue, Blade Runner is better left as a stand alone film. I would add the misfortune of Blade Runner's debut, was simply timing. The film debuted the same year as E.T. which ran away with the box office that year...and it came out during an era that really hoped to escape from the weary dread of the hung-over 70s Vietnam era

  • @invincibleironman3 Yeah, E.T. kinda took away from Blade Runner's debut, as well as The Thing. 1982 was a great year for cult-cinema, no doubt about it.

  • hey barry i think you should do a review or video discusiion of films like DAS BOOT or platoon

  • @blo1able I wouldn't mind doing Platoon, but that's kind of a touchy subject, the Vietnam War. I'd just have to make sure that I wouldn't trivialize any of the truly grim aspects of that particular conflict. It's a great film though.

  • @SlideDownMyMachete I totally understand. Blade Runner is a polarizing film. And I actually feel the opposite regarding Brazil. I'm soooo bored by that movie, lol. I have film-buff friends that think I'm an idiot for not liking Brazil, but oh well. That's how it goes :)

  • You nailed it.

  • @OttyOttyOtty Thanks! This one took me awhile to do, so I appreciate the positive response :)

  • 12:20 lol. Blade Runner is one of my all time favourite films. As for the various versions, I think each one improves on what has gone before. I remember seeing the Director's Cut when it came out in the cinema. I was seriously sick with the flu but dragged myself along not wanting to miss Blade Runner on the big screen. I was amazed to see people walking out half way through. Goes to show it's not to everyone's taste.

  • @davidscribe Some people just don't get Blade Runner. I saw it once at a screening for a media course in college, and NOBODY liked it besides me. I can't believe people would walk out on Blade Runner. It's slow paced, sure, but to just give up and walk out on a classic like that? It just goes to show that most people are idiots :)

  • @thebrb30000 Another really great in-depth review on one of my favorite films. Fantastic work! And btw, I agree with you on Brazil. I love some of Gilliam's latter work, but Brazil puts me to sleep every time. I've never made it through that or Delicatessen, another poorly plotted but overly art directed film.

  • @TheJillkill lol, glad I'm not alone on Brazil. I'm hot and cold on Gilliam's overall filmography. I'd take 12 Monkeys over Brazil any day.

  • Excellent video Barry. For some reason, your new video did not come up on the subscriptions. Fantastic discussion for Blade Runner. I've always been a fan of the film and having the 5-Disc special edition, I can see the different aspects of what Ridley Scott was trying to tell the audience. i always believed Harrison's character was a replicant and the film definitely deserves it's cult following. Thanks for doing this video and fuck George Lucas

  • @MrRamone420 Thanks Chris! Hope all is well. Yeah, George Lucas has pissed all over our childhood memories, and I'm not very happy about it. Where's Roy Batty when you need him, so he can pluck out some eyeballs? :D

  • Great review, man.

    Lucas as Tyrell?! Brilliant!

  • @avastyer Thanks! I have to admit, there are parallels :)

  • You're back finally! Blade Runner is most definitely one of the most beautiful science-fiction films, and one of my favorite films of all time. I do though have to revisit it though, you definitely made me think more about it.

  • @thatmovieguy777 try to watch The Final Cut on bluray. It's amazing

  • @thebrb30000 I'm still unsure about switching over to bluray, but i will definitely try to get a chance to watch the blu ray style.

  • I actually watched your video last night in bed on my iphone but was too tired to comment but I gave you the thumbs up which is still 4 stars on the iphone ha.

Your reviews are always so well written and expressed, and I don't think there has been a review of yours that I've disliked. This is no different, great review on one of the best sci-fi films ever made in my opinion. The blu-ray of Blade Runner is incredible! So visually stunning and it always stays on your mind.

  • @Absolutesublime1 Thanks Jay! That's very kind of you. And I agree, the blu-ray of Blade Runner is so great. I've always appreciated Blade Runner, but the Final Cut on blu-ray took it to the next level.

  • Blade Runner is a masterpiece, and you did a great job disscussing the reasons why this movie is a true piece of cinematic art. Great review sir!

  • @BMOVIEMIKE Thanks Mike! It really is a masterpiece for a number of reasons, and it just looks so awesome on blu-ray. I've always liked Blade Runner, but seeing it for the first time on blu-ray was an eye-opener.

  • Funny I was just about to send you a message asking what your next vid would be. Fantastic review. I love Blade Runner, and I agree that while the Final cut is better, that it is essential that the original stays in circulation, unlike Star Wars.

  • @HorrorOfMike I agree. The five-disc blu-ray of Blade Runner is probably my favorite set in my collection. I used to LOVE Star Wars, but all the tinkering around has really turned me off to that franchise. I haven't even picked up the Complete Saga on blu-ray yet, because I just don't have the urge to get it. Maybe I'll get it someday, but I definitely would've purchased it if it had the original AND alternative versions, like they did with the Alien box set. Friggin' George Lucas man...

  • i bought my first ps3 just to see blade runner i heard it would be coming in blu ray in four different versions. the ps3 was the cheapest player at the time. great review to a great movie.

  • @vidcker Thanks! I got a ps3 also, which is perfect for gamer/film buffs like myself, lol. The Blade Runner set is probably my favorite in my blu-ray collection. I thought the workprint was pretty cool.

  • Great review, brb.

I also have been watching this one for the last 30 years. But I still like the voiceover version. However, I am a fan of '40s and '50s film noir as well, so that may have something to do with it. I'm not sure which version I like the best. I just like them all. I'll have to take a look at the final cut again tomorrow.

George Lucas as Eldon Tyrell! I love it! :D

    Thanks for sharing.

  • @PhiloYT1 Glad you liked the review! Like I said, I used to like the old voiceover version better than the director's cut. But when the Final Cut came out, I was like "wow." It just looks so good now, that it made the voiceover seem more unnecessary than ever. But I'm glad I have both versions, because they're both interesting to watch from a film history perspective.

  • Absolutely brilliant and very in-depth review you gave here.

Blade Runner is one of the most unique & original Sci-Fi movie ever made, and I never get bored with it.

If you haven't done 2001: A Space Odyssey, please do so for the next Video Discussion. That movie is a work of art.

  • @dvdreview1 I wouldn't mind doing a review on 2001. I saw it again recently on blu-ray, and it truly is an amazing film. I made a few mental notes in my mind, just in case I do a review in the near future. But I have some other films on deck to review. Maybe I'll get to 2001 some day.

  • the most, but like you said, it is a true masterpiece.

  • Awesome review. Blade Runner is one of my top five Science Fiction films, along with Spielberg's Minority Report, Total Recall (inspired by a short story from Philip K. Dick, who also wrote a short story that became the basis of Blade Runner), Soylent Green and The Matrix. I haven't seen the workprint of this film, but I do have the four versions of it, including the theatrical cut, the international cut, the director's cut and the final cut on DVD. Can't really decide which version I prefer th

  • what Scott has done with Blade Runner shows how much he loves his work! he didn't f*d up things like Lucas! I loved Blade Runner since i ever had seen a piece of it, when i was way to young!

I agree with his final cut, it gives a brillant classic what it deserves!

Lucas should see his error and do it like Scott and Spielberg (as he wants to release E.T. without the cgi on blu)!

    Great review man!

  • @StathisQauid I know! It's so annoying that George Lucas won't do that. Maybe he'll listen to Steven Spielberg and release the original versions. It's not like people won't buy them, so why not release them? I've kinda given up hope that Lucas will do that, so it is what it is, I guess. It just makes me respect Ridley Scott even more by comparison.

  • @thebrb30000 other than George he has respect about his movies and the fans! maybe Steven can fix George!;)

  • now i gotta go through the entire box set of alternate cuts I have..... there goes sunday.

fantastic work as ever Barry, good to see another wonderful piece of work by you again

  • @lampyman101 Thanks Glenn! Yeah, I spent a good month obsessing over the different versions of Blade Runner, as well as that awesome documentary on the blu-ray set. I do that with certain films from time to time, and Blade Runner is one of those films. Anyhow, I've been meaning to get this video review out sooner, but I was frustrated with some editing difficulties, so I kept putting it off.

  • i do love this movie but the only problem i have with it, is all the different versions that they have released over the years that has altered the way you see Decker, i have all the versions available and i have to go with the last final cut as well. The effects are timeless and still stand the test of time against any cgi made today!

  • Comment removed

  • I forgot how good this film looks. Excellent review.

  • @kentuckycunctator Thanks! Yeah, this film looks amazing on blu-ray, specifically the Final Cut.

  • dude your videos are always thought-provoking and thats why i love them. i dont like the movie blade runner but i enjoyed this video. great job.

  • @movrinoscopy Actually, I know a lot of people who don't really like Blade Runner. I saw it in college at a screening for a media studies class, and everyone in the class HATED it. They were like, "What the fuck was THAT all about? I don't get it." But for me, I grew up watching this film. I saw it when I was five, and the scene where Rutger Hauer pops the guys eyeballs out, that traumatized me for sure! I remember that experience very vividly.
