lauren is an amazing dancer. she dances so fearlessly and truly from the heart. it takes damn technique to able to dance so free like that. all you dissing her technique GO TO HELL!!
Wow.. this is a dance workshop for goodness sake. Lauren had a story behind this dance, and she was dancing it for herself during this point in time. When it comes to dancing for yourself, technique never comes first. It shouldn't even come second. In fact, technique shouldn't mean a thing when you're pouring your heart into something you love to do. When it comes to auditions and being on tv and what not, of course technique will matter somehow. But when you're dancing for yourself it shouldn't
I don't know why you guys are criticizing Lauren's dancing here. She is a GOOD dancer, probably much better than you will ever be. Is she perfect? No. If you want perfect TECHNIQUE, go pay some big bucks to see a performance by a BALLET company! Lauren lives in LA, audtions for COMMERCIAL movies and music videos, so she trains/dances a lot of hip hop + jazz funk. She is NOT solely a "lyrical" dancer. There are DIFFERENT GOALS for professional dancers in the industry! Sheesh.
Oh you're right. Everything in dance should be sharp, perfect fouette combinations.
You can tell that they have technique training, but how much would it have broken the mood if they did a two-step pirouette preparation and whipped out a perfect quad?
It's not that kind of dance.
I'm really not trying to be hateful, but your comments sound so dense. Get out in the world of dance and educate yourselves a little more :)
I'm not trying to be hateful either, but either you don't know dance or you're delusional. What do you mean "not that kind of dance"? Not lyrical? Because i've seen lyrical dancers with perfect technique who still maintain the mood. That's no excuse. So you're telling me that every dance Lauren has done has uncontrolled turns, no 180s, no center, flexed feet only because of the mood? Those are amateur mistakes. Any homeless person can flail around and call it dancing. The technique is most imp.
Look up the lyrics to this song. It's called Sorry by Maria Mena.
This guy is the center of her universe and he not only doesn't care, but is so straight forward that he can tell her that he doesn't love her. And yet, she keeps coming back for more, even though she's acknowledging that it's tearing her apart. She is NOT in control of her emotions, let alone her life.
I don't know if you've ever been in a comparable situation, but I'd imagine that your center is the least of your worries...
Furthermore, have you EVER seen a perfect turn/leap in a Mia Michaels piece? Not so much. And if you have the audacity to say that she's an amateur, delusional might as well be your middle name.
Your comments sound a lot like the attitude that classically trained ballerinas had when Martha Graham basically pioneered Modern Dance. They were appalled by flexed feet and varying postures, but look at what it's done to us as dancers now? Not every dance is put together for a UDA Competition.

I have seen perfect technique in Mia Michael's pieces and one for sure was allison and ryan's contemporary. For a lot of Mia's pieces she's had to work with others who have no lyrical training so they can't bring that level of technique to the piece. Remember danny's amazing pirouettes while Lauren just stood there?
I know what the song is about but that still doesn't excuse flexed feet and bad centers! She shouldn't have to worry about it, it should be natural if she was a pro.
There are so many dancers that use the same type of emotional song but have perfect technique. Regardless of the song ALL of Lauren's turns have been out of control, she loses her center and she falls.
I don't think I've called her an amateur dancer. She's an amateur contemporary dancer but I think she's more pro hip hop. Everything I've heard about her is all hip hop gigs mostly. I'm sorry but posture and control are VERY important. My teachers were very strict about that.
Having danced with Ashley, I can assure you that it's not mistakes that she's making. It's part of the dance. I'm not defending Lauren's technique since I haven't seen a lot of her videos.
I agree that those items are very important as well, but I also enjoy variety. I'm VERY strongly against turning contemporary into a trick show with half-hearted choreo as filler. Not to say it's impossible to use technique without killing the mood, but more often than not it looks extremely out of place.

I was talking about Lauren, not Ashley. She's not very good in this, sorry, but I don't want to judge her on one piece since it was taught by Lauren. But i've seen Lauren's god awful technique in other dances and I can assure you it's painful.
Contemporary doesn't have to be a trick show for it to have technique. Look up Jaimie Goodwin's dances. She keeps the mood AND has beautiful lines and beautiful technique.
Her dancing has a delicious texture.

question is this considered lyrical or modern? i have a hard time distinguishing them
bwaystar123 2 years ago
looks like contemporary to me - just the technique in the feet seems more contemp. than anything else
but its probably some kind of fusion (its hard to be really strict to a style with that kind of movement, you know?
madelineb505 2 years ago
* and by fusion i mean fusion between modern and contemporary - not lyrical
