  • what's song is 0:00 to 0:14 ??

  • Comment removed

  • @ss2lakhan that's numbnuts and the pumpguns

  • I am old skool, But Rakim is spittin some straight up pimp shit and ryming to time. This boy was on fire way ahead of time. This was the best sample of Al Green by a Genius named RAKIM.

  • What sample is there at the very beginning? the first 15 seconds

  • why can't any of the new shit out there be as dope as this. this is one of the sickest beats out there. NICE!!!!!!

  • So Classic...is sick

  • Yeah, Al Green sample: I was listening to Rakim only today, and then after that I stuck Al Green on the turntables, just for the heck of it. Third song in, Al Green's sample, came on. I know Eric B. got most of his old-skool gems from his parents soul collection; meanwhile Rakim was playing the saxaphone and playing the drums. Rakim still rips shows like it's 1986; his skills just surgically sharp - awe-inspiring, actually! Rakim=God MC!

  • The drum line is an Al Green sample I think, MAssive attack also sampled it, great rhythm line.

  • ...Back to the scene of the crime on time

as they introduced the fiend of a rhyme...

In my opinion, this has always been one of the greatest "love" raps of all time! Eric B and Rakim kept it in the streets with no regards for commercialism.

    Fresh beat? Check.

    Dope rhymes? Check.

    Def delivery? Check.

    Sick flow? Check.

    Classic? Check.

  • Why on earth is that terrible music leading into this track? Terrible. Just let the song play.

  • @MusashiFilms thats pete rock's beat buddy, watch what you say about it

  • @supersteeez I'd just prefer the song Mahogany. No lead-in necessary, even if it is Pete Rock. Eric B.'ll hold it down.

  • Found this on my old itunes library<3 I fell in love all over again

  • The two people who don't like this song needs th let the rhythm hit 'em. Or maybe get in a New York state of mind. What!?

  • beginning song please?

  • @AmatZelo Pete Rock - "Hop, Skip & Jump"

  • This track broke my HipHop virginity.

I used to tape [that's right I said tape record] the Rap Down show that aired over the weekend and memorize the dopest tracks.

This and two Mc Light tracks where the 1st rhymes I knew cold.

  • The song in the beginning is Hop, Skip & Jump by J DIlla

  • @zbhelm Pete Rock

  • rakim is still the best

  • This song is so DOPE I can't stand it. How can anybody call the crap out today hip hop or even think it is in the same category as these joints!?

  • Classic Eric B & Rakim :)

One of the Finest Hiphop Love Tracks ...

i get Chills when Rakim says "My Name is Ra & This is Eric B ..."

Eric B was one of the Greatest Producers of all Time ,with his Revolutionary Sampling & Scratching Skills...

( I Dunno why these "Greatest of all Time" List Makers are ignoring Him )

Rakim ,the Greatest Lyricist of all time , Innovator of Multiple & Internal Rhymes :)

Every MC today owes something to Rakim ....

  • What song if that from 0:00 to 0:14

  • @leondre55 Pete Rock - Hop Skip & Jump

  • @leondre55 dont knowbut it was BullllllllllllllllllllllllllShhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttttttttt

  • song is sooo chills

  • I love this song because he didn't disrespect just to get some ass to me he came correctly smooth saying thing that she want to hear

  • love the al green sample

  • I love the thick hi hat that pops up whenever the orchestral sample starts

  • @nptrock rakim is great but not cursing doesn't make u better than someone not cursing

  • I wish todays artist would "listen to old school Rap, learn from their roots, & bring Hip Hop into the studio" like yesterdays artist (such as Rakim). Todays Rap has "NO ESSENCE". I miss Hip Hop.

  • @DreMurf313 ...me too, see...back in the day if you said you could rap, cats would step to you and battle you, its a completely different culture now...straight bullshit.

  • I Fucking Love This Song!

  • This shit is fuckin' timeless.

  • Got dam did he just rip this song to pieces, best rapper hands down!!

  • rakim rip the hell out of this song. this song took rap to a whole new level when it drop back in the day. listen to that dude flwo man? WTF! yall young niggas better listen real close to how RAP IS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE.

  • Lyracism and wordplay at it''s best.

  • She asked "how come I don't smile?" ....I said "everything's fine---but I'm in a New York State of Mind!!! CLASSIC !!!!!!

  • "She kissed me slow but you know how far a kiss can go" "Fuck around and miss the show" Brilliant

  • He was talking about smoking crack...smh, great song though

  • ahh the bass

  • I'm in a New York State of Mind

  • Anyone who knows Hip Hop history knows this songs place in Hip Hop history..It was Rakims first forray into females..All his songs before this were mainly gangsta or 5% knoweledge...It was truly groundbreaking that the "GOD" was actually talking about sex and women....Oh and the sample is Al Green's Im Glad Your Mine.... not really jazz but southern soul.

  • @jackthesmuggler Gangster? wat the fuck u sayin???...Rakim aint never done no gangster shit!!...Oh and by the way, hes one of the only mc's ive ever known not to curse or call a lady a bitch/ho etc...Rakim is da greatest along wit BDK!

  • @nptrock u musta 4got - "i used to roll up , this is a hold , aint nuthni funny - stop smilin and then dont nothin move but the money " - this want a scene from a monolopy game- that's Co Wild Long Island

  • @diodoro73 stole the line from my mind was just bout to right that lol

  • @jackthesmuggler In one of his very first records.. Eric B for Pres..." go get a girl and get soft and warm.. don't get excited youve been invited to a quiet storm".... or the song WHATS ON YOUR MIND.. Rakim although tough with the flow and lyrics was always very gentlemen like when it came to rapping about women unlike todays rappers.

  • @jackthesmuggler Your talking complete bullshit.... "All his songs before were mainly gangsta " - NO they weren't Rakim was never a gangsta rapper when he was with Eric B- he was anything but a gangsta rapper. He mainly rapped about rapping. Do your research

  • @jackthesmuggler Mmmm, I aint no joke is the perfect everything. Perfect lyrics. Perfect beat. Best scratches for the time. Couldn't get that outta the walkman for 2 months!!!

  • @jackthesmuggler You know man .... thats my generation( Eric B and Rakim) but I always wonder what sample this was. I knew it came from a song that I had heard but I never heard that Al Green piece again.. homage to Eric B, for switchin the orignal up drastic because, Todays era say just play the ( some of the era) music. Thats kind of disrespectful in my peep.... but ....

  • @jackthesmuggler Gangsta..?? :/ Since when has Rakim been Gansta? Just the dopest skills.

  • @jackthesmuggler More like 95% knowledge and 5% gangsta
