  • What year is this?

  • vraiment costaud !!!

  • VERSION TRES INTERESSANTE !!!!

  • I love bitch fights back stage - do you know the story about Obratszova and Vishnevskaya in the green room at Carnegie ? Galina slapped Elena hard across the face. She did. I was there.

  • Never heard of her, and glad to meet her. Thanks for posting. Very nice voice!!!

  • Apriile is melting voice and art, her soul vibrate the stage!

    So amazing!

  • Tebaldi was once her teacher - Aprile just love Tebaldi.

  • I wonder why she did make more recordings, now it is a bit too late.

  • @tebaldicallas no it's not.... I assure you.

  • @tebaldicallas Callas and Tebaldi also Sutherland made recordings early - it is too bad

that recording companies don't ask her. When they are retired, i least they have recordings for

peoples to remember her. Tebaldi said when she was in London in 1992 they were lining up

to see her and those peoples were not even alive when she was singing.

  • The most beautiful Soprano ever live and hearing her in the house as I did is a never to forget experience. Wonderful voice and Lady.

  • Stunning performance! TY.

  • Fan.

  • BRAVA!

  • I love love love this lady!!! She is truly a dynamo! MY MY MYYYYYYYY

  • BRAVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Aprile Millo is, in my humble judgement, the Queen of Italian Opera. Everything that I hear her singing is the best. Amazing voice and perfect technical skills. She sings with her SOUL!

  • She has all the bravura of the old school sopranos: Tebaldi, Scotto, Ponselle; she is by far one of the great interpreters of the Italian verismo roles! Go GIRL!!!!!

  • She is fabulous! So emotional and textured, and the voice is gorgeous.

  • Let me know if it took place aat Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro. If so, I, fortunally, was there. Please, if possible, post the "bis", Canzone D`Amore !!!!!

  • This was a concert in San Francisco.

  • This video is from her recital at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro where she achived a great success.

To my judgement she is the best soprano that I have seen in opera. I have atteded to all her performances in Rio (Aida, Andrea Chenier, Gala with Placido Domingo and this recital) and she is the most beloved singer here since her stunning historical debut in the new production of Aida.

  • Millo is one of the best and passionate singers in the world. Her voice is a gift and , even sometimes acs "macarronic" she is someone unforgetable. Love her as I love Baltsa. DIVE!

  • amazing

  • The critic of the newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo" wrote that her performance as Maddalena with Opera Brasil was one of the 3 best performance of all the artists that have appeared in 80 years at the Theatro Municipal, who has applauded legendary artists such as Callas, Tebaldi, Muzio, Sayão, Caballe, Caruso, Gigli, Rubinstein, Pavlova, Nijinsky, Casals, etc,etc...

Aprile Millo is the most beloved singer that visit Brazil in the last 25 years.

She takes me to another dimension of Life...

  • I can't believe I'm just now redicovering Aprille Milo after last hearing her 17 years ago. I can't get over just how good she really was and is!

  • What a great pianist!!!

  • questa si ke è una signora maddalena!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRANDE!

  • im singing this in concert!!!

  • Only two artists can give justice to this song in MY opinion. Maria Callas and Aprile Millo.

  • And Tebaldi. And Scotto.

  • Rory1956,

Tebaldi, yes. Scotto, absolutely no way.

  • Jesus !!!

  • so much Tebaldi in her voice

  • "Cossì fui solla"

    ehehe

  • I'm so moved by this performance. Aprile you are a GODDESS !

  • I met her backstage after her Carnegie debut with Bergonzi in Lombardi and told her that she was the 'real deal.' She still is.

Get rid of the ham-fisted pianist.

  • @johngotwalt ham -fisted, LMAO!!!!!!!!!

  • I love you Aprile, one and only

  • Thanks for posting it, great pleasure to listen the wonderful Millo!

I didn't noticed the loudness of the piano...I was enjoying this divine singing...

  • A very speacial artist... great post. Kindest regards.

  • He is way too loud.

  • However, in this case it might not matter as much -- since Millo has an exceptionally big voice.

  • He is very exciting but a little too loud for my taste.

  • He is the infamous Kohn who was thrown out of the met after the fiasco of Contrubas and her not wanting an amateur conductor, Kohn, to conduct her. He called her a bitch and the Met fired him. Millo adores him, took him all over the world, why I will never know. better at the piano.

  • The greatest, what can you say about a voice like this? nobody who can surpass her as a spinto soprano, hearing her in the house is an experience I will take to my grave and I heard them all from 1957 on too this day and her spinto was best, Piano, Forte-- it is just a wonderful rich Italian sound from the golden age, thank you for this post.

  • she's kind of great, i also recomend to listen the same song performed by maria callas (la davina) more than perfect

  • I prefer Millo, thanks the same. Callas is bel canto. NOt verismo. This and tebaldi is the best.

  • Brava!¿Habrà alguna ahora que cante con esa fuerza esa convicciòn de lo que es dramàtico????

  • I have done a complete 180 on this woman. I read too many critics. She is AMAZING!

  • In the last decades there has come nobody along with such vocal glory.

What on earth happened to her? I did hear her last year and much of this was left but where had she been and why did she stop.

  • Wasn't that in Rio de Janeiro Theatro Municipal?

  • Yes, this wonderful performance was at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, in 1988.

One year later, she sung "Maddalena" in the concert version of Opera Brasil, both in the Theatro Municipal de Rio and also de São Paulo, with incredible success and raving reviews. One critic even wrote that she gifted the audience with one of the 3 best performance in the 80 years history of the Theatro!!!

  • The pianist is awesome. Love him!

  • Maestro Eugene Kohn is my favorite opera conductor. He is "singer´s conductor" that is also loved by the orchestra musicians in Brazil. He was the Music Director of the historic performance of Andrea Chenier by Opera Brasil with Aprile Millo, in 1989.

  • At 3:03 she did a little word's mistake....anyway she's divine!!!

  • Bravo!!!

Aprile una gran intérprete y Eugene un excelente pianista. Muy bueno.

  • NOT ONLY IS SHE GREAT HERE BUT SO IS THE SOUND. MAESTRO KOHN ALSO WORKED WITH NEIL SHICOFF, HE SPOKE HIGHLY OF HIM. I PREFER HER TO ANYBODY HERE and in the opera complete she is just awesome

  • I understand Tebaldi had coached Millo for a while. It makes you think...doesn't it?

  • Think only that Millo continues the great traditions.

  • We miss you! return quickly! Sublimate!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Millo is in a league of her own. No one comes close today to what she has.

  • Nobody can top Aprile Millo in interpreting Madalena di Cogny in Andrea Chenier in our times, period !

And I do not know a better pianist accompanist in the opera world than Eugene Kohn, who also I rate as one of best opera conductors of all times - he is always tuned with the singers, he makes the piano or the orchestra breath with them,

    Bravissimi !!!!!!!!!!

  • POWERFUL!!!! What a great voice!!! magnificent!!!! The pianist is terrific too!

  • almost as beautiful as Bruna Rasa & Muzio

  • exactly, and following the great traditions of these two great exponents. Millo is their successor. To me it is just as beautiful as the Muzio, and Muzio is a God to me, tons more beautiful than the Bruna Raza and the best thing? It sounds like Millo. Divina

  • Aprille you are magnificent I love you!!!! and your singing!!!!!

  • Love the gliss at 4:49 and 4:54. So musical!

  • Only the piano and her voice: a true artist!

I enjoy it even if it's not my favorite execution (i like more Tebaldi or Callas).

  • PErfectooo! Maravillosoooo!! Bravissimo a la soprano y al pianista!! I loveee...

  • Absolutely perfect. She lives every moment of the aria.

  • She is unequalled in this part

  • I adore her voice; she is special and brilliant in this aria

  • absolutly WONDERFUL ... Who is that GREAT pianist ???

GREAT ... GREAT.... GREAT ... BRAVA MADAMA ....

  • The pianist is Maestro Eugene Kohn who was also the painist for Callas on her Juilliard masterclasses when he was very young. Maestro Kohn is an excellent pianist, couch and conductor!

  • Not bad but a little too loud and creative with the score. he doesn't play what is written.

  • GReat. What understanding of the Italian style.!!!!!

  • i love this brillant voice ... brava lady you are a wonderful!

  • Milo shines in this aria... the octave higher ending is astounding... i however do NOT like the pianists improvisations with the arias accompainment. they take away from the aria itself... beautiful nonetheless

  • I agree with you in regards of the pianist accompaniment. It would have sounded more haughting with one violin or cello. But very good anyway.

  • ¡ Maravillosa !

La escuché en esa misma aria en Chile y el Teatro se vino abajo.

  • Puf... I love her voice!! Bravissimo!!

  • GREAT!!! I'm absolutely agree with baritenor81

  • An excellent interpretation. With her very Italiate timbro, Millo was born to sing this kind of repertoire. Some may find it too slow because the most famous version of this aria is probably Callas', who sings it faster than almost everyone else. The only thing I dislike in Millo's rendition is that awful ending one octave higher.

  • bravissima

  • I agree completly with Betcha22. It's not too slow. Quite to the contrary; it could have been even slower at certain places. She gives such an incredible intensity to the piece. That's why it works. Of course, she has a great pianist behind her too.

  • She's wonderful.

  • It is not too slow. This is the tradition of parlato, and it is written to tell a story. Tebaldi, and MIlanov sing it at this speed, it is metronome marking 54. That is slow. Brava Millo

  • beautiful voice, as usual. Too slow, rather boring

  • Beautiful interpretation...

  • I love the Callas interpretation. This is one really good. When has it been taped?

  • What's all the crap about weight.Voice first.

  • Brilliant. With such insightful performing you can understand what the composer wanted. Totally wonderful. Great artist.

  • watch the painist watch her...he watches her every move and is with here every step of the way. and she is amazing by the way...she rivals callas on this aria. (yes i said it!) this is a hard aria to pull off with just piano and excerpted from the opera. she is very very very good!! gave me goose bumps

  • definitely better than callas. callas is too lyric in this aria, whereas millo remains spinto from the bottom to to the (very perfectly intonated) high h...

  • This is phenomenal!!!

  • a great artist. how come i haven't heard of her before...

  • Check out Aida DVD from 1989 with her. Phenomenal.

  • Brava! Aprile!

  • The accompanist is Eugene Kohn, for some years an assistant conductor at the Met and coach who is best known as the accompanist for the Callas master classes at Julliard (not the Macnally play but the original event with Mme. Callas herself) Don't know where he is now.

    Great Millo, by the way!

  • I've seen that guy as a director in many Placido's concerts, but I can't remember his name,I don't think he's that good anyway.

  • Kohn is a great accompanist and a great conductor. Better than Herr Muti.

  • Does anyone know the name of the pianist? He does an excellent job along Millo!

  • For heaven's sake, who the hell cares how much she weighs?!?! Not me.

  • I completely agree with you,Idialegre. When will opera directors learn that people are capable of suspending their disbelief where opera plots are concerned and are going to listen to the wonderful soaring voices such as Millo. She is not even that overweight by some operatic standards. Thanks for the clip, jmahlon. Where was it filmed?

  • Aprile is one of the greatest voice I have ever heard. And she is a delightful person. I had the pleasure to work with her doing my first Sacristan in Tosca and she was a jewel! Awesome voice and a great artist. Brava Millo!!!

  • sorry for the double post.

  • my friend introduced me to opera with this voice and I am hooked. What a goregous color, and real emotion. Hope to catch her perfromances this season at the Met.Like listening to a grammaphone. love it.

  • My friend introduced me to opera with this voice and I am hopelessly hooked. What a great color. How beautiful the sense of pain and emotion. I hope to catch her live this season at the Met. Like listening to a grammaphone. love this.

  • I cried with this perform...thank for sharing it...

  • weight is keeping her off the stage.she never played at being the grand diva, that spin was spewed by some publicist for her rivals. I was with the Comunale for press and she was so kind and gracious, the orchestra applauded the night of her first performance. There is a certain gravitas to this music and she knows this and so did the old guard who embraced her from day one as one of their own. Once the weight comes off, we'll see how much the houses avoid her.

  • She started out back in the 80's singing really nicely, but never really developed artistically. I will say that she was one of the few singers who actually had an "idea" of what an italianate voice should sound like, but her preoccupation with acting out the grand diva persona on stage and off backfired, and she's now pretty much avoided by the major houses. She sang one of the most magnificent Liu's I've ever heard back then.

  • I do not think she is underated at all, at 48 she is twenty years into a fabulous career. If she would stop pulling the Garbo and actually show up, and lose some of the weight, we would hear her more. Inspires a lot of controversy but the talent and the "goods" are still there.

  • She's not 48, she just gives that age. Closer to 52 actually :)

  • when I handled her press for the comunale dear Zerlina freshly signed up to you tube, she lost her passport and submitted a copy of her birth certificate-sorry for you seemingly, she is 48 in april of this year. If you must have her older to right some personal wrong in your own life, be my guest.

  • i just love millo, one of the great voices.....don't understand why she is so underrated... i close my eyes and i can hear tebaldi....lovely lady, such and artist

  • BRAVA! If I love anything it's that aria done well. It was nice and pure throughout the entire voice. This is actually the aria that made me want to become an opera singer when I heard Callas do it in the film "Philidelphia". There aren't a lot of times where I can sit back and enjoy this aria in recital form because the piano tends to get a little too choppy for my taste, but I did enjoy this. Thank you for the clip!
