Sometimes a problem (even a stupid one) NEEDS to be put to rest. Otherwise this would stick in your mind, nagging you forever. So you did a good thing for yourself. "Political Compass" puts Nazis center right because their policies werent strictly right. Which is why I see the historical categories of left/right almost useless.

You are right about more dimensions. Although when you add more dimensions the position is on a 'compass' and no longer just left/right, adding more complexity than the general use of the terms. For example, Nazis believed in eugenics; historically a leftist social ideal. Therefore in some ways they were socially right in others socially left.
Government control seems to capture elements of economic and social left/right but the dimensions are so convoluted in history it is hard to separate.

It depends on how you are describing left and right... historically left and right are different than philosophical left and right.
Philosophical left/right are described by government control. farthest left is most government control ... farthest right is no government. Under this definition... all totalitarian and authoritarian movements are left. historical categories of left/right dont mean much because libertarians would be considered left, but everyone calls them right wing.
